Sanzar has given Springbok flyhalf Jaco van der Westhuyzen the thumbs up to play for the Bulls in the remainder of the Vodacom Super 14.
Van der Westhuyzen told keo.co.za that he would be part of the Blue Bulls Vodacom Cup team that travels to George to play the SWD Eagles on Saturday. “I’ll be in the match 22 for the Eagles game and hopefully I’ll get about 40 minutes of game time. Sanzar has cleared me to play so I’m just looking to get on the park now,” he confirmed.
Van der Westhuyzen has been training with the Vodacom side, but it is likely he will be summoned by Heyneke Meyer to join the Bulls Super 14 squad that is currently touring Australasia some time in the next week.
Both flyhalf Derick Hougaard and fullback Johan Roets are nursing injuries and van der Westhuyzen would be more than reliable back up to both players.
“I have been cleared by NEC (his old club) and the Japanese Rugby Union and it’s basically concluded that I’m a Bulls player now,” said a clearly excited van der Westhuyzen. “It’s just a case of getting the letters in writing on Wednesday. They have been very co-operative.”
The former Sharks and Leicester Tigers player is still a major part of Bok coach Jake White’s plans and his value is underlined by his ability to cover both flyhalf and fullback with equal proficiency. However, his lack of game time will be a concern and White will monitor the players’ progress with an eagle eye.
