Visagie starts against Boks
31 May 2006
Former Springbok prop Cobus Visagie gets a gilt-edged chance to prove his credentials when the World XV clashes with the Boks on Saturday.
Visagie, the veteran of 29 Tests for South Africa, has stated that he dreams of returning to the green and gold and has been handed the No 3 jersey for the visitors. He will pack down against Deon Carstens and his performance will surely be closely monitored by Jake White and co.
Visagie’s last cap for the Boks came against Argentina in 2003 in Port Elizabeth. He failed to make Rudolf Straeuli’s World Cup squad that year. He left to play for Saracens in England and has not been part of White’s plans as yet.
The star-studded line-up includes former All Black halfback duo Justin Marshall – who will also captain the side – and the mercurial Carlos Spencer.
In total, five former All Blacks will start the match. Apart from Spencer and Marshall, wing Bruce Reihana, flank Xavier Rush and prop Dave Hewett are also in the run-on team.
Australia have just two representatives – Matt Burke at fullback and lock Radike Samo. Another former Wallaby, wing Joe Roff was dropped from the team that were thumped 46-19 by England at the weekend. His place went to Fijian and Auckland utility back Ica Nacewa.
Four Frenchman – centre Thomas Castaignede, No 8 Olivier Magne, flank Sebastian Chabal and hooker Raphael Ibanez – bring a strong European feel to the team which contains just two Englishmen. The relatively unknown Fraser Waters will partner Castaignede in midfield, while big things are expected of young lock Tom Palmer.
World XV v Springboks:
15 Matt Burke, 14 Bruce Reihana, 13 Thomas Castaignede, 12 Fraser Waters, 11 Ica Nacewa, 10 Carlos Spencer, 9 Justin Marshall (captain); 8 Olivier Magne, 7 Sebastian Chabal, 6 Xavier Rush, 5 Radike Samo, 4 Tom Palmer, 3 Cobus Visagie, 2 Raphael Ibanez, 1 Dave Hewett.
Replacements: 16 Mark Regan, 17 Christian Califano, 18 Julien Pierre, 19 Sam Harding, 20 Mark Robinson, 21 Ludovic Mercier, 22 Joe Roff.

Isn’t Fraser Waters a SA boy?

With dry conditions it shouldn’t be an afternoon for a lot of scrummaging – luckily.
The backs could be dangerous, bringing in Waters and Nacewa for Roff and Feau’nati will add more pace. I thought the Baabaas outside backs showed their age last week.
Check out Chabal – he seems to be out of favour with the French management for some reason, but he is an awesome ball carrier and tackler.

30 Reach For A Dream children will have their dreams come true when they walk onto the Newlands pitch together with their rugby heroes.
Corne Krige, a true WP icon, has been awarded a Testimonial Match at Newlands, where he played for both WP and the Stormers for many years. The match takes place on Friday 9th June, where a Vodacom WP Corne Krige XV will play against a World XV team. Corne will captain and play for the WP side, along with other exciting WP players such as Schalk Brits, Luke Watson and JD Moller. Former WP and Stormers team mates Bob Skinstad, Hottie Louw, Braam Van Straaten and Pietie Ferreira will also return to the Vodacom WP side for this historic match.
The World XV boasts international players such as Thomas Castaignede, Justin Marshall, Oliver Magne and Carlos Spencer.
The 30 boys and girls from Reach For A Dream will be the mascots for the match and will lead the players onto the field. The children will be primarily cancer patients from St. Joseph’s Home in Montana and Groote Schuur Hospital who are all keen rugby enthusiasts. A portion of money raised from the game will be donated to Reach For A Dream by Corne. In addition, as part of the week of festivities leading up to the game at Newlands, there will also be a dinner and golf day and a portion of the money raised from these events will also be donated to Reach For A Dream
“My relationship with Reach For A Dream has been a long standing one and as an extension of my association and rapport with the foundation, I am delighted to be able to extend this invite to them and help make the dreams of these 30 children come true,†said Corne Krige.
Two pupils from Paarl Boys High School, where Corne was a learner, will also benefit from the Testimonail Match through two bursaries that will be made available by Corne, enabling them to continue their education and further their rugby careers.

