The enlarged Springbok squad is set to be announced this weekend, but one of the main fringe contenders still has no idea whether he is in or not.
Springbok coach Jake White recently proclaimed that Cats captain Wikus van Heerden would be next in line should incumbent Bok skipper John Smit get injured in the line of duty.
The announcement, several weeks ago, raised eyebrows in some quarters, not least from van Heerden himself who only heard of the comments when contacted by this website.
But the news has had some weeks to sink in and with the injury that has ruled him out since the clash with the Sharks, he has had plenty of time to focus on the possibility of a return to the green and gold.
Logic then would seem to indicate that van Heerden is a certainty for White’s first Bok squad of the year, but the tearaway flanker has had no contact from any of the Bok management. That his name will be among the 45 or so announced on Saturday evening is still tentative.
“I have heard nothing,” van Heerden told keo.co.za. “I’m just waiting like the rest of the guys to hear on Saturday night. Obviously it would be a great bonus and honour to be included again.”
Van Heerden will be back on the training field from next week, which means his injury will not preclude him from being in the squad. “In fact, if the Cheetahs game was played on Monday night, I may have got a run, but the specialist decided not to risk it. I’ll be ready if selected.”
But, it may be policy from White and co that none of the players already in the group know of their fate for sure. The announcement will be made live on M-Net following the Stormers and Bulls Vodacom Super 14 derby at Newlands on Saturday night.
