Fiji fever hits Cape Town

Fiji fever hits Cape Town

Western Province Director of Rugby Nick Mallett is in Fiji on a shopping expedition, confident of luring talented Fijian players to Cape Town.

Mallett confirmed to the Fiji Times that the province was looking at six players, between the age of 17 and 20, to relocate to the Western Province Academy and hopefully to play for Western Province, the Stormers and Springboks.

The Fijian factor is something Mallett has focused on for the past year and he also believes that if Auckland and the like can lure Fijian, Tongan and Samoan players then why can’t Cape Town?

It is an action that will no doubt be seen negatively by some, but it is one that should be applauded. It is long overdue and finally someone has done more than talk about it.

Australia and New Zealand have for years tapped into the Island resources, why not South Africa?

Mallett returns to South Africa at the weekend and he expressed confidence that there was enough talent to identify six promising players, who in three to five years could be playing for the Boks.

    NZMaori,
I agree. Things are happening so fast and the poor buggar has only got one pair of eyes. There’s also a lot of pressure to keep the game flowing. Funnily enough, the same guys who ***** about a whistle happy ref are usually the same ones who complain when he doesn’t blow.

nz – Steyn will be dealt to shortly?? Whats this all about? He ripped through your lot pretty easily, especially forcing them into silly mistakes! Hat off to Fleming, Oram, Bond & Vetori, but thats about it! But I agree Polly is over the hill, we just don’t have an adequate replacement unless the selectors finally see the real value of Hall or Morkel. BTW – Any of you know a similar blog for cricket chat?

Agree with you, John. The debate shouldn’t be whether it’s good for SA rugby. We should be asking what it will do to Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. And I think the answer is quite clear.

  • 405.NZMaori: Reply to this comment

    J.B Cower.

Post 11 is my answer to that although I do think NZ rugby dis service Polynesian rugby in this way:

NZ never play test matches over in the islands. because of $$ they play them over here and give the island nation some of the takings.

I think is would be alot harder if the ALL BLACKS were playing Fiji in Suva in 35 degrees infront of 25 000 screaming fijians.

Would be good for the game. Needs to hapen.

  • 406.cab: Reply to this comment

good points JB and katman, they should be a strength in their own right.

    NO way cab.

A strength in our own rite is a bad call. What exactly do you mean by that mate?

  • 409.katman: Reply to this comment

Or we should stop pretending that we’re concerned about their developing into strong test nations.

NZ Maori – Lets talk after the seris ok sweetness? We will beat you 3 nil and kill the black caps in the one dayers, sorry Maori boy…

Post 387 – that was the 1996 CC Final with Thierry LaCroix at #10 – in the rain .

The weather completely nullified the much vaunted WP forwards , because the ball went straight in and straight out to Davidson and then LaCroix controlled from pivot .

Call back the past……. but the other frog was Rounmat at lock…….hardly overflowing with frogs though !!

  • 413.shaka mehlomakulu: Reply to this comment

Sperm samples – now that’s a novel concept – give it to Stan’s mate , the eloquent scientist / cardiologist (and I mean that sincerely) and we could have a super species……. nah , not really , but worth a thought !!!

This thread has registered over FOUR HUNDRED responses already. And all because the very idea of recruiting Fijian talent is oh so controversial!

    And why, exactly?

We are all over a decade into the professional game

If the Fijians are finding that easy to digest, ought any of the rest of us to be squabbling?

  • 415.NZMaori: Reply to this comment

    sweet as bigg.

Yes lets. You were clearly superior in the 1st test. id like to see how er we go with Bond so we leave it till the end yea.

3-nil – your nuts – we will see your fickle light holds out for 2-1 even!! i recon the series is won cause it looks light to get worce to be honest. Hope we stage a revival. Two evenly matched sides capable of beating each other on their day – may the best team win

    NZMaori,

merely that it would be nice for countries like Fiji, Samoa, Tonga to field their own national teams or a combined polynesian PI team which would add even more compeition to the current test-playing nations. Argentina and Italy have made huge improvements, i think a PI team would be at the top of the XV man game within a few years given the right support.

  • 423.bliksem: Reply to this comment

cab demographics may be a problem.Fiji has something like 203 islands, not all of them populated as such but still lots of talent I reckon on small islands.

