Willemse ready for action

Springbok wing Ashwin Willemse is ready for action and is likely to be one of several changes to the Calamity Cats team for the must-win clash with the Sharks at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Willemse played well in the Lions jersey in a Vodacom Cup match against Boland in Wellington on Saturday and showed that he had recovered from his hamstring injury. He could replace Wylie Human as right wing against the Sharks, Beeld reported on Monday.

Left wing Grant Esterhuizen, who is a specialist outside centre (he played his 50th Super match against the Reds) could retain the No 11 jersey because of a shortage of speedsters.

Andre Pretorius’ performance was one of the few highlights in the Cats’ pathetic display against the Reds. It was also his Super 14 debut after he underwent an ankle operation in November.

Even though he is not yet fully match-fit, he had a good game. His tactical kicking was on the button and he was also successful with three of his five attempts at goal – one of them a 56m monster kick.

His customary drop-kick was unsuccessful because a Reds player got a hand in the way.
