AJ will lead shock Boks
26 May 2006
The Springbok XV team that will be announced next week for the match against the World XV will contain a number of shock selections.
Keo.co.za has reliably learnt the starting line-up for the unofficial Test at Ellis Park on June 3. It differs greatly from several predictions this past week, but at Friday’s “captain’s runâ€, the thinking in the Bok camp became much clearer. And a source close to the camp confirmed what is an exciting and youthful squad.
Uncapped lock pair Andries Bekker and Johann Muller will combine in the second row, while Ricky Januarie and Meyer Bosman will be the halfback pairing. Also, Bulls inside centre Wynand Olivier is to be switched to the No 13 jersey with De Wet Barry alongside him.
Olivier is considered by many as one of the brightest future Boks and his display in this game will be keenly watched. As expected the wings are experienced duo Gaffie du Toit (left) and Andre Snyman (right). Brent Russell gets his chance at fullback.
But as predicted by this site, AJ Venter, will be asked to captain the team in the absence of John Smit. Venter will be skipper when the Boks play a Free State Shimla side in a warm-up match at Vodacom Park this evening. He is expected to be formally announced as captain only next week though.
He has beaten off the challenge from Wikus van Heerden to lead the team, but the Cats flanker will play in the No 7 jersey alongside Venter who will start at No 8.
Baring injury, it seems coach Jake White and co are using this game to experiment with some youngsters ahead of more important matches later in June. It is unlikely that many of these players will feature against Scotland in Durban on June 10.
The front-row of Deon Carstens, Hanyani Shimange and Lawrence Sephaka will have their work cut out, especially with former Bok strongman Cobus Visagie out to prove a thing or two.
Springbok XV to play the World XV:
15 Brent Russell
14 Andre Snyman

12 De Wet Barry

the team has no openside flanker , going to get punished …
So Joe “hate a white line” van niekerk is playing as the fetcher , watson or tim dlulane would have been a better option than this …
shocking to say the least …
26 May 2006, 14:53 pm
the ndungane’s are good, but dont write off old talents like the Gaf; big, fast and very very skillfull.

Bloem
Going to diffrent team does not make him a better player if he then gets game time…..my point is where ever he goes there will be a player better then him and then he will be back on the bench….yes the freestate years was good bud he has never looked the same again…..take jorrie he made the bok team and look at him now he get alot of game time but still is not a good player………….he should not be there end of storie

vinnie played rugby when the fields were still dry and yellow in winter, before tear round sprinklers.
26 May 2006, 14:54 pm
Well Said Katman
26 May 2006, 14:54 pm
So not only are you ignorant and homophobic, but a moron too?
26 May 2006, 14:54 pm
Interesting should be good, but why not start off with ruan and why the hell is DVB playing? Much rather see Juan Smith than Grandpa Wikus
26 May 2006, 14:54 pm
Jake picked this “C” team because he`s afraid he wont get more injuries – what a pissy ??
26 May 2006, 14:54 pm
An under 21 team?
Lagbol.
26 May 2006, 14:55 pm
bluebarb, **** those field on the highveld in winter were like concrete, the worst was all the grassburns that kept getting opened up, one and only time you applied vaseline with pride.
26 May 2006, 14:55 pm
No TV, just keo to keep you posted!!
26 May 2006, 14:55 pm
Bagel -
Wikus is no grandpa ???
26 May 2006, 14:56 pm
lol bluebarb,
HAd my fair share of **** fields.
Had to once play on a field in spine road mitchells plain with very large patches of gravel all over. Had virtually no skin left at the end of the game and it ended 0-0.
26 May 2006, 14:56 pm
Blou_Bok who cares about the result of this match Jake is making the right choice. Imagine more injuries against the Scots and French.
26 May 2006, 14:57 pm
CFB and Vinnie
Need a referee?

My point is that in SA quotas is a reality. Whether we like it or not. The idiots at SARU should take the blame for that. The Ndugane twins were two of the better black players during the Super 14. Yet Jake opt not to selct them. Instead he selects a retreaded centre and flyhalf in that position. However he does choose guys like Shimange, Solly and even Wayne Julies who were **** or did not even play in the S14. What sort of message does that give to guys.
26 May 2006, 14:57 pm
Nah its all over Dawn. Think I already won by a TKO.
26 May 2006, 14:58 pm
CFS, fair enough, but JW also has his consistent selection policy, otherwise we end up with the strauli-viljoen eras with hundreds of players capped and the boks getting shafted each week.
26 May 2006, 14:58 pm
Steyn I agree that there are better hookers than him in SA, but he will get back to form once he starts to play regularly.
My top hookers: 1-Scalk (WP)
2-Smit (Sharks)
3-Gary (Bulls)
4-Shimmy (WP, Must go to Lions)
The thing is none of them will let you down. From a provincial piont of view all of them can start for a Province

Quinntessential u were going tequira. I hear ur pain about The Wet, if Butch was fit he would be playing 12.Apart from that i like all the other combos, i would have preferred Ackerman and Boome to be in

