Roets on Irish shopping list

Roets on Irish shopping list

Injured Bulls fullback Johan Roets may be lost to South African rugby entirely if he does not earn a call-up from Springbok coach Jake White this year.

Roets, arguably the form fullback in the country before a knee injury forced him out of action two weeks ago, has been knocking on the door of Springbok selection for some time, but as yet has not been let in.

But he may yet get a chance to display his talents at Test level, and quite possibly at the 2007 Rugby World Cup – but not in the green and gold of South Africa, but for the green of Ireland.

His wife, Bronwyn – whom he married in December last year – has an Irish passport and he could qualify to play for them before next year’s World Cup and has already been approached to go and play there at the end of this season. It is something the in-form No 15 has been contemplating for some time and he is apparently giving it serious thought.

Whether he is in White’s plans remains to be seen, but a place in the Bok squad could be further hampered by having to undergo an operation on his injured knee in the next few weeks.

While the seriousness of the injury does not require immediate action, the Bulls are hoping that Jaco van der Westhuyzen remains injury free so they do not have to call on Roets in the remaining games in the Vodacom Super 14.

White would be well-advised to snare the Bulls man, as he is certainly among the best in his position in South Africa. The national coach has Percy Montgomery as his first-choice, while van der Westhuyzen is an able understudy. However, if injury or a serious drop in form is experienced by either, Roets would certainly be more than capable of making the transition to the top level.

Other choices open to White – looking at the players in SA’s Super 14 franchises – include young Sharks prodigy JP Pietersen, Stormers speedster Joe Pietersen, Cheetahs’ Bevin Fortuin and Conrad Jantjes, although the latter has been played out of position for much of the competition.

Monty is too old, too slow and to unsafe under the high ball. Jaco is a better option at fullback for the boks.

  • 52.Moegrat: Reply to this comment

Ciccino i agree Jaco is better at fullback but then who are you going to select on flyhalf???

Reason i said Monty on fullback is cause Jaco is the flyhalf in my WC07

    Moegrat,
You like JW policies? Enjoy the rest of the year

Roets is a real 100 % commitment player who is very consistent, We are losing too many of these types of players who are probably not good enough to be a regular for the boks but still contribute to the quality of our domestic competition which is important.

Flyhalf is a real problem. …?????
the best of the bad bunch is pretorius though he plays hot and cold and very very fragile under presure. Bossman – didn’t lived up the expectation (may be 12 is a better position for him). Being a Stayn’s fan I would like to see him tryed at 10 at least against world 15, scots and see how it works. May be Monty at 10? And they could interchange with jaco during the match? I don’t know 10 is the worst biks problem. But I strongly believe Jaco is much better fullback then flyhalf and he can bring more at 15 then 10.

It’s the same old problem of place kicking, isn’t it? Why don’t other players besides flyhalves and fullbacks develop their place kicking? Don’t they realise that this is an asset that would go a long way to increasing their value?
Mortlock and Giteau are both centres which allows the Brumbies the freedom of not worrying about Larkham. Place kicking is not a required skill for a 10.

  • 57.Moegrat: Reply to this comment

Yes i do, he’s policies brought us from the laughing stock of the rugby world to the second best (and we’ll be no.1 again very soon)

Only reason Bulls supporters dont like Jake is cause he doesnt select their players

  • 58.Moegrat: Reply to this comment

Nah im not talking about placekicking.

Im saying Jaco is the only player that can get our backline on the run

  • 59.wpw: Reply to this comment

Roets is a good player. Problem is, if he gets game time at 15 who is going to kick the goals? AP is not consistent enough and frankly i dont rate him as our answer to flyhalf… I would have Percy or Jaco at 10 and Fourie at 15. When he started his career for the Lions he was brilliant at 15.

