White’s captaincy poser
4 May 2006
John Smit’s fitness probably occupies most of Jake White’s time because Smit’s successor is unlikely to play test rugby this season.
Bok coach White unwisely publicly declared that Cats captain Wikus van Heerden was the successor to Smit should the Sharks hooker and Bok captain get injured in the Super 14 or the early part of the test season. White went on record to say he did not believe he had a capable international captain in his current squad — a squad that included Cats captain Wikus van Heerden, Stormers leaders De Wet Barry, Jean de Villiers and Schalk Burger, as well as Cheetahs captain Juan Smith and the Bulls duo of Victor Matfield and Fourie du Preez.
Now what?
Van Heerden thought his season was over because of a knee injury and while the latest is that he may not have to have an operation, it is still unclear when he would be available.
Smit is still there, but has to survive two more Super 14 matches. What happens if the Bok captain is struck with injury? Does White turn to another outsider or does he go cap in hand to the likes of Smith, Matfield, Burger and Barry and tell them that even though he doesn’t rate them as test captains, they now have to lead the Boks?
Rarely has a Bok captain been under so much pressure not to get injured. Rarely has a Bok coach been under such scrutiny for confirming in print what he was thinking.

I agree on JC, but if you are telling me that Big Joke is better than P3 or AJ we are not watching the same S14

If John and Wikus are injured at the same time, there is always AJ. He is playing pretty well these days.

Juan Smith,
Look how his team missed his captaincy. Plus he’s a bloody good player.

Seamus,
Learn how to spell charisma before you try to talk about it.

YoMama remember how danie Craven said “a black man will never wear that springbok jersey” and old Pik Botha, now an ANC member nogal, “there is no chance of a black man ever being the president of this country”. Well the black man will soon be leading your beloved springbok rugby team. get used to it. While at it go hump so koeie op jou pas se weivelde.

CapeFlatsboy,
I believe that we will one day have a black Springbok rugby captain/coach anything.
My point is though, that they should be the best candidates. Shimmie is nowhere near anything close to Springbok quality, let alone Bok captain quality. Making him the captain would be based purely on race, which would be unfair on him and the work of everyone in this country who have fought to ensure that representation of people be fair and equitable.
I would rather have Paul Delport as Bok captain some day. When a quality dark black comes along, then I would support him 100%.
As you say I am a beloved Bok supporter. Anything in a green jersey would have my idolization
