Jake’s hooker horror

Jake’s hooker horror

Springbok captain John Smit may miss the World XV match next weekend.

Smit failed to train with his team-mates at Shimla Park on Tuesday and is still struggling with his groin problem. The Bok No 2 had an operation that forced him to miss several Vodacom Super 14 matches and is being monitored by the Bok medical team.

“John has not yet recovered 100% from his groin operation. The medical team has recommended that he must rest,” Springbok coach Jake White said. “He won’t do any lineout throw-ins, because this could have an impact on his groin injury.”

And to add to White’s woes, former Bulls front-rower Danie Coetzee was hobbling around in a foot brace at practice, which leaves just two fit hookers in the entire squad. Hanyani Shimange though was also absent from Tuesday’s afternoon practice, leaving just Gary Botha to throw in at the lineouts.

Botha has more important things on his mind. He fled Bloemfontein late on Tuesday to be with his wife, Anrike, who is expected to give birth to their first child some time today.

While Springbok management are doing their very best to deflect the focus from the mounting injury list and associated disruptions, it is an inescapable reality that unlike their Antipodean counterparts, the Boks are more severely prone to falling foul to niggles.

This news was offset though by the welcome arrival in Bloemfontein of the Bulls which saw the intensity of the training sessions increase dramatically.

“We were playing it easy for the first few days to give the guys some much needed rest,” assistant coach Allister Coetzee told keo.co.za. “Yes, we are still missing some guys, but we will be getting most of them back in the next few weeks.”

While White is taking the World XV match very seriously, it will be nothing more than a festival ocassion – a Baabaas game in disguise. However, defeat at Ellis Park will be a severe blow at the start of a long season.

And Scotland’s recent fine showing in the Six Nations means they can not be taken lightly either in the two-Test series that follows. France at Newlands will be the biggest test ahead of the expanded Vodacom Tri-Nations.

A groin injury affecting his throwins?
Is that why he’s been cocking up his lineouts?

Mag ons so gestraf wees en geen haker is fiks nie, dan stap Schalk Britz seker in die span in, Of nee daar is nog Chilliboy wat ook beter is. Fok White maak net oop jou oë en kyk, daar is genoeg hakers.

another victim of the “you will be fitter than your opposition, cause you surely are not smarter”
    regime?

Why is alister coetzee still around, we aren’t attacking enough in the bok backline and he was coaching the cats backline, the worst around. Surely he might be the problem?

  • 7.ddrek: Reply to this comment

Rest all the 1st choice Boks and have them all rearing toi go in a few weeks timing it with Brian the Habanero’s return. We need another big Newlands win.
I never rated Newlands as a prime win zone fortress for us,but with that NZ game last seasonand the Storms clubbing the Saders this year,we could make it a bogey team for the kiwi’s if we put our minds to it.
But then again when we put our minds to things too much they usuallu come unstuck. Anyway,a thought perhaps in the kiwi’s minds now ?

can’t understand that the same people who are shouting “player burnout” have a 3 week training camp, do fitness training in the middle of the season, oh and dont forget gym. thats all we see on tv, boks pussing iron!! now that we’re surely not fitter or faster than the opposition, what are we going to do. bore them to death?

    Good one David LOL
Jake’s been visiting Bloems hookers lately to reduce stress, but this last one was a nightmare !

  • 10.rastafox: Reply to this comment

Perhaps Tiaan Liebenberg should keep his boots handy!Unless Jake finds it in his heart to select Schalk Brits!!!!

Its not a horror we are covered at hooker, relax, we do not have a tight head or a fly halve, worry

What is this comment about SA players being more susceptible to injury than their antipodean counterparts.

Of course they are. But there is no secret Gene here. Running out players with un-nagging injuries is a magnet for more injury.

So just stop doing it. Problem fixed.

What’s going on in Bloem ? Go somewhere els to practise , what’s with all the injuries all of a sudden. Maybe the guys wanne go to that beach where they used to train in the pass ? where was that again ?

Please dont try and talk-up Scotland. Even one of our top high school sides could beat them!

Yes, they did well in the 6N, but that just shows how weak that tournament is.

Maybe White will call Brits! I can’t ******* believe he selected Danie Coetzee in the first place

Very cold in Cape Town Andrew. Are you covering the training camp in Bloem?

  • 23.Anvil: Reply to this comment

Agree Capebull. This is just a storm in a tea cup. Both Botha and Shimmange should be available next weekend.

If not, bring not Brtis,Liebenburgh,Badenhorst and how abt little chilliboy ?

  • 24.nicksteroonie: Reply to this comment

Smit should skip the first few games so he can recover fully.

We have more decent opposition to play when we take on Aus and NZ, so let all our 1st choice guys be fully fit!

  • 25.Andrew: Reply to this comment

Bigg – Yup. Not surprised these okes are getting injured. It’s pretty chilly here.

But Jaco looks flippin on fire at flyhalf, admittedly it was just a training run, but he’s giving it a full tonk. Respect.

It’s not all doom and gloom. Balie and Eddy making big impact…

“Hooker horror” headline could come straight out ot “The Sun” tabloid.

When are you going to start a “page 3 player” feature with his tits out? Or bent over if he’s a Bulls/Stormer player?

  • 27.Paws: Reply to this comment

What a great lose … not.

What’s the problem .. we have better hookers not at the camp.

Agree with capebull .. we have bigger problems .. no fly-half .. tighthead … and it would now seem wings.

Mmmmmm .. there are as many players out with injuries who did play s14 as those who did not play s14 … mmmmmmm

  • 28.bigg: Reply to this comment

Andrew – you lucky bugger… Tell Jake White that I think some of his selections are a joke.

bigg, danie coetzee is actually a good player. he never ever had a bad game for the boks. very consistent player…

As for JS not being available, who will lead the side? Wickus perhaps? Then Big Joke and AJ will probably miss out:

    8-Smith
    7-Wickus
    6-Burger

Does no one feel that maybe these injuries to players like Smit & Habana are opening the door and giving Jake no option other than to select exciting players like Schalk Britz & Brent Russell…

  • 38.ddrek: Reply to this comment

Agreed again Pete.Sooner or later, rather sooner,he’ll haveto make some callups ,but perhaps he’;; go for Lucas Van Bilmoeryouman and Nokwe instead !

  • 39.rastafox: Reply to this comment

Any explanation for Danie Coetsee’ injury??

As posted by some muppitts from the UK he missed a few games for his club and now he is all the way back in RSA hobbling around with a foot brace.Seems a little suspect???

As to the venue of the training camp, there is nothing to bring out injuries like ice cold conditions and a hard field.

  • 40.bigg: Reply to this comment

WPW – he has not in the starting 22 for London Irish in their last 2 matches. You starting to sound like JW. I heard a interview with Peter Jooste and he said that their selections are based on current form, now that contradicts their selctions of Solly T, De Wet Barry, Marius Joubert, Danie Coetzee…The selectors actually have no idea why they selected the current players. Why did JW not pick Dulane???? I doubt Solly T would make the Tygerberg 1st team.

By the way Wes, Villagers beat Sky Walmers this weekend.

John has not yet recovered 100% from his groin operation!!!!!!!!! So why the hell was he playing supper 14 rugby.

  • 46.ddrek: Reply to this comment

The selectors and Jake must think we are all dimwitted dooses and will just believe what **** they say.
I think they believe in certain players fitting into their plans and who can work withthem…personally and with john Smit. There is a bit ofblind faith/belief….but when they tell us its on form…that pisses us all off. They must think we dont watch the games or dont really understand them. Ofcourse these guys live and breath rugby ,but form ? …thats a fast one !
