Butch James survived 50 minutes of Vodacom Cup rugby and could be in the Sharks 22 to play the Stormers in the Vodacom Super 14.
James, who had not played a first class game for more than a year, has been training with the Wildebeest for the last month and it was crucial he was well managed in his comeback. This has been done, with 50 minutes the maximum you would expect him to have played.
James’s successful return coincides with the news that Tony Brown won’t play again in the competition. Brown broke bones in both hands and missed the second half against the Bulls. He certainly will remember his first South African derby up north. Percy Montgomery slotted in well at flyhalf and Sharks coach Dick Muir has several options against the Stormers.
The chances are he will play Monty at flyhalf and introduce James in the second half for a match that could be a great advertisement for SA rugby.
