Watson named WP captain

Watson named WP captain

Springbok-reject Luke Watson will captain Western Province in the Currie Cup this season.

The announcement comes as a bit of a surprise, considering Schalk Brits was given the Stormers captaincy during the Super 14 when De Wet Barry was dropped.

However, Watson is considered to be a natural-born leader, and has captained South Africa at an U19 level.

“I have every confidence in Luke,” said WP coach Kobus van der Merwe. “Performance wise, he has been in superb form this year. In addition we know he has outstanding leadership qualities and we believe in his ability to unite and lead the team.”

Watson said he was “honoured” to captain the team.

“It is a great honour and privilege to be selected to lead players in the blue and white hoops. A lot of hard work lies ahead but I know the squad is up for the challenge.”

I thought Schalk Brits was offered the option to Captain Province if he moved from the Lions?

    Anyone remember that?

Not that I have a problem with Luke.

    Good luck to him.

yeah good luck, lets just hope the good form sticks, a couple seasons like this last one and it would be almost impossible for any international coach to exclude him

This guy’s form has been superb whole season…it was only a matter of time before he was made captain!

Pity the Springbok management are so short sighted!!!

An inspirational decision, now Fester just needs to get the rest of the pack together

i agree, surely if he has a blinder of a currie cup jake will be hard-pressed to select him.I mean what more can a guy do!? (Jake’s answer: grow another 6 inches)

Andy Turner was adamant that the only reason that Brits left the lions was because he was offered the wp captaincy it looks like he may have been mistaken or perhaps Kobus changed his mind yet again the plonker.

One thing to be said – Watson is a controvertial character with a huge mouth. He is a love him / hate him type of guy.

Interesting to see whether all his team mates will follow him…

In my view, 80% of WP’s problem over the last year was that they had no leader.

I am not a huge Watson fan, but he has had an okay S14.

I have not seen him as captain, but this could be a masterstroke by Fester if the reports and his record is anything to go by.

I expect Brits to be his vice.

Good luck Luke, as a supporter of WP I wish you the best of luck and I sincerely hope you can bring back some pride and passion to the blue & white hoops. You certainly seem to play with a lot of passion.

WTF is going on at WP!? Who picked Brits as cappy in the S14, was it Mallett?

That said I’m pleased, one in the eye for the Springbok selectors!

A man walked into the produce section of his local supermarket, and asked to buy half a head of lettuce. The boy working in that department told him that they only sold whole heads of lettuce.

The man was insistent that the boy ask his manager about the matter.

Walking into the back room, the boy said to the manager, “Some old b****rd wants to buy half a head of lettuce.” As he finished his sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind him, so he quickly added, “and this gentleman kindly offered to buy the other half.”

The manager approved the deal, and the man went on his way.

Later the manager said to the boy, “I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet here. Where are you from son?”

” New Zealand, sir,” the boy replied.

“Well, why did you leave New Zealand?” the manager asked.

The boy said, “Sir, there’s nothing but whores and rugby players there.”

“Really,” replied the manager? “My wife is from New Zealand!”

“Really??” replied the boy. “Who’d she play for?”

Oh Good ******* Lord! Another Springbok reject takes the helms and drags WP further into the ****. Just like The Wet Barry. Watson should stick to farming watermelons and furrowing his unibrow. WP jou lekker ding! Make a black a capt, for faksakes already.

Does Fester actually have a plan??

De Kock, Barry, Burger, Brits all captained while Watson was playing.

What took him so long to recognise Watsons “outstanding leadership qualities and ability to unite and lead the team”.

Luke seems to be the new Tiaan Strauss. I think Luke Watson, Schalk Brits, Ross Skeate, Andries Becker, Joe Pietersen, Stefan Basson, Paul Delport and Gio Aplon should all go overseas to Australia or New Zealand. South Africa and Jake White don’t know the first thing about talent. They only use what’s been proven. The difference between intelligence and knowledge is that with intelligence, knowledge is used wisely whereas knowledge is used as is!