Stoffel,
No he is English. Plays for Wasps…
31 May 2006, 13:08 pm
Kudu, apparently it could not be confirmed whether one of those reach for a dream mascots will indeed be a little man from New Zeeland, affectionately known as Tackler, but it is widely acccepted that his sad life story warrants inclusion.
31 May 2006, 13:14 pm
Katman,
Tackler doesn’t deserve to be amongst those special kids.
31 May 2006, 13:16 pm
Kudu
Does the 30 children include the stormers squad?
31 May 2006, 13:18 pm
Stoffel you had it right, frazer waters was born in cape town.
31 May 2006, 13:20 pm
Fraser Waters? Son of Muddy perhaps? There might be a future for him at the Blues.
31 May 2006, 13:21 pm
Suparugby,
Yes, and 3 other “never-will-be’s” – JP Nel, Morné Steyn and Frikkie Welsch.
31 May 2006, 13:26 pm
This team spells bad news for the Boks.

Darem kan ons daai “never-will-be’s” in die ccup gebruik, aangesien al drie van hulle al n ccup GEWEN het! Dis meer as wat ons van die meeste huidige WP spelers kan se…
31 May 2006, 13:27 pm
Yes, Fraser Waters an SA boy (Capetonian). Attended Bishops primary a year or two ahead of Abbott. Move to UK when a young teenager. Capped 3 times for Poms.
31 May 2006, 13:27 pm
ok, Supa, jy het my !!
31 May 2006, 13:31 pm
This is a very good team. Very balanced and more experience and class than the Boks. Our only hope is that they don’t gel as a team on the day. Just look at the backrow for ball carrying ability! Wow.
31 May 2006, 13:31 pm
Looking forward to seeing the magician Carlos. as a veteran he still have more then enough class for poor Jaco.

Supa, ek wens ek kon jou glo. Ongelukkig is hulle net vir ‘n week hier en dan moet ek weer die ander, wat in my opinie nie waardig is om die WP trui te dra nie, probeer support.

StM’s been raving about the athletc giant Tom Palmer, so lets see. more StM bollocks or is he onto something?
31 May 2006, 13:43 pm
cab – he has been there or thereabouts – but can’t seem to step up. And StM’s claim he’ll walk into the Bok team – hardly. He got capped for Poms why back in ’0 I think – on a North American tour when the Poms where without their Lions – and since then he has only make the squad once, but not played again.
31 May 2006, 13:50 pm
cab – here you go, Palmer capped once as replacement 2001 USA (R)
31 May 2006, 14:10 pm
Come on…… Our loosies are gonna give these guys a carrot.
They’ll try send it wide most of the time.
31 May 2006, 14:41 pm
cheers gecko, yeah i thought it was more hype, speaking of talented poms, what u reckon of that young Tait? makes thing happen, a bit like Fleck in his youth.
31 May 2006, 15:05 pm
As a bench player for my team London Wasps, Waters is I am afraid rather limited.
But that Palmer chap has got the lot. I cannot understand why he is at least didnt make the Churchill Cup. Tom Palmer and Alex Brown at lock. What a combination
31 May 2006, 15:13 pm
StM, Mark Nicholl’s wrote that he can’t remember english cricket ever having a batting genius like Pietersen.
However, such is the prowess of SA sport, those in the know realise that Pietersen is not fit to tie Richards or Pollock’s boots.
I put it to you that this is much like our expat rugby talent, these players are heralded in England since you lot have been starved of sporting talent historically.
31 May 2006, 20:17 pm
First of all Cobus is going to scrum against Deon Carstens not Eddie Andrews. What do you buggers have against Eddie anyway? He will do well against Dave Hewet. The Springbok front row are most likely to get a hiding, but this will just prove my point. WE NEED COBUS VISAGIE!!!. He will teach Deon Carstens a thing or two about scrumaging. And I hope Jake White will be watching and taking note of Cobus.

Chabal is a monster, he’s pretty crazy and has no fear
Have your say