    15-Fourie
    14-Paulse/Ndungane/Chavanga
    13-JDV/Joubert
    12-DWB/Olivier
    11-Habana/Jantjes
    10-Percy/Jaco/Bosman

Joe Pieterson a bok candidate LOL! Jeez andrew are u starting a stormers version of the rapports “Maak die bulle almal bokke” campaign, The other Pieterson. JP is real talent though but this is definately too soon for him.

    wpw

Sounds like an idean but its a bit of a gamble to experiment with that in the Bok setup. Damn i wish Fourie played for province

  • 62.wpw: Reply to this comment

JFourie is the most consistent backline player we have in SA. Let’s hope he can stay injury free until the WC. I have no problem with him at 13 either. He would be great at 15 though… Then we can have DWB’s solid defence at 12 and JDV at 13…Hope Ruan gets a call up. I would have Ruan, FDP and Bolla as the scrum halves. De Kock is playing well too…

I agree with you there. He’s the only one who actually takes the ball at pace close to the advantage line.

  • 64.Moegrat: Reply to this comment

And his got a brilliant pass on him

  • 65.sipes: Reply to this comment

What a bunch of wankers you lot are!

Where is Roets holding JW to ransom? He has a choice to make. He realises that he won’t be a regular in the Bok side, but that he might get a show in when the nr 1 and 2 fullbacks are injured.

If he had a choice between 1 bok cap and 100 Irish caps, Roets would take 1 bok cap. That’s the type of person he is.

But if he isn’t gonna get a chanve to just play for the Boks once, then he needs to consider going for an Irish cap. It makes sense.

  • 66.Redox: Reply to this comment

I also think jaco should be the bok flyhalf, Pretorious has a tendency to run across the field and not attack the advantage line ditto bosman. I also think pretoors doesnt play the situation there are times when a good skip pass is useful but he overdoes it and quite often skips the overlap.

  • 67.pierre: Reply to this comment

Good, piss off Roets. Come back when you’ve learned how to catch a ball.

  • 68.gecko: Reply to this comment

Come on – this is a rugby site – don’t they know the rules? Roets played for SA A under Straueli – thus can’t play for any other country.

Poor journalism – just sensasionalism if you ask me.

  • 69.gecko: Reply to this comment

David – post 50 – Greeff played in 2001 Currie Cup (as sub) – so he has got that as well.

  • 70.Drunkmonkey: Reply to this comment

sipes post 65 .. great post.

i see no reason that ppl dish roets. Im sure playing for bulls is better than playing for boks cos in bulls u know the best players play.

  • 71.londonshark: Reply to this comment

Gecko, does SA A count. Its test caps that count??

  • 72.munkiboi: Reply to this comment

Jaco’s performances at 15 for the bulls are a clear indication just how far off international standard Roets really is. they’re just in a different league in my opinion.

Steady and solid are not the attributes you want in your fullback if you have any hope of winning the world cup.

  • 73.munkiboi: Reply to this comment

well spotted and pointed out Gecko. shame on this website and their shocking journalism!

Besides, Ireland are quite well stocked at fullback, with both Hickie and Murphy more than capable.

  • 74.Anvil: Reply to this comment

    Andrew,

Explain how Roets can play for Ireland in 2007 without qualifiing via the 3 year residential rule and not having an Irish blood line.

and even that being the case you implying that they will shoo him into the national team without seeing what he can do in the premeirship ?

As good as he is I dont think Roets will get a Bok call up.Agree with some of the posters that he’s solid.

Methinks Aussie is the next place to go.

  • 75.londonshark: Reply to this comment

Anvil, his wife is Irish. Its like how Aussie Clyde could play for the sheep shaggers cause of his grandmother.

  • 76.spokie: Reply to this comment

Jaco is n beter heelagter, sal die Bulle goed doen om hom te laat gaan!

  • 77.londonshark: Reply to this comment

Or do you need blood?? Mmmm, I’m confused.

  • 78.Anvil: Reply to this comment

Londonshark, Clyde’s Nan was a sheep so thats acceptable. You mean they allow it for spouses too ?

    I ‘m confused too.

