SA team for Super 14 final
22 May 2006
An all South African match official team will be in control during the Vodacom Super 14 final this coming weekend.
The inaugural Super 14 final – between the Crusaders and the Hurricanes at Jade Stadium, Christchurch – will at least see some South African participation, after the Bulls and Sharks failed in their quests.
Beleaguered referee Jonathan Kaplan will take charge in the middle.
Kaplan has been the victim of an attack by the Waratahs following their defeat in the semi’s.
Craig Joubert (reserve referee) and Tappe Henning will run the touch. Television Match Official for the match is Jerome Fortuin.
The match kicks-off at 9.35am (SA time).

What about the Australian officials ???
Not one of their teams are involved in the final…Maybe a consolation prize for SA Rugby…

Why not have 2 or 3 TMO’s…It can make the descision making for tries being scored or not so much easier…

All credit to the Refs, but a real crappy consolation prize compared to having a team or two in the final.

That Jonker chap is unlucky not to feature in that lot, fortuin should have been out and henning in there with Jonker running the sideline.

Nah, the team was proberbly selected before the semis. They figured there is a 50% chance of an all New Zealand final, a 50% chance of an Australia/New Zealand final and a 0% chance of a SA/Anybody else final.

You are correct Charlie

Congratulations to Kaplan. Well done, you deserve it.
Looking forward to the game even more now I know the game will flow, with a minimum amount of whistle.
Should get Ewen Mckenzie over to present the Trophy.

I think that SANZAR decicided to avoid Australian referees after Ewan McKenzie started quoting from Eddie Jones’s rule book

Pompies I do still have a life.
I’m a Hurricanes boy, that means I can support one of the teams running with the ball not a whistle!

Go da Canes. It will make a change.
23 May 2006, 08:30 am
Pompies, maybe a change, maybe the start of an era?? Anyway we appreciate the support of everyone-whos-not-from-canturbury and I did cheer for the Bulls last week

I don’t have a problem with any of the refs, I accept they all have their off days, just like the players they are controlling.
This ongoing notion that a ref at S14 level or above is biased is way absurd. Reality is the offending ref is simply controlling the game as they see it. But really!! This fixation with refs has to take a holiday. You Safa’s dwell to long on this sideshow.
A mere handful of major matches throughout history have been decided by a refs call in the dying seconds. And I suggest to all and sundry that if the match was analyzed thoroughly you would find questionable calls elsewhere in the match. All that happened was the whistle blew, much like musical chairs.
So, what point does this rant have. Nothing really, much like this thread.
SANZA have simply selected the best available people to officiate. Congratulations to those who were appointed.
Have your say
