Nick Mallett departs to join the Stormers in Auckland later today, but strictly as an “observer.”
The WP director of rugby has constantly emphasised his refusal to take over direct coaching of the side, and will join the side for matches against the Blues and Chiefs but not in an official capacity.
“I am not going to coach the team, I’ve constantly reiterated that,” Mallett told keo.co.za. “I am not coaching the team because that is now what a director of rugby does, and is not part of my job description. Secondly I do not want to coach the team.”
Mallett has identified key moments in the past six weeks to get involved, notably at half time against the Cheetahs when a trademark rocket was delivered to the noticably flat and disinterested side.
They are actions he does not seek to repeat, however.
“Kobus [van der Merwe] is the head coach. He along with his coaching staff is responsible for results, and I have every confidence they will turn the season around. I want him to imprint his personality on the team, and believe that is vital if the goals we have set are to be achieved. The only way that will happen is if my role in the direct running of the side is very limited.”
