The Baby Boks begin their defence of the U19 World Championships later today against host nation France.
Coach Eugene Eloff does not believe that his side’s status as champions makes them the favourites heading into the tournament opener, however.
“It’s difficult in games of this nature to predict who are the favourites,” Eloff said in Die Burger. “There’s not a lot to help you to determine the strengths of each side. New players are introduced into the game every year and it doesn’t make sense to say the Baby Boks are favourites because they won last year’s tournament.”
Whilst names do not jump out of Eloff’s squad, look out for Christopher Juries, younger brother of Sevens legend Fabian. Left wing Hercules Venter dominated the schools scene for Monument, and captain PJ Vermeulen was part of the side that won the event last year.
The U19s take on France at 16:00 South African time today. The game is broadcast on CSN and SS1.