  • 79.cab: Reply to this comment

ah ****, this is not right, all our players end up playing for the oppo, good player this, will be a real pity if he plays for IReland.

  • 80.munkiboi: Reply to this comment

londonshark – residency can be achieved very quicky through a spouse. It is when one needs to fulfil naturalisation first (i.e become eligible by spending enough time in a country) that it becomes a more timeous process. thats my understanding and experience anyways.

  • 81.gecko: Reply to this comment

London Shark – a country ‘second team’ and sevens team binds you. There were cases where players got dispensation – Mils Muliaina played 7′s for Samoa as Junior Muliaina, and that Ozzie scrumhalf that got a few test caps for NZ (playes for Auckland) – he played 7′s for Oz years previously, but those are the new rules.

Moegrat from nowhere to #2 and the only reason why we are not #1 is his stuborness , he was the dude who cost us the 1st place

remember his scrap with VM in his first year , dropping him in the first 2 games , his love relationship with the 3rd best hooker in Sa costing us lineouts in crucial times in close tests , and the ever learning teacher, wonder how clever the Boks will be with all this learning.

    Stan,
Greef has never been the best fullback in any country. If he was the only fullback left in the world, he would still not be the best.
he may have been the most consistently average player, but not best.

  • 87.ddrek: Reply to this comment

Mrs Roets is Luuuuvvverrlyy…..shows that being a pro sportsman altho nearly as ugly as Roets could have done for me.
Glad Roets wont play for Boks not with that up n under **** and his one dimensional game ,which he does well at times….decent but not what we need. I want AP to reach form at 10 and Jaco stay at 15 ,YEAH,and Percy on bench

  • 88.Stan: Reply to this comment

    bluebarb,
    I disagree.
In 2003, Greeff was our best fullback.

  • 89.zama: Reply to this comment

roets is the most consistant fullback in SA… not only this year but the last 3 seasons…
**** he deserves his green jersey!
Bet you he’s still happy with his 3 CC trophees!! I’ll be…

  • 90.Mongril: Reply to this comment

The real advantage that Roets has over other 15′s playing the game is methods of self motivation…

He can look himself in the eye (without using a mirror)!

Geez – have you checked how wierd that dude’s eyes are?!

  • 91.rednik: Reply to this comment

Roets is not of international quality. he has neither the pace, the handling skills or the wit to take the step up. Reminds me of a plonker that used to play for Italy, Just as ugly and stupid. GERT PEENS was the bonehead’s name. Mercifully they dropped him.

  • 92.superBul: Reply to this comment

With a name like Mongril do you even have mirrors in your house

  • 93.rednik: Reply to this comment

Never would the Irish consider Roets anyway, get real! Nor would the provinces.

  • 94.Drunkmonkey: Reply to this comment

    roets

Is baie better as conrad jantjies. Al rede hoekom jaco heelagter speel vir bulls is omdat roets beseer is.

  • 95.Stan: Reply to this comment

Met n naam soos Mongril behoort n veearts jou uit te sit….
WDF het sy oë met sy spelpeil te doen?

  • 96.Kitty: Reply to this comment

    Morning boys!!

  • 97.sarky: Reply to this comment

Roets needs to look afte his future. If it means having an op and reassessing his options so be it.

Playing the man injured is dumb. If he comes back as improve as Percy did then the country will benefit. The issue of whether or not he will play for Ireland is a non starter as mentioned elsewhere. He’s the form full back not another Messiah.

  • 98.Mongril: Reply to this comment

    More Stan!

Dis baie positief vir sy spel – hy kan sien wie agter hom is as hy hardloop en kan rond-om losgemale sien!

En my veearts is baie tevrede met my pels noudat ek na Bob Martin’s oorgeslaan het!

  • 99.bluebarb: Reply to this comment

    Stan,

  • 100.yoda: Reply to this comment

Please dont go roetsie!!!!!! The bulls need you for a long time still. Ask frikkie and jaco, its kak overseas…
