Jake on transformation
1 Jun 2006
Bok coach Jake White admits he does not have complete control regarding transformation and the national side.
Saru last week announced their transformation charter, which seemed to give White the power to select the best possible Bok side without political interference. However, according to the coach this is not the case.
“I don’t have carte blanche when it comes to selecting sides,” he said on Boots & All. “All that happened is that I at last received backing from the people who employ me … not that they haven’t backed me in the past, but now I know that I enjoy their support.”
White said he remained committed to transformation and provided figures to support his claim.
“Since the start of the 2004 season we have selected 16 black and coloured boys,” he said. “We have created opportunties for black players, but now we need to select our best possible squad that will include black players.
“Look at guys like [Bryan] Habana and [Ashwin] Willemse … they are respected around the world. Unfortunately they are injured at the moment, which shows we really need to look after these [black] players.”

Me thinks Willemse’s career is finished. Habana I see as a potential talent. Lets wait and see. Like De Villiers fingers crossed. But if you look at the last great backline hopes; Joubert and the ‘pocket rocket’ the future bodes ill for them all.

But for real SA talent look no further than Matt Stevens. Stumbled upon x-factor last night and he had Simon Cowell positvely raving about him. Stevens comes across as a great bloke and a good singer to boot.
You know there are very few South Africans in the world that arent pretty decent fellows underneath all the tomfoolery.

Ok – time to pull a punch for the poor plebs (like me).
Anyone else here only have Mnet – and reliant on the CSN channel to get their daily fix of Boots and All?
Well – if anyone else is, then maybe we can both fling a cat around about why Mnet (in their wisdom), choose to instead show us a ‘thrilling’ match between ? and ? at the French open…
My blood is still boiling…

to call them black “boys” Jake (if quoted correctly) is a major insult in the african culture. U should be aware of these things Jake if there coach. To call them that on continental TV, not a bright move!

in jake i trust.
jake has done more transformation than any other s.a. coach.
AMANDLA to jake!!!

Tony,
He calls the whole team boys, not just the black players. He meant nothing derogatory by it. It’s because he is a teacher I think…

Jason,as mutch as it hurts to say this but in 10 to 15 years SA rugger will be no more.

jason; st mullet’s a wind up pom; he seeks reaction so he can justfy his pompous hooray henry rants; he previously lived in CT and remains bitter since Maraai turned away his advances in favour of Gatiep

StMick made a possitive comment about Saffers, me thinks. He’s stuck on a miserable wet island full of inbreds with big arses and bad teeth, so must feel pretty depressed at times. Still, he tried on this occasion.

Jason – If you keep being that dense, St Mic might change his mind about us….

andrew is right about the boys thing.
my mom was a teacher and constantly refered to the kids as boys and girls.
she was really shocked when she called a black kid boytjie (like she did to all the boys) and this kid turned around and told her he was not a boy he was a man at the age of 13

StM is just sour that his precious country is being taken over by expat saffa’s.
The must be over a million of the F@##ers there now!

All the boys on this blog are clamouring about how St M thinks about them.
Get a life!

Until there is selection on NOTHING other than merit, any quota player will always remain exactly that: a quota player. No matter how much merit they have or lack.
2 Jun 2006, 05:23 am
So there we have it. Jake thinks that Habana and Willemsa are the only non-quota black players in the squad.
Steady Eddie, Splinters Shimange, Solly, etc are all window dressing as we suspected.
2 Jun 2006, 08:01 am
Tackler,
Since when has there ever been merit selection on merit anywhere? Why does Jake not want to pick Jake Boer or Cobus Visagie – loyalty to his favourites, parochialism?