Howzit….didnt watch any ruggas this weekend…was in Heroldsbay….so when I called my brother to hear the stormers score/ bulls score…he was so angry and bad tempered and frustrated and and and!! So I came to the conclusion that (In my relaxed state of mind) our rugby will only kill me….so not planning on watching too much anymore this year….maybe if they fire Fester…..have a decent plan, look like using OUR youngsters, and chasing away the overrated pieces of **** that calls them selves Boks….

Cab i agree. the more we foster pacific island rugby the better our game.

I was a fan of the Tri nations being extended to the 5 nations with the Argies and a P.I team.

At evry world cup a P.I team has a blinder or causes an upset. The world looks on them and turns their back. SANZA officials are all in it for themselves.

In summary i agree with all efforts to foster and develop pacific island rugby but put up with no protests about the polynesians in the all blacks. they are kiwis

  • 433.NZMaori: Reply to this comment

Mallet. Make some money some other way. And what a shame for your province. i bet the next Chester Williams resides there and will be overlooked for some brainless fijian. they are good at 7′s but good luck teaching them 15s. They are thick – really nick doesnt know what he is doing

  • 434.toddke: Reply to this comment

    Keo,

Mallet is a fool. Firstly, “if NZ can do it why can’t the rest of the world?”. Because we do not understand the connection between NZ (remember NZ is not just white immigrants but Maori) and the other polynesian islands. They have a similar relationship as we have with Zimbos, like Teichmann, Garvey, Skinstad.

Secondly, this is a slap in face of the minor unions like Fiji. Rather Mallet, if a true believer in world rugby would rather provide coaching expertise to these smaller unions.

Thirdly, this is a slap in the face of every talented township player, who hasn’t been given any opportunity to ever be able to afford a pair of boots never mind join a club.

Go to the townships you tosser, there’s a few million, genetically blessed an untapped talent there. How you can applaud that is beyond recognition. As you sometimes accuse others take off your blinker chap. Try develop what you have first, which he doesn’t seem capable of doing right now.

To say that 98% of the polynesions were either born in nz ir moved over as toddlers is a popular kiwi defense but i did a bit of research on the net a few years back and what i found was that its not anywhere near the truth the majority of polynesion allblacks or even super series players make the move during the latter part of their high school careers usually due to them getting rugby bursaries from the more prominent nz rugga high schools. Rockokocko , Sivivatu and oz lock/flanker (cant remember his name) are one of many examples of this.

    The Bill

If u want to see skill with ball in hand, then go down to the bo kaap and watch the lighties play with skill, vision and flair. These guys live rugby, they play in the streets day nd night. The problem with the Cape is that they have so much talent that they dont now where to start. They have huge skillful forwards from Maties and players with pace and natural ball skills all over the place, especially players of colour. Why do you want to import young moaries, it will deprive our youngsters of the opportunities to play. Import and experienced flyhalf instead!

  • 444.bluebarb: Reply to this comment

If any sanity prevailed, Nick would be on a shopping trip for COACHES! JDV is a brilliant player. DwB was good at one stage, Jouba had talent to burn. It seems they had the brilliance coached right out of them. Kind of like polishing a Ferrari with steelwool. The basics are still there, but becomes dull and boring.
We are going to take talented players from the Islands and destroy them. How does that solve our problems?

  • 445.cab: Reply to this comment

bliksem, didn’t realise there were so many islands, you seem to be well informed about that part of the world, yip good point, could be hard to get a practice together.

NZMaorie, dont mind kiwis playing for the AB’s, but think the usurping of talent from the PI’s is going to far. Its good to get to see these guys play at the top level, but they’d be a force in their own right. Watching the fijian 7s the other day, amazing athletes, make everyone else look a bit ridiculious. Thought Serebi was special, but that youngster William Ryder has incredible acceleration and hands.

cab also they are very family orientated. There has been a couple who gets homesick and just dissapears for a couple of days and miss training.Caucau is one of them if I am not mistaken.

  • 448.NZMaori: Reply to this comment

Yes cab but 7′s is an unstructured game, Vuninbaka a classic example for the crusaders. Best at 7′s ever but brilliant and shocking at the 15 man game – and besides they only make wingers. Serevi was the man but never made it in 15′s.

A Hangi – well for those who dont know its a pit dug in the ground and sacks of meat, fish and vegetables and put in the ground over hot rocks and ‘steamed’ in a natural way for hours whilst the pit is filled with the soil. Food is infused with a unique amazing taste.

Now for how to do one is a copletely different matter – its protocol, tapu and procedure, not something i can explain. Maori protocol is taught verbally, not thru interent chat. Sorri Pal
