Bok crocks uncovered
22 May 2006
Only 16 of the 31 Springboks at Jake White’s training camp were fit enough to be tested.
The alarming statistic, excluding the Bulls players, was released by the Springbok medical and conditioning staff.
Players who did not participate in the testing last week and the new arrivals at the training camp will on Friday undertake their mandatory medical assessments and fitness and conditioning testing at the University of Free State.
Here is the official medical update as supplied by the Springbok medical and conditioning staff:
1. Medical Assessments
– Three players were unable to attend the training camp as they required, and subsequently underwent, surgery – they were Andre Pretorius, BJ Botha and Marius Joubert.
– Players currently rehabilitation include Ashwin Willemse, Guthro Steenkamp and CJ van der Linde.
– Players with specific musculoskeletal medical conditions had their protocols modified accordingly – 16 players were able to do all fitness testing.
– Players underwent fitness testing and no injuries were sustained during fitness testing.
– A total of 31 players were assessed, excluding the Bulls players who were involved in a Vodacom Super 14 semi-final match in New Zealand.
– Bakkies Botha, Bryan Habana and Pedrie Wannenburg all sustained injuries whilst on duty for the Bulls and require medical assessments
2. Medical Analysis and recommendation
– Of the 31 athletes seen, 32% were symptomatic of muscuskeletal problems
– A total of 72% of the symptomatic athletes had lower limb injury problems compared to 21 % upper limb related problems.
– Those athletes with symptomatic problems are currently undergoing management that include further investigations, constant re-evaluation and treatment.
– The ongoing lower limb prevention program, devised by the medical team, will continue as a primary prevention strategy.
– Of particular concern is the fact that the athletes never have adequate time for proper rest and reconditioning.
3. Impact of injuries on training and conditioning
– The conditioning staff reduced the volume of training sessions as well as the intensity-level of every session significantly
– Conditioning and medical staff continuously monitor the intensity levels of training sessions and the levels of fatigue.
Note: Medical report, analysis and recommendation supplied by the Springbok medical and conditioning team spearheaded by Dr. Yusuf Hassan (Team Doctor) and Dr. Derik Coetzee (Head of Conditioning).

What are the contra-indications and risks of overdosing? What is the active ingedient and in which quantities should the medication be taken.
Is it safe for use by pregnant women?
Yawn…

only players without injury are the Stormers as they did not play rugby during the Super14.

This is bad news. Seems like a B grade movie with a bad script. It stars Jake White in the role as Florenece Nightingale.

So when are we going to wise up and give these guys a decent off season? “Of particular concern is the fact that the athletes never have adequate time for proper rest and reconditioning.”

gee liewer info oor wie is die vinnigste, sterkste, domste ensv info wat ons gewone mense sal van hou, nie Butch se lies pyn nie.

Christo die domstes is nog oppad terug van Nieu-Seeland af.

I agree with Garth Wright’s view expressed on All Out Rugby.
How is it possible that our players are so frail and the players in overseas teams seem better off? It can only because they’re not keeping up the same level of fitness.
Our players are unprofessional. Look at the visible conditioning of the Crusaders. Our players are lazy and uncommitted.

How the hell is Ashwin Willemse still in contention – when last has he even played a game?
It feels like it was last century?

I personally do not think that on present form Habana, Matfield or Bakkies Botha deserve to be in the starting Springbok lineup.
Sure Habana has scored a couple of tries in the Super 14, but that is only because the rest of our teams’ defence was so woeful, even a grandma could’ve scored.

This is absurd. Surely now an arranegment will be made to give the players four months off each year to recuperate and strengthen?!

Christo, ja-nee, ek is lekker grootbek vir ‘n leeu…

Storm it is the players right to strike and not train properly.Last year Jake said the players where unfit and everbody laughed at him . It seems its the same again this year.
22 May 2006, 17:00 pm
The rest of them ate too many pies and faked injuries because they knew they were unfit and didn’t want to be blasted when their results proved this.

In my opinion 1/2 of this is due to preseason base fitness levels and 1/2 due to the fact that whenever SA teams play each other they try to bash each other to death
23 May 2006, 09:27 am
maybe because the springboks in the super 14 squads dont need to be on form to be pick and dont have to worry about other players (non boks) who are in form in the same position as jw picked the team on the form they showed before the biblical flood?
Have your say
