Boks run amok
26 May 2006
The Springboks scored 18 tries to one to smash Shimlas in a warm-up match at a chilly Vodacom Park on Friday evening.
The match was called off after just 60 minutes after Danie Rossouw crashed over to make the score 90-5 to the Boks. The Boks had led 50-5 at the break.
Shimlas maybe had parity for the first ten minutes of the match and again when JW Jonker scored the try of the game, but ultimately the pace of the match was too much for them.
No less than 15 different players crossed the tryline for the Boks, with Percy Montgomery getting hat-trick – despite only coming on after 33 minutes. Jaque Fourie got a brace with two good breaks, while 13 other players also notched tries.
Thankfully no major injuries were picked up although Ruan Pienaar and Wikus van Heerden had to have treatment on the field. Both men were able to return to duties. Lock Johann Muller also went off the field with what looked like a broken nose. He did not return, but will not rule him out of the World XV fixture.
The scoreline though will not have been the main focus for White. He will have been immensely pleased with the dominance of his forwards – as they should have – and the ability to hold onto the ball and show patience.
After a jittery opening few minutes, when the Boks dropped several balls, they soon found their rhythm and ran in a try just about every three minutes. The performance of the pack will be a huge confidence boost, while the backs also showed why they are rated the best in the land by the coach.
The final scoreline could have been much greater had the Boks opted to go for conversions, but they spurned those chances, which was another possible 36 points.
In the end it was just a chance for the Boks to stretch their legs as White rang the changes. Bigger fish await next weekend, but the true test will only come when the Boks play Scotland on June 10.
Scorers:
Springboks:
Tries: Gaffie du Toit, Wikus van Heerden, Johann Muller, Wynand Olivier, Andre Snyman, Albert van den Berg, AJ Venter, Percy Montgomery 3, Deon Carstens, Jean de Villiers, Jaque Fourie 2, Jannie du Plessis, Brent Russell, Juan Smith, Danie Rossouw.
Shimlas:
Tries: JW Jonker
Key moments:
60 mins: Danie Rossouw crashes over for try number 18. At this stage Jake White calls it and the referee blows the final whistle.
57 mins: Jaco van der Westhuyzen and Monty combine for a one-two, before Monty goes in for his hat-trick. It’s now kick-off, Boks gather, hold on for a few phases and then score.
55 mins: Andre Snyman breaks from inside his own half and feeds Juan Smith who gathers superbly to score another try.
52 mins: Russell dances and weaves his way through for the Boks 15th try. This is now proving nothing. Only injury can occur.
50 mins: Juan Smith is already over the line, but passes to Jannie du Plessis who scores. It’s getting ridiculously embarrassing…and they haven’t tried to kick one conversion.
49 mins: Pienaar is back on and seems fine. Still no Johann Muller.
47 mins: Completely one way traffic. Encouragingly the Boks are now showing good hands and some surprisingly fine innovation. Ruan Pienaar goes down injured.
44 mins: Each time they touch the ball the Boks are looking dangerous. Another fine movement sees Big ?Joe throw a no-look pass to Jaque Fourie and he scores in the corner.
43 mins: Scrum Boks on own 10m line. Sephaka is monstering his opposite number. Snyman superb break past four tackles. Brought down and it is recycled. Quick ball finds Monty on the left wing. Another try under the poles.
41 mins: Jaque Fourie intercepts from the kick-off to score under the poles.
HALF-TIME: BOKS 50 SHIMLAS 5
40 mins: Jean de Villiers makes the Shimlas look silly with a brilliant run on the right to score the Boks 10th try. All ten have been scored by different players. Maybe an indication of how the Boks are toying with their opponents.
39 mins: Deon Carstens breaks from a maul and sprints clear for another try after more forward dominance. The Bok tight five and loosies are just too classy for the Shimlas.
36 mins: Good work by Van den Berg, Venter and Joe van Niekerk frees Monty on the outside for try number 8.
33 mins: Jaco van der Westhuyzen, Ruan Pienaar, Jaque Fourie, Jannie du Plessis, Danie Rossouw, Jean de Villiers and Percy Montgomery on for Boks. Du Plessis penalised at first scrum.
31 mins: Jonker makes another scything break that leaves his more illustrious opponents flatfooted. Luckily the cover defence saves the day, and the Boks rumble forward. A well-worked driving maul ends with captain and No 8 AJ Venter falling over the line.
28 mins: Another Bok try, this time to Albert van den Berg after good continuity by the forwards again. there is nowhere near enough of a contest, especially up front.
25 mins: Shimlas win lineout and swing it wide. Inside centre JW Jonker outstrips the entire Bok defence for a superb individual try that showed both vision and extreme pace.
22 mins: Injury to Johann Muller. Looks like a broken nose. Shimlas into Boks’ half again. Lineout inside 22, Alber van den Berg steals the ball and Bosman clears over halfway.
20 mins: Russell is having a great time and Shimlas just can’t handle him. And while they are preoccupied with the Pocket Rocket, Snyman rounds off a fine move for try number 5.
17 mins: Shimlas have not been in Boks half since 4th minute. Van Heerden all over the place. The bump on the head obviously helped. The Boks are getting into their stride and Januarie, Bosman and Gaffie du Toit are looking good. Knocks have dried up. Olivier bursts through the middle for a try under the poles (and bonus point!).
14 mins: A massive drive sees the Shimlas splinter and Johann Muller is on hand to crash over for the Boks’ third try. It’s just too easy now. Bok pack is dominating now, after early struggles.
13 mins: Van Heerden’s head injury seems fine, but it’s hard to tell as he is wearing headgear. The Boks straight onto attack and into Shimlas 22.
11 mins: Boks straight onto attack and again hold ball well. After swinging left then right and left again, Andre Snyman ploughs ahead and sets up Wikus for a try.
8 mins: Try after the Boks hold onto the ball through several phases. Gaffie du Toit on the wing finishes off untouched after good ball retention by Boks. No conversion taken. Wikus back on.
7 mins: Shimlas making most of the play. The Boks are looking reluctant to take hard hits. Danie rossouw, on for Wikus, makes good yards. Russell and Wynand Olivier combine well down the right. Set up ruck. Roussow slams into Rory Duncan to the delight of the small crowd
5 mins: Penalty Shimlas for offside. They run it. Boks defence is swarming and aggressive, Shimlas are playing well. Another Bok knock.
4 mins: Already three knocks by the Boks, the last by Andre Snyman on halfway. Scrum Shimlas.
3 mins: Wikus van Heerden off for head injury.
1 min: Shimlas kick-off. Big Joe takes. Boks in white training jerseys and short socks. Not really too serious it seems. First stop for Bok knock-on.

Vinnie, Thorne never died, his first wife did, Macy. She then came back as a lemur.
26 May 2006, 17:39 pm
so it is vinnie, but i call him rich.
brooke is a honey though, a bit of a *****, but a honey.
i have also lost count on how many times his brother came back from the dead.
26 May 2006, 17:40 pm
Saw Olivier down at 13 with DB at 12. and they say this bok squad is short on pace! blistering pairing that – sa’s slowest 12 paired with a guy who’se fine at 12 but pretty pedestrian at 13. Also what does jake expect to learn? barry’s abilities and limitations are well known and olivier is a specialist 12 so playing him at 13 is hardly a fair chance for him to stake a bok claim. i’d rather see them experimenting with ronnie cook at 13 and olivier at 12 if that is what this trial is about.
