Trevor Halstead’s Munster will play Biarritz in the European Cup final in Cardiff next month after thrashing Leinster 30-6 at Lansdowne Road.
The former Sharks and Springbok centre scored an interception try in the final seconds to seal an emphatic victory for the Limerick side.
Denis Leamy’s first-half try put Munster out to a 10-point lead, before Ronan O’Gara and Halstead’s late efforts ended Leinster’s challenge.
O’Gara was superb in both general play and with the boot. In contrast, Leinster No 10 Felipe Contepomi self-destructed on a frustrating afternoon for the Argentinean.
Having suffered heartbreaking defeats in two European Cup finals – to Northampton and then Leicester and Neil Back’s Hand of God – Munster now have a third opportunity to lift the silverware against a Biarritz side that defeated Bath 18-9 over the weekend.
Munster – Tries: Denis Leamy, Ronan O’Gara, Trevor Halstead. Conversions: O’Gara (3). Penalties: O’Gara (3).
Leinster – Penalties: Felipe Contepomi (2).
