Fiji fever hits Cape Town

Fiji fever hits Cape Town

Western Province Director of Rugby Nick Mallett is in Fiji on a shopping expedition, confident of luring talented Fijian players to Cape Town.

Mallett confirmed to the Fiji Times that the province was looking at six players, between the age of 17 and 20, to relocate to the Western Province Academy and hopefully to play for Western Province, the Stormers and Springboks.

The Fijian factor is something Mallett has focused on for the past year and he also believes that if Auckland and the like can lure Fijian, Tongan and Samoan players then why can’t Cape Town?

It is an action that will no doubt be seen negatively by some, but it is one that should be applauded. It is long overdue and finally someone has done more than talk about it.

Australia and New Zealand have for years tapped into the Island resources, why not South Africa?

Mallett returns to South Africa at the weekend and he expressed confidence that there was enough talent to identify six promising players, who in three to five years could be playing for the Boks.

Always wondered what happened to Christian Cullen, one of the best fullbacks ever, very shortlived career. amazingly balanced runner and tremendously powerful for his size.

yeah old John Hart seemed like a bit of a thinker, but did some pretty silly things too.

    Wpw,

You uppity coloureds really have an identity crisis. Give you a professional job and a house in tree lined suburbia and now you think you white enough to be accepted as an official Blue Bulls supporter. But then again you could play the role of Darkie Smurf.

So, like I said, Basil Bey is ALL about Bishops! He was not even for a single second never about Wynberg!

But Polden, Kriel and Pretorius (and fellow WBHS legends like Tasker) ARE woven into the fabulous history of Wynberg rugby.

And maybe you just flopped out? Couldn’t cut it?

    Does anyone really care?

    Has anyone even noticed?

Can you feel the love by your newfound compatriots ? They sure seem to embrace you.

    NZMaori:

Tackler was a test tube experiment that went horribly wrong. Hence, he is now bantering moron, primitive and chromosome deficient. When you find him, please stomp on him. A good place to start your search is the local trailer park.

Fantastic! The Afrikaners can naai the Islanders and create a new coloured breed capable of playing devastating rugby. It’s the only way for the Dutchmen to stay in the game. The Fijians will be the saviours of the Afrikaans rugby players in SA.

  • 212.cane: Reply to this comment

Tackler does not live in NZ.
He is a paid empolyee of the site Keo.co
He is probably a reporter by profession.
His brief is to stir things up and generate posts on the site—the more posts the better for advertisers etc.
He has Travelled extensively in NZ and knows the Country pretty well –as any rugby Journo following a SA team would.
If he still claims to be what he says he is then NZ Maori/Brads or myself can give he couple of quick fire questions to authentic himself.

maybe he should look at how he f uped province and then recruit someone to take his place.

differ with you slightly, yes Tackles gets his jollies from stirring things up, but he is firmly transplanted to NZ.

Anyway Ig can settle this quite easily by checking his IP address.

Province was going downhill long before Mallett arrived.

You plonkers are lucky to have Mallett there. Pity all your dumb ***** will end up chasing him away.

In this case, white is right. The whiteys playing at the Stormers a lazy and blacks aren’t greedy (just look at how those Rose brothers drowned in their greed). The Fijians will be hungry, desperate, commited and above all TALANTED>

At the moment Mallet probably believes that every South African is inferior when it comes to rugby. Black and white.

    NZMaori

Disagree on the Cullen issue. Sure Hart played him out of position in RWC99, but I don’t see how that shat on his career.

Smith reinstated him as the number one fullback, and it was babble talk Mitchell who sent him on the journey to nowhere.

Not that Cullen needed much direction to find no where. Rumour has it he was called Steiny. After Steinlager one of NZ’s beers.

He wasn’t called Steiny because he liked beer, rather it was the beer bottle containing the beer. Which was vacant fron the neck up.

  • 231.cane: Reply to this comment

    Jonwood,
If Ig is an employee of the site he would say that wouldn’t he.

I have meet many SA’s in Nz and they all still love there Bokkes.

  • 232.Richie_7: Reply to this comment

You guys are missing the plot. Even with Fiji’s flair, strength and speed, they’re still only rated down at number 10 or 11. Putting those players behind a Bulls pack is not going to neccesarily be a winning combination.

The reason South African teams are so poor is because they’re still playing neanderthal style rugby. You guys keep blame the coaches and administrators. Sure, the coach can have you run the same movement over and over in practice until you’re blue in the face and feel like vomitting, but in a game when the move doesn;t go to plan it’s up to the players to read the game, sum it up, and decide what next to do. SA players look like a deer in the headlights when they run out of options. They simply can’t think for themselves.

Watching the Easter School’s Festival you realise just how much talent there is. But players come out of school, are told to forget that which comes naturally to them, and adopt to a specific “South African” gameplan. And soon the player does exactly what he’s been told, but loses that ability to think!

If South Africa wants to dominate, it’s more a mindset change than a change of players and coaches.

    cane vs tackler

    let the challenge begin…

tacker, you have your google open?

  • 234.mc spyker: Reply to this comment

he still has a soft spot for his clown though. Nobody questioned fester on this site when he was appointed. but if you mention the name of a black coach you get a quick enough response.

    Question # 1

Name the City and Suburb in which you reside in NZ>

  • 236.wpw: Reply to this comment

  • 237.superbok: Reply to this comment

I agree with what he’s doing. In any case, the u/19 & u/21 world cups act as recruitment grounds for the Kiwis, Ozzies and the English. Besides, these Fijians (or other Islanders) don’t have to commit to eventually playing for the Springboks. If selected, they would rather play for Fiji.
As long as it is for Fiji and not the All Blacks.

  • 238.3rdday: Reply to this comment

At least Mallet won’t have a problem meeting the quota issues and fielding talented players at the same time when those big, bustling, thusting, speedy, skilled black buggers from the Islands arrive.

  • 239.cab: Reply to this comment

A bullshitter is easy to pick out, Ig doesn’t lie.

I’m willing to bet Tackler is in NZ, does not support NZ, but tells everyone how **** SA is, a certain kind of saffa expat.

  • 240.saffa_guy: Reply to this comment

    Richie_7,

Aaah, but is it not the role of the coaches to implement that mind set change within the players. Its the coaches who have to develop “thinking” players.

  • 241.Richie_7: Reply to this comment

    Saffa,

    No

  • 242.mc spyker: Reply to this comment

    richie 7,

until you get rid of the old school players like mallett, heynecke and ludricous you will have this in SA rugby. Their sell by dfate is long gone. They belong in the old school in the old SA. If you look at what Rassie and **** has achieved you can see where I am coming from

That was a very difficult question to ask of Tackler. Don’t think he can ever answer you. He will have to ask his neighbour in the trailer park (which is passed out) where exactly their location is.

Thats it i’m wiping my hands from you. If you want to remain an oppressed darkie then have your way. But don’t coming looking for sympathy after you’re told to wipe down all the seats at Loftus with a single wet wipe in order to become the first official Darkie Smurf.

Keo.co.za is the last respite for tackler where the odd dummy still listens to his crud, whereas in NZ he’d just be ripped to smithereens, banned and ignored.