Stephen Nell in the Cape Times says that former Springbok wing Kobus Burger is disappointed that Bulls flyer Akona Ndungane will not line up for the Springboks against the Wold XV at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.
“My personal opinion is that Bryan Habana and Akona Ndungane should be the Springbok wings,” said Burger, who played in both South Africa’s Tests against a world side in 1989.
“I don’t like the tendency to play centres on the wing. These days fullbacks are also used there from time to time. I think wing is a specialist position. If the World XV are smart they will kick at the wings,” added the former Western Province star.
Habana, of course, is injured, but the national selectors had no reason to overlook Ndungane for the Bok training camp in Bloemfontein.
“Akona will be equal to the task (if called upon). He’s safe under the high ball, finishes when he gets opportunities and has a good all-round game. We have to transform and no other wing stands out above him, so let’s give him a chance. If you perform in the Super 14 you should be able to cut it at international level,” said Burger.
He added that Ndungane would even be a better option for the Boks than Breyton Paulse once coach Jake White settles on his strongest available side.
“Breyton is too small now for the way the game has evolved. Ndungane is an all-round wing.”
Burger would, however, consider playing Habana on the right wing and Ndungane on the left.
“Habana should switch because he cannot kick with his left foot, which is a prerequisite for a left wing.
“I’m talking about chipping and grubber kicks. Doc Craven always said that a kick is a pass with your foot. There should be a 90 percent chance of getting the ball back,” he said.
Comment: Habana as left-wing, unable to kick with his left foot, Paulse as right-wing, unable to kick with his right foot. Logic and common sense would call for them to be switched, but watch them trot onto the field in defiance of such logic!

Viper (#21)… Habana and Willemse are part of the race quota. Therefore even they are quota players.

Henri-F
Agreed regarding wings, although I can’t fault the World Xv choice of Snyman. Gafster I think could have been replaced.
2 Jun 2006, 09:27 am
Sarky,
At least Gaffie can cross-kick from the left wing!
Tackler,
Does Jake have a quota for South Africans, that makes him exclude “foreigners” like Cobus Visagie and Jake Boer?

TheTackler
With that logic Frik Du Preez, Naas Botha,Mannetjies Roux are also quota players , merit wasnt the only criterion during the apartheid era either ur logic not mine.

OxfordShark, post 12.
With an attitude like that dude, best you make plans to stay in the glorious UK for ever. Unless of course you are doing the “Double Hop”
You know, where you screw over the poms for a passport so that it will be easier for you to get into ‘Stralia mate…
Of course I am only guessing.
2 Jun 2006, 10:40 am
bloody hell, whatsup with StM?
All these compliments. I fear a cunning planning is afoot.
2 Jun 2006, 11:24 am
Cab, It appears my commentary on SA rugby is somehow frequently taken as barbed insults. This is just not true. Think of them as pearls of light in a sea of ‘me too’ opinions that are indeed the cause and not just the occassion of onfield SA rugby failure.
2 Jun 2006, 11:40 am
hmmm StM, we obviously need more time to digest those profound pearls of light.
But lets be sensible, it is time for you to support SA as your no.1 team. England have become a huge embaressment, not only have they reverted back to their losing ways, but worst of all they have become quarelsome and biligerent in defeat. Traditional values seem to be lost.
2 Jun 2006, 11:55 am
No no no. Consider my love of the boks as the footballing equivalent of supportng Preston NE. Giants from a bygone amatuer era. Everyone has a second team – for some its Fiji I have SA friends who all have a love of Wales heaven forbid; my fancy is the Boks.
The RWC07 draw has been extremely kind to the English. With a great chance of making the final (Wales 1/4s, France semis) and friend there its a flip of the coin.
Fancy that the 1st team to ever retain the title?
2 Jun 2006, 12:03 pm
I don’t know who Preston is, did they produce many english rugby internationals?
A second team that would be difficult. It would have to be NZ for their sheer brilliance in all aspects of the game. A massive rugby legacy, shared passions and decent blokes to boot, unfortunately it seems there flankers are becoming a bit flakey. Very distrubing that one of them was brought into line with a handbag.
As for the RWC, i think everyone in the know reckons SA will lift it. In fairness, we probably deserved it in ’99 as well as ’87 after beating the Cavaliers in 86. Strauli in 2003 does’nt count it was a very dark period that we would like to forget.
2 Jun 2006, 12:38 pm
Odds on SA winning are 6 to 1 – you should have some of that then – check out oddschecker
2 Jun 2006, 12:52 pm
Preston played in the FA Cup Final in 1964, I think.
2 Jun 2006, 13:06 pm
will do, hopefully we trip up against the world XV and lull the sharks into a false sense of security.
Have your say
