WP deny axing rumours

Western Province have denied reports that director of rugby Nick Mallett, coach Kobus van der Merwe and technical director Gary Gold will be fired this week.

WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd managing director Rob Wagner told the Cape Times: “I’m sick and tired of rumours. It’s becoming ludicrous and childish. I don’t know where these things are coming from.

“We are busy with an evaluation and once we have done that we will find out where the system needs to be tweaked.”

The speculation about the coaches’ positions surfaced following feedback from players.

One Cape Times source described the feedback about Stormers management as “scathing”.

Rugby365 reported yesterday that the matter would come to a head at a WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd board meeting tomorrow.

However, WP Rugby Football Union chief executive Theuns Roodman and WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd board member Johan Cronjé denied any meeting had been scheduled for this week.

“There won’t be a board meeting and not one of them is going to be sacked,” Cronjé told the Cape Times. “We have structures in place whereby there are evaluations biannually after the Super 14 and Currie Cup. We’re busy with an evaluation and that has not been finalised. We should not be hasty.

“It will take a lot to convince me that sacking the coaches is the solution. There is not one of them that I would like to see leave. I think we may be able to achieve what we want with the same coaches. The Super 14 was an adjustment for them to a higher level.”

“…we will find out where the system needs to be tweaked.”

The system needs a complete overhaul not just a tweak.

If they fire Fester, who will they put in his place??? I think Mallett must be the head coach. Or someone from outside, way outside!!

I don’t think Mallet is allowed to coach yet. They should secure the services of the Blues or the Reds coaches.

The Stormers coaching staff must please release the details of ALL the improvements during the season so the fans can be informed. I personally have seen none. Otherwise go stuff up somebody elses team.

Yes Rob, just as we, the supporters, are getting sick and tired of waiting on you directionless bunch of administrators to restore the pride in WP/Stormers rugby.

Please tweak yourself out of that job…

“The Super 14 was an adjustment for them to a higher level.” Surely if you’ve one of the strongest (financially) unions in Rugby, then you get a couch who has either proven himself at this level or has excelled at a lower level. Kobus was struggling with griquas and they throw him in here, why they expected him to succeed I’ll never know.

I would not be too concerned about these denials. The same people also denied losing the Rose brothers last year.

The solution for coach is easy. Dawie Snyman is currently coaching Paul Roos. He has a successful coaching pedigree (remember 5 in a row?). Also he understtands the WP culture, politics & set up.

Any side that capitulates the way they did last saturday needs to question the players as much as the coaches. The rumours have come from the players according to the article, well thats a surprise who else would the lazy ******** blame, themselves? NOT!!!

Would be great to have Solly back at Newlands.

Bit of a joke that the players who are responsible for the team’s position on the log are “scathing” of the coaches.

Couple of them need to go too

    Lawrence,

It’s Dawie’s son that is coaching Paul Roos…
Not bad for a 24 yr old

can someone please tell me how the tri-nations is going to work this season how many times do play each other and where do play the wobblies and AB

Dawie Snyman! Ha, ha, ha. Lets go back 20 years shall we, The guy knows **** about rugby, thinks he does, but does not. Leave him at Paul Roos where he is guaranteed a team of Elite athletes who are man for man better than everybody they play ,and dont need to be coached.
    Get real.

Rednik man for man better? So no coaching required?

Is that also why the bulls smacked the Stormers. I mean the stormers had what was it 11 boks?

  • 25.mossel: Reply to this comment

How does the player feedback work? do they fill in anonoumous forms and hand them up to the man in charge to assess the coach?

How much say will the players have in sacking a coach?

we play NZ twice in SA and once in NZ, and we play Aus once in SA and twice in Aus. Therefore NZ plays Aus twice in NZ and once in Aus

    Wagner,

What is it you wanna achieve at WP rugby??!!! To make as much money as possible…**** the result of the game????? Cause that is how it seems at the moment!!! Telling us that these coaches can achieve what you want is utter ****. i know just firing a coach is not a solution but in this case it is. kobus will never coach us to a semi let alone a final!!! i know Solly wasnt grweat, but we were not hanging around at 10, 11th spot for two years in a row when he was there!!! We actually won games in a acceptable way!!!

So fyuck off Rob…..we as loyal WP SUPPORTERS dont want you or these coaches there…WE WANNA win !!!!!!

  • 29.coachie9: Reply to this comment

wagner and paarwater should go. paarwater has done nothing in all the years and always get the assistant coaching job. gary gold should stick with marketing and not coach rugby or try and be an agent. look how well london irish are doing since his left them. wagner made some great signings with the coaches ha ha.

THE STORMERS STOLE THE ORIGINAL BLACK AND WHITE COLOURS OF THE SHARKS. EVERYONE KNOWS THE SHARKS COLOURS ARE BLACK AND WHITE BUT THE STORMERS MANAGEMENT WOULDN’T LISTEN. HEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM : THE STORMERS ARE LOSING ALL THE TIME BECAUSE THEY ARE IN A DIFFERENT COLOUR MAYBE THEY SHOULD GET BACK TO THEIR HOOPS AND STRIPES OF WESTERN PROVINCE. MY PLEA TO STORMERS MANAGEMENT : PLEASE GIVE THE BLACK AND WHITE COLOURS BACK TO THE SHARKS. IF YOU DO SO THEN THE STORMERS WILL STARTING WINNING AGAIN OTHERWISE YOU CAN SAY THERE IS A CURSE PLACED ON THE STORMERS FOR CONTINUING IN THE BLACK AND WHITE JERSEY. THE STORMERS ARE GOING TO LOSE ALL THE TIME EVERYTIME!!!!

  • 32.ricane: Reply to this comment

    Durbanshark, I sort of agree.
The Stormers have not earned the right to wear black, and are a disgrace to the colour
There should be a law against teams wearing black if they cannot play rugby or do the Haka properly!

@rednik: Get your facts straight you numpty. Dawie Snyman at Paul Roos is Snr Dawie’s nephew the son of Jackie Snyman a Sprinkbok. For your information Snr Dawie was Doc Cravens understudy and if you think he knows nothing about rugby you need to seriously question what the hell you know about rugby.
