Bok coach Jake White admits he does not have complete control regarding transformation and the national side.
Saru last week announced their transformation charter, which seemed to give White the power to select the best possible Bok side without political interference. However, according to the coach this is not the case.
“I don’t have carte blanche when it comes to selecting sides,” he said on Boots & All. “All that happened is that I at last received backing from the people who employ me … not that they haven’t backed me in the past, but now I know that I enjoy their support.”
White said he remained committed to transformation and provided figures to support his claim.
“Since the start of the 2004 season we have selected 16 black and coloured boys,” he said. “We have created opportunties for black players, but now we need to select our best possible squad that will include black players.
“Look at guys like [Bryan] Habana and [Ashwin] Willemse … they are respected around the world. Unfortunately they are injured at the moment, which shows we really need to look after these [black] players.”
