Boks run amok

Boks run amok

The Springboks scored 18 tries to one to smash Shimlas in a warm-up match at a chilly Vodacom Park on Friday evening.

The match was called off after just 60 minutes after Danie Rossouw crashed over to make the score 90-5 to the Boks. The Boks had led 50-5 at the break.

Shimlas maybe had parity for the first ten minutes of the match and again when JW Jonker scored the try of the game, but ultimately the pace of the match was too much for them.

No less than 15 different players crossed the tryline for the Boks, with Percy Montgomery getting hat-trick – despite only coming on after 33 minutes. Jaque Fourie got a brace with two good breaks, while 13 other players also notched tries.

Thankfully no major injuries were picked up although Ruan Pienaar and Wikus van Heerden had to have treatment on the field. Both men were able to return to duties. Lock Johann Muller also went off the field with what looked like a broken nose. He did not return, but will not rule him out of the World XV fixture.

The scoreline though will not have been the main focus for White. He will have been immensely pleased with the dominance of his forwards – as they should have – and the ability to hold onto the ball and show patience.

After a jittery opening few minutes, when the Boks dropped several balls, they soon found their rhythm and ran in a try just about every three minutes. The performance of the pack will be a huge confidence boost, while the backs also showed why they are rated the best in the land by the coach.

The final scoreline could have been much greater had the Boks opted to go for conversions, but they spurned those chances, which was another possible 36 points.

In the end it was just a chance for the Boks to stretch their legs as White rang the changes. Bigger fish await next weekend, but the true test will only come when the Boks play Scotland on June 10.

Scorers:

Springboks:

Tries: Gaffie du Toit, Wikus van Heerden, Johann Muller, Wynand Olivier, Andre Snyman, Albert van den Berg, AJ Venter, Percy Montgomery 3, Deon Carstens, Jean de Villiers, Jaque Fourie 2, Jannie du Plessis, Brent Russell, Juan Smith, Danie Rossouw.

Shimlas:

Tries: JW Jonker

Key moments:

60 mins: Danie Rossouw crashes over for try number 18. At this stage Jake White calls it and the referee blows the final whistle.

57 mins: Jaco van der Westhuyzen and Monty combine for a one-two, before Monty goes in for his hat-trick. It’s now kick-off, Boks gather, hold on for a few phases and then score.

55 mins: Andre Snyman breaks from inside his own half and feeds Juan Smith who gathers superbly to score another try.

52 mins: Russell dances and weaves his way through for the Boks 15th try. This is now proving nothing. Only injury can occur.

50 mins: Juan Smith is already over the line, but passes to Jannie du Plessis who scores. It’s getting ridiculously embarrassing…and they haven’t tried to kick one conversion.

49 mins: Pienaar is back on and seems fine. Still no Johann Muller.

47 mins: Completely one way traffic. Encouragingly the Boks are now showing good hands and some surprisingly fine innovation. Ruan Pienaar goes down injured.

44 mins: Each time they touch the ball the Boks are looking dangerous. Another fine movement sees Big ?Joe throw a no-look pass to Jaque Fourie and he scores in the corner.

43 mins: Scrum Boks on own 10m line. Sephaka is monstering his opposite number. Snyman superb break past four tackles. Brought down and it is recycled. Quick ball finds Monty on the left wing. Another try under the poles.

41 mins: Jaque Fourie intercepts from the kick-off to score under the poles.

HALF-TIME: BOKS 50 SHIMLAS 5

40 mins: Jean de Villiers makes the Shimlas look silly with a brilliant run on the right to score the Boks 10th try. All ten have been scored by different players. Maybe an indication of how the Boks are toying with their opponents.

39 mins: Deon Carstens breaks from a maul and sprints clear for another try after more forward dominance. The Bok tight five and loosies are just too classy for the Shimlas.

36 mins: Good work by Van den Berg, Venter and Joe van Niekerk frees Monty on the outside for try number 8.

33 mins: Jaco van der Westhuyzen, Ruan Pienaar, Jaque Fourie, Jannie du Plessis, Danie Rossouw, Jean de Villiers and Percy Montgomery on for Boks. Du Plessis penalised at first scrum.

31 mins: Jonker makes another scything break that leaves his more illustrious opponents flatfooted. Luckily the cover defence saves the day, and the Boks rumble forward. A well-worked driving maul ends with captain and No 8 AJ Venter falling over the line.

28 mins: Another Bok try, this time to Albert van den Berg after good continuity by the forwards again. there is nowhere near enough of a contest, especially up front.

25 mins: Shimlas win lineout and swing it wide. Inside centre JW Jonker outstrips the entire Bok defence for a superb individual try that showed both vision and extreme pace.

22 mins: Injury to Johann Muller. Looks like a broken nose. Shimlas into Boks’ half again. Lineout inside 22, Alber van den Berg steals the ball and Bosman clears over halfway.

20 mins: Russell is having a great time and Shimlas just can’t handle him. And while they are preoccupied with the Pocket Rocket, Snyman rounds off a fine move for try number 5.

