Stormers coach Kobus van der Merwe has slammed captain De Wet Barry for getting sin-binned against the Blues in Auckland.
With Hanyani Shimange having just been yellow-carded for killing the ball at a ruck, the Stormers were reduced to 13 men after Barry’s brainless shoulder charge.
“It’s totally unacceptable coming from two senior Springboks,” said Van der Merwe. “You won’t win any game by giving away 11 penalties in the first half and then getting two yellow cards in the second. It is extremely disappointing and totally unacceptable.
“We made mistakes, got frustrated and just lost our discipline. It was 13-6 when we got the yellow cards and the guys did brilliantly when we were down to 13 men. We eventually got back to 20-15 down, but two crucial mistakes in the last 10 minutes cost us dearly.”
The Stormers now face the Chiefs at Mount Maunganui, who are coming off the back of a 26-all draw with the Bulls.
“They were a bit fortunate to come back like that against the Bulls, but they are clearly a side that doesn’t lie down,” said Van der Merwe. “Like any other New Zealand team they will punish you if you kick aimlessly and give possession away. The one thing that may be in our favour is that the match is not being played at their headquarters.”
