Kiwis kicking themselves

Hurricanes flyhalf David Holwell was at a loss to explain the poor goal kicking that saw four players land just three out of 13 attempts at Carisbrook on Sunday.

The replacement No 10, who kicked two from five after Jimmy Goperth botched all seven of his attempts, admitted that missing 18 points could prove costly as the Super 14 semi-finals near.

“It was just one of those days,” he said. “There was a little bit of wind but it wasn’t that bad. There was really no excuse. There will be some close games that will come down to goal kicking so we have a bit of work to do.”

The ‘Canes finally landed a kick when winger Lome Fa’atau scored his side’s fourth try, placing the ball between the posts much to the relief of Holwell.

“I have to be honest and say I was pleased with that – I back myself from there,” Holwell laughed.