26 May 2006, 15:00 pm
Bigg you big girl’s blouse.
Come out and fight.
You ask me if I’m girl or boy, then you run!
26 May 2006, 15:00 pm
Did you check that Dawn, when I mentioned my connecies in the plain the man loves me again…
26 May 2006, 15:01 pm
**** ****, Bloem Leeu. Send Shimmie up to Gauteng. He’ll become a legend there. Make the Free State sorry for giving him up and make WP sorry for treating him like a token.
26 May 2006, 15:01 pm
agree bloem at 119.
26 May 2006, 15:01 pm
Bagel –
Yeah , youre right , forget this game. But to think further – what would Jake White do if he gets a number of injuries to key players at next years world cup???? He should use the World xv game and Test Series coming up to build Squad depth and to blood players ??
26 May 2006, 15:01 pm
I placed wing stats on the “Jake vs. the rest” thread (especially since keo claimed it is not available).
Every SA wing that played S14, only named the criteria used in that thread though (Tackle s/r, carries/game, def beaten, passes/game and clean breaks/game)
You will all be surprised at every wing you guys were rooting for on their stats.
As the ausie said in that thread, if you have the ball what do you do with it, well it seems with exception of 1/2 in sa not much.
26 May 2006, 15:02 pm
I think this is an exciting team, BUT Wynand must be at 12.
He is an outstanding playmaker and if Jake wants to see the best Wynand Olivier can offer he must play him at 12.
What can “The Law” Barry contribute anyway?
26 May 2006, 15:03 pm
they took us on tour every year to friggin Warmbaths. the one half of the pitch was covered with “duwweltjies” the other was rock hard. i hated that tour.
we never won either.
26 May 2006, 15:03 pm
BrickWall, Bok A means it’s the Bok second side u wally
26 May 2006, 15:03 pm
Hmmmm, please post those stats again. Also try bokrugby.com. I’m quite interested.
26 May 2006, 15:04 pm
Very scared of the plain Vinnie. There are lots of frustrated rugby players who dont get recognised there.
26 May 2006, 15:04 pm
Attie – WO is a good playmaker but then he doent get the ball out wide. He is the reason Habana never saw the ball in the S14. If he learn to pass he will be a great player.
26 May 2006, 15:05 pm
Attie i agree. JW should have played 12. Wynand and 13. Snyman and brink in one of those fast black wingers. Snyman will be wasted on the wing, u need solid chaps at the centres and speedy wings
26 May 2006, 15:05 pm
Attie, The Law will make space for WO to do his playmaking.
JW is right about center play, there is very little space at 12 as it is, so good to have your faster playmaker at 13. cant wait to see that.
26 May 2006, 15:05 pm
lol capeflatsboy.
Some mean boys there. spine road senior secondary wasnt the most hospitable place either…
Ended up playing a bit of basketball with the “locals” after the game… made sure i didnt win that game…
26 May 2006, 15:06 pm
bloem,
thats the same thing they used to say about Ettienne
26 May 2006, 15:06 pm
Leeantonyw
I will also select Snyman at 12 with Foure 13 and JDV at 14
26 May 2006, 15:06 pm
Agreed Bloem. He needs to work on this, but I heard from some sources that distribution is actually what he was really known for as a junior.
Don’t know why he ain’t utilising this presently.
26 May 2006, 15:07 pm
Yeah Dale Sandton comes from Spine Road High. That should tell you about the kind of players they have.
26 May 2006, 15:08 pm
Attie – I think it’s the Bulls gameplan that got it all wrong. Its the coaching and not the players
26 May 2006, 15:09 pm
leeanthowyw
Sorry. The fact that you picked it up proofs that you know what I mean. So whats the problem?
26 May 2006, 15:09 pm
Dale Sandton!!
I have a mate who played Super 12 (and Bok, I think?) with Dale. He said Dale always looked forward to grinding the White Oaks. But in a good way.
26 May 2006, 15:09 pm
Katman i agree, i can’t wait to this team play. I would have liked to have seen Ackerman or Boome there, just for experience and they’re good players.
26 May 2006, 15:11 pm
we played Langlaagte Tech. one year during a rugby day. i’ve never been beaten like that in my life.
26 May 2006, 15:11 pm
Bloem leeu
110% spot on. The bloody stupidist gameplan ever. The fact that they got to the semis is proof that there is class players. At least a few.
26 May 2006, 15:11 pm
Large patches of gravel with splinkler heads in the field…
And you get changed in a classroom without a roof…
Funny thing was we drew 0-0 when we played there and when we played at home got the snot klapped out of us… only thing was we had exactly the same team and their firsts had a bye.
Great sportsmanship sending men to play against boys. These fuckers had kids next to the side of the field… we were 14…
26 May 2006, 15:11 pm
dale Sandton had talent. However uncle jack and charles got the better of him.
26 May 2006, 15:11 pm
Speaking of kak fields, I remember playing a primary school game in Claremont once – the Jo’burg one, not Cape Town’s leafy suburb. The one side of the field had a rectangular drain cover in the 22, a few metres in from touch. And at the other end, the in-goal area sloped away towards the parking area. Add some gravel patches and very little grass plus a typical Jo’burg winter morning and bare feet…