17 mins: Shimlas have not been in Boks half since 4th minute. Van Heerden all over the place. The bump on the head obviously helped. The Boks are getting into their stride and Januarie, Bosman and Gaffie du Toit are looking good. Knocks have dried up. Olivier bursts through the middle for a try under the poles (and bonus point!).

14 mins: A massive drive sees the Shimlas splinter and Johann Muller is on hand to crash over for the Boks’ third try. It’s just too easy now. Bok pack is dominating now, after early struggles.

13 mins: Van Heerden’s head injury seems fine, but it’s hard to tell as he is wearing headgear. The Boks straight onto attack and into Shimlas 22.

11 mins: Boks straight onto attack and again hold ball well. After swinging left then right and left again, Andre Snyman ploughs ahead and sets up Wikus for a try.

8 mins: Try after the Boks hold onto the ball through several phases. Gaffie du Toit on the wing finishes off untouched after good ball retention by Boks. No conversion taken. Wikus back on.

7 mins: Shimlas making most of the play. The Boks are looking reluctant to take hard hits. Danie rossouw, on for Wikus, makes good yards. Russell and Wynand Olivier combine well down the right. Set up ruck. Roussow slams into Rory Duncan to the delight of the small crowd

5 mins: Penalty Shimlas for offside. They run it. Boks defence is swarming and aggressive, Shimlas are playing well. Another Bok knock.

4 mins: Already three knocks by the Boks, the last by Andre Snyman on halfway. Scrum Shimlas.

3 mins: Wikus van Heerden off for head injury.

1 min: Shimlas kick-off. Big Joe takes. Boks in white training jerseys and short socks. Not really too serious it seems. First stop for Bok knock-on.

Saw Olivier down at 13 with DB at 12. and they say this bok squad is short on pace! blistering pairing that – sa’s slowest 12 paired with a guy who’se fine at 12 but pretty pedestrian at 13. Also what does jake expect to learn? barry’s abilities and limitations are well known and olivier is a specialist 12 so playing him at 13 is hardly a fair chance for him to stake a bok claim. i’d rather see them experimenting with ronnie cook at 13 and olivier at 12 if that is what this trial is about.

used to like the blonde forrester sister..forgot her name now…i think there were two sisters – one with short brown hair…the other with blondish/yellowish hair but a real hustler honey attitude

Congrats to all your wives and hope you enjoy – I got a girl and was dissapionted at first when we found out – but now won’t swop. The first few years ok and then 2-5 man that’s the trebile two’s for 3 years after that it seem ok (she is 5 now) and getting a funny little girl.

  • 128.Andrew: Reply to this comment

Boks are using rush defence and killing shimlas with it….

  • 129.Dingman: Reply to this comment

Jsut saw on ABC tonight…its a proven scientific fact that the majority of men only “grow up” when they reach 25. Grow up as in their brains reach the level of development normaly associated with responsible people.

  • 130.all_stormers: Reply to this comment

Rush defence works for teams not used to big games with weak players – once a teams works this out the risk of it not working kicks in big time

  • 131.Dawn: Reply to this comment

    Dingman that explains a lot.

  • 132.banana boy: Reply to this comment

    thanks Andrew.
Are you watching it live at the moment? and using a laptop?

won’t you hook up a web cam!??? come you know you want to ;)

  • 135.Dawn: Reply to this comment

all stormers what’s your little girl’s name?

    I know. Jean, for JdeV?

  • 136.cmm: Reply to this comment

you have to ask yourself how beneficial a game like this is. Are they playing with any sort of structure?

  • 137.Dingman: Reply to this comment

hey all_stormers – it’s just something to think about – the point of it is that laws have systematically lowered the threshold for responsibilities (eg voting, drinking, driving etc) whilst ignoring the scientific evidence that men (and women to a lesser extent) take a little longer to ‘grow up”

  • 138.all_stormers: Reply to this comment

see on the other tread Bobby playing on sunday but england side weak as most players playing in final on Sat. Also does he not play for London-SA (not London-Irish) that was setup for SA players?

  • 139.all_stormers: Reply to this comment

  • 143.Dawn: Reply to this comment

Saw a cute little kid at Newlands for Bulls Stormers game kitted out in his tiny fleecy Stormers jacket.

BTW Emma is a stunning name. After all naming her Joe or Adri would be a bit much!

  • 144.Dingman: Reply to this comment

is that a rhetorical question cmm?

  • 145.Dawn: Reply to this comment

    Cmm has a point.

Dawn – when I first found out it was a girl the first thought was – ‘what toys do girls like’ since a know what toys boys like.

  • 147.banana boy: Reply to this comment

Poor Shimlas, feel sorry for the boys! would have been better putting the SA under 21′s against the boks. That would have been better!

  • 148.cmm: Reply to this comment

no, I’d really like to know – someone on this thread is watching the game, I was kinda hoping for an answer.

