Krige takes on the World

Krige takes on the World

Corne Krige is eager to lock horns with the World XV when he captains a WP XV in his benefit match at Newlands on 9 June.

“They are a very good team, and I was surprised to hear they went down so heavily against England as the Baa-Baas,” Krige told keo.co.za. “They struggled against a well-structured side, but will get better with each passing game.”

A week after the star-studded World XV take on the Springboks, they play a Krige Benefit XV at Newlands. “Obviously, it will be an exhibition match,” said Krige, “and it will be good for the crowd to see the likes of Carlos Spencer, Joe Roff and Justin Marshall.”

The World XV will not be the only side boasting a lot of old heroes, as Krige has included a number of former WP stalwarts like Bob Skinstad and Hottie Louw in his side. This may be the last time local fans see them on a rugby pitch.

“It will be extremely competitive. I mean, we’re playing in the blue and white hoops, so there’s a lot to play for,” said Krige. “Everyone dreams of coming back to Newlands for one more game.”

After this fixture, Krige will hang up his boots and focus on his career with his company, Manela Media Advertising, which is based in Cape Town.

Maybe Corne will try and punch one of his own players lights out and get the score to 53-3?

Nick that test against England must have been the lowest point in SA rugby!

  • 11.nicksteroonie: Reply to this comment

suparugby, that was one of my lowest points as a rugby supporter.

We were camping in the Pilanesberg and drove for 45 mins to find a place to watch the game. Only to drive back to the camp site afterwards humiliated!

Sorry, didn’t understand your first posting (4) correctly. :-(

Keo should hand out a few klappe to Andrew who is in Bloemfontein supposed to report from there.

My apologies then Rudebud, it seems that other rugby sites always beat Keo to the story…

What’s with Jake ? The man seems to change his mind from day to day. First he told the papers that Wikus, although not the best player, will be captain if Smit is injured. Then he told everybody that AJ Venter is also pushing for captaincy. Now, out of the blue, he picks Jean Div as captain !

What then tells it us about Wikus ? Jake himself said that Wikus is not the best player, but a good captain. Now Wikus is playing, but without the captaincy. Did Wikus transform from a average player to a player of Springbok quality during the Springbok camp ?

Jake is starting to look like a fool.

    Nick

It was like when i watch the SA vs Aus cricket the other day. Halfway we went to a house for a braai after the Aus made 334 and we thought “damn, did we waste R175 watching the Aussies murder us”. When we went back though, we watch the match of our lifes with the Proteas making 338! Incredible!

  • 24.mossel: Reply to this comment

…and this one staays dry! doesn’t anybody care about Mr Krige’s XV?

Anayway- how will this team be selected? Will it be a current WP team with some stars of yesteryear or rather a fully invitational XV (with a few current players to fill the gaps)??

Rud, you should take journalistic reports with a pinch of salt. Also understand that many things happen between players and inside a camp that no one else knows about.

Don’t believe every newspaper report and every quote. Reality is normally quite different.

As a player…great super rugby player but lacked the class be an international star.

Corne is a thoroughly decent person. He is also a very good rugby player and leader. And I am sure if he could choose to have one day in his life over it will be the dark day in 2002 in London! But everybody knows he is not to blame (blame ****** Straeuli)!

  • 32.suparugby: Reply to this comment

    Blame Krige!

  • 33.nicksteroonie: Reply to this comment

    suparugby, it was 438!

  • 34.nicksteroonie: Reply to this comment

madasaScot, to me, Krige was just as much to blame as Straueli.

If you’re the captain, you need to act like it. He made a laughing stock of the Boks that day.

  • 35.nicksteroonie: Reply to this comment

madasaScot, now that I think about it, it is time to forgive and forget.

After I posted that comment I realised that this way of thinking, if exactly how people persecuted Hansie Cronje – who deserved more forgiveness than the way people treated him!

  • 36.madasaScot: Reply to this comment

    Nicksteroonie,

I stopped watching rugby for almost a year after that 53-3 game! The darkest day in Springbok rugby, it hurts just thinking of it.
What I actually tried to say was, dont judge Corne on that one day, same goes for Jannus L thinking of it, something suspicious happened that day, for good lads like CK and JL to act so out of their character!
    So I agree, lets forgive.

  • 37.londonshark: Reply to this comment

  • 38.nicksteroonie: Reply to this comment

Lets hope we can make a game of it when we play England twice at the end of the year!

Fôkkit tog Corne, wil jy nie maar net stil-stil weggaan nie. Jy het mos nou jou boek geskryf en jou naam gat gemaak. Moenie asseblief dit weer doen nie.

  • 40.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

Krige is by far the WORST Bok capain in over a century of test rugby. Look at his win/loss record, which includes a fifty-pointer hiding conceded to England (Twickenham) and NZ at “Sandcastle Loftus” !

  • 41.pompies: Reply to this comment

Post 40 why do you care? don’t you support Kiwi rugby?

  • 42.GoTheTahs: Reply to this comment

suparugby, you have been crapping on about that cricket score for so long you seem to have reduced each team by 100 runs..

on topic, will Krige get a yellow card in his own testimonial match? Would be kind of fitting..
