SA player drain continues

The player drain from South Africa is continuing unabated with the news that veteran Western Province flank Hendrik Gerber and under-utilised Cats star Gerhard Vosloo will be moving to France.
Gerber will go to Brive, while Vosloo has signed for Castres. Both men have had minimal time in Super 14 rugby this year and are clearly looking for a new challenge.
Former Springbok wing Pieter Rossouw told the Cape Times the loss of Gerber was a particularly big blow for rugby in the Cape. “Losing Hendrik will be a setback for any team, but he was No 1 last year and now he is No 7. The experienced players are being shipped out
to make way for youngsters.”
Rossouw recently sung the praises of the hard-running Vosloo in the Cape Times, saying he was deserving of a spot in the Springbok squad.
“Gerhard has played very well this year and is one of a few loose forwards who can carry the ball over the advantage line. I definitely feel he deserved a place in the group. But I notice that he seems to have been dropped from the Cats side,” said Rossouw.

Ig looks like Rossouw also rated Vosloo very highly, hope it doesn’t come back to bite SA in the bum.

Carlos Spencer is shitting himself right about now and trying to work out if he will have to face Gerber in some Europe comp.

Yea – Vosloo impressed me in last years CC and the begining of the S14 – will be a blow to the Cats……Sad to see ole Drik go though – he was a Wp stalwart – who probably deserved more – often under appreciated !

Gerber is a has been, its good that he is making way for the youngsters to come through. He should have asked to play VC to be a role model for the youngsters in the team. But i support his decision and wish him well to earn a few extra bucks before he retires

The problem is that all our “has beens” leave and the youngsters have nobody to learn from. You only need to look at the Sharks to see how valuable the so-called veterans have been to their cause this year.

We should probably send some of our young players to get coached and gain experience in Europe. Leave the old buggers at home.

And this is just the beginning , i think we going to loose alot more players next year or after the CC season. To many good players in south africa at the moment. Alot of players are not going to get playing time during the CC this year. Vodacom Cup players and S14 players competing to play on a regular basis in the CC. Don’t think that’s going to help south african players who wanne become springboks in the next few years

It doesnt matter whether or not these guys are good enough to play for the boks as vetkoek says we need okes like Roets and Gerber to stay to aid the development of our young players

Boome keeps taking his gap years in SA. He plays out a 2 year contract overseas, comes back here for a season and then goes back again. A bit of commitment to his chosen union would be nice. I keep getting the feeling that SA is his last resort when all else fails

Real pity about Gerber.
Adri Badenhorst was anonymous when playing while Joe was injured. Gerber would have been a much better inclusion.

Frankly Ludicrous seems to have his talent spotting cap on again as we lose another Cats prospect.
Jokes aside, I’d prefer it if those guys on the fringes of selection but never really used by JW took a 2 year contract overseas. Other than Lardy, who did’nt make the grade anywhere, they’ve all improved from the experience.
I really think that one or two surplus loosies, wings and guys like Roets, Russell and company should make the move now because they won’t be used in the Bok squad. After the WC there’ll be a shed load of OZ, Kiwi’s and others wanting to join the club scene and probably drive the price down.
If there is no accommodation for the nearly selected, then it’s better all round if they make the trip. With Mallet’s view that we cut back on the 600 odd professionals in the country, it makes economic sense. You can’t condemn a player with another 3 or 4 seasons left in him to be the ‘old’ head for the youngsters when they will probably be tossed straight after RWC.

gerber’s departure is not a disaster – he’s had a good career and this is the best move for him and for province who have plenty of proven and emerging talent – joe, schalk, luke, david hendricks, badenhorst, mjelck, karremaker and louw.

vosloo is a different story. one of frans ludeke’s most serious failings is his inept selections. he let naas olivier leave the region and picked tiaan snyman for the first few games until he did the honorable thing and fell on his sword. julies and sephaka are two quality players who have played well for the boks against the best sides in the world, and he prefers the likes of doppies and pietman. sa regions have always had sufficient forward resources, and ludeke started the season with a lot more proven talent in his backs than, for example, **** muir. their failure to deliver is an indictment on his selections and coaching. never liked the cats, but ludeke has embarrassed all south african rugby supporters this year.

If a player is not in JW’s Bok plans it is far better for the player to take-up an overseas contract. Our teams hasn’t got what it takes to win the S14 at present and in the globalised world the CC has little value. What’s the use of winning the CC and not being able to at least reach the S14 semis? And these days playing overseas can still bring Bok honors anyway. What concerns me is not players like Gerber and Vosloo going – but all the great young talent we will never see playing in/for SA. Talented youngsters are leaving in their droves opting for a less politicised rugby and social environment.

I agree Gerber is a far better than Badenhurst and even coming off the bench for SB, LW and JvN he is the best the Stormes got as tthe fourth loose forward, so let him go is questionable wisdom
Again, the Stormers let go the likes of Pat Barnard, Dan Human, Pieter Dixon, Charel Marais, Robbie Kemson, K Vissagie, Boome and H Lowe but yet retain Andrews, Shimanga and possibly welcome back Davids, well, it’s a trend now!