  • 149.all_stormers: Reply to this comment

benefits are – TEAM WORK – something Stormers lacked as they were playing for themselves to get a WC place in the Boks squad

  • 150.Dingman: Reply to this comment

all_stormers did you combine your and the missus’ names to get to Emma? Eg. Emmily en Manfred… ;)

  • 151.all_stormers: Reply to this comment

    Dingman — no !!!!

  • 152.Dingman: Reply to this comment

well cmm – the answer is yes and no…depending on whether you have foresight. The AB’s and England smashed the boks with 50+ not to long ago…was it worth it? It’s not that easy I’m afraid

  • 153.banana boy: Reply to this comment

Well Chaps, Im now finished work for the weekend….

Off to the local Beer festival which should be good… Over 160+ Ales, 60+ International Ales and countless types of Cider and Perrier….

Have fun, will be looking forward to the Pom’s getting the heads handed to them on a plate by the Baa Baa’s this Sunday!

Thanks for the commentary Andrew, next try link up a web-cam ;)

  • 154.Dingman: Reply to this comment

So i guess in hindsight we can say that this was a rather useless venture. But who knew that it would turn out like this?

  • 155.all_stormers: Reply to this comment

Banana Boy – Have one for us – Poms fielding a weak side as final on Sat leaves most of there no1 players out of squad (most play for Tigers) so they should loose

  • 156.Blou_Bok: Reply to this comment

    all_stormers and dingman …

Can`t you just go and chat over another site , your comments are dumb. You dont even care about the Rugby!!!

  • 157.cmm: Reply to this comment

If we were playing a test I’d be bouncing off the walls. My point is: aren’t we supposed to be looking at combinations and tightening our defensive lines. Maybe running some moves? Getting something constructive out of this, not just a chance to injure our players.

At the moment it’s just sevens rugby, by the looks of things.

  • 158.all_stormers: Reply to this comment

Blou_bok – tense coz your team did not make it to the final?

  • 159.Blou_Bok: Reply to this comment

Nope – looks like cause your team sucked this year you dont even care about the Boks … maybe because there`s too much Stormers in the squad??

  • 160.wpforever: Reply to this comment

    johan muller broken nose ????

  • 161.Dingman: Reply to this comment

OK Blou_Bok – please accept my deepest humblest apologies for causing your annoyance. I wasnt aware that a strict rugby-only-posts code was adhered to by the majority of members. I’ll crawls back to my little hole whence I came from master. Sorry again

  • 162.all_stormers: Reply to this comment

Blou_Bok – there I agree there should only be 1 maybe 2 tops in the squad. Think there should be a few more Sharks – Bulls right dominate the forwards but most of the Stormers plays don’t deserve to be there on their performace

  • 163.Blou_Bok: Reply to this comment

    Dingman –

Sarcasm , you just plain flou !!! :)

I am not here to argue so lets just chill – ok??

At least lets be proud of the Stormers for that victory over the Crusaders and draw with the Brumbies … if only they played like that every game?? :)

    Dingman –

Jake didnt want more injuries – I thought you were intelligent??? Then tell me what does “mathed” mean???

  • 174.Dingman: Reply to this comment

“mathed” my dear friend is an acronym for “match hitherto canceled” -

  • 175.all_stormers: Reply to this comment

Blou_ bok – we not arguing – as we the win over Sauders they knew there were not going to be caught and could take foot off the pedal – even rested Carter.

But yes they do have very tallented players and rate some very high but they just did not play as a team this year. On the other hand you team did make the top 4 and that is an achievement so to knock you for not getting into final was a bit rough

  • 176.Dingman: Reply to this comment

Andrew, the REAL test, will not be Scotland, but the 3N.
Surely, then it will tell JW how the BOKS look for 2007 RWC (the ultimate test).

  • 186.shieldstheband: Reply to this comment

Nope, the real test is the England games and the WC. I think our focus for once is right.

  • 187.Stoffel: Reply to this comment

What a dumb game, what are the okes supposed to get out of playing against these amateurs? The risk of injury is too great to be playing a joke game like this

  • 188.BokinOzzie: Reply to this comment

    Shimlas

    Who are they?

Is this the name for the South African womens rugby team?

  • 189.BrumbyIV: Reply to this comment

  • 190.ricane: Reply to this comment

Sounds like the Boks were amazing…I bet they’ve got that “winning feeling” back now, after the s14 beatings.
This sort of match up is such a good idea I think I’ll start coaching my sons kindergarten mates to provide a first up challenge for The All Blacks

  • 191.wls: Reply to this comment

Kiwi one i agree. The first proper tests of this season are the Tri nations games, well know how we stackup.
This game last night was surly just to see how the team runs there play against contact situations?

Scots will be a good mathc, i hope we win well there.

  • 192.ddrek: Reply to this comment

Hey we lost to France last time out and very narrowly won last years home series…..so never underestimate the Frogs…it will be a big test in CT. Scotland to put up a fight too. We are usually **** when we write a side off.
France to be our 1st real test before TN though.

Shimlas is the 1st XV of the University of the Free State, playing out of Bloemfontein. Many Shimlas came straight from Grey College, Bloemontein, arguably the best school team in SA.
