Sharks’ million-man headache

The Sharks have signed Namibian international and former Bulls prop Kees Lensing for R1.5million a year, but it is a signing with complications. Lensing is supposed to play for London Irish.

Lensing, according to his agent Jason Smith, gave London Irish a commitment and agreed terms with them for the 2007 season. However, the player and Sharks Commercial Manager Rudolf Straeuli concluded their own deal, which makes Lensing the highest paid rugby player in South Africa.

The tough Namibian international is not eligible to play for the Springboks.

Smith told Keo.co.za that he was considering legal action and the Sharks franchise were aware of the ethical issue at play.

London Irish are believed to be contemplating some sort of action as well and it may be that they ask that Lensing not be allowed to play anywhere until the issue is resolved.

Keo.co.za will report the Sharks’ response shortly.
