Biarritz hooker Benoit August faces up to a two-year ban after being cited for gouging in his club’s 18-9 European Cup semi-final victory over Bath at the weekend.
August was cited by former Irish referee John West for a dangerous tackle on Bath lock Danny Grewcock, including contact with the eyes, just before half-time of Saturday’s match, Sapa-AFP reported.
The tackle of the Biarritz captain, who could miss the final against Irish side Munster on May 20 in Cardiff if found guilty, was screened on television at half-time.
According to International Rugby Board rules, a dangerous tackle earns a suspension between two weeks and six months, though contact with the eyes or eye area risks a ban of between three months and two years.
The date and venue for August’s appearance before a European Cup disciplinary panel were not immediately given.
