Springbok coach Jake White admitted the team’s performance in the opening match of the season was well below par.
“To be fair of course I’m not happy. To say we played well would be fibbing,” White confessed at the post-match press conference. “We missed our experienced players.
“The biggest disappointment was we never got going. The guys did look a little dead in the legs. We also struggled up front and the experience we left out in the tight five definitely impacted,” said White, who maintained his 100% win record as Bok coach on home soil.
The coach admitted there were several areas to work on ahead of the first Test against Scotland in Durban next weekend. He was expecting to have Schalk Burger, Jan Smith, Os du Randt and John Smit back in the mix.
But lock Victor Matfield would probably not be considered. “Victor is not in the mix right now, but Albert van den Berg hurt his shoulder so we will have to see.”
The Boks fly to Durban on Sunday were they prepare to take on the Scots in the first Test of two-Test series. They have had one game to shake off their rustiness and another performance like this against a Scottish team with a good Six Nations campaign behind them could spell disaster.
“A win is a win and that is what it is all about I suppose. If we had played really well and lost I would have felt worse,” White added.

Jake, one question. why play a loose head at tighthead, and a tighthead at loosehead and then see the scrum nailed. Perhaps you need to admit you know nothing about a front row play, and let someone else pick your props. Cobus Visagie wás the best tighthead in the world when his drug scandal forced him out of the country after he was bankrupted succesfully de´fending himself with no support from any union. He is still the best south african tighthead around, and you talk of Os experience and how crucial it is to the team, yet you´ve got a northern hemisphere season internationally experienced rock of a tighthead whom CJ and BJ could learn so much from, and you write him off like some flash in the pan.
Time to get humble buddy.

forget about visagie. You’re clearly not thinking right. Visagie is a has-been. He wasn’t even that great today, it was rather Deon being so ****, but Visagie was ordinarily at best. Better start watching games and analysing for yourself than repeating what others say.
I suggest you wait for CJ or BJ to comeback, they’re the long-term asset, they are the ones who can take the boks to a whole new level.

Jake’s pride will get him in the end. Once he has decided the world is flat the you are buggered to think he will ever admit otherwise. Cobus murdered both looseheads but I can’t see Jake seeing it that way.
You can say it was there first match and they were missing players, but we were playing a pack that included one current international in Ibanez, and he has only just come back after time in the wilderness.
Lot of work to do to before the 3N and RWC.

well to summarise,
a boring game indeed. We really didn’t have any concepts on attack, and our defense need a little bit more focus. i’m sure we’ll sharpen our game. You could see that some players took the match lightly, adn some other are just not test level, like Carstens, Eddie also wasn’t good enough, but atleast he did what he usually does. Played good enough, and was surprisingly solid at times. I must applaud him, he was ok. Sephaka didn’t change much, but i’m sure he’d fair better than deon. Shimange, well i’m not going to go over this again. Luckily didn’t go below par, did contribute himself on a number of occasions.
2nd row terrible. Disgusted by Roussouw. And i always rated him highly as a secondrower. Albert did what he could do. Loosies hmmm i’m sure having schalk and juan back will change everything. And Wanneburg as an impact player is incredible. He and Joe should vie for the number 8 jersey.
Januarie – no comments. He better get himself match fit or else its going to be Ruan and Fourie, one two. Ruan need more time to settle. Overall the backline wasn’t sharp enough. I going to be watching everybody closely next match against the Scots. I’m absolutlely sure that most players will deliver next match. We’ll all see, it’s just to early to comment.
But Deon and Roussouw were way below par, and Wickus and AJ didnt have the best day today. Wickus maybe is too rusty. AJ should be in the mix to the nd of the season.

munkiboy, he has to play andrews and sephaka, so he has to make the best of a bad situation. Hence, our scrum will be kak for a long time.
Putting the quotas on the wing would make sense, but that is frowned upon now, the Minister of Sport wants to f@ck up the engine room now as well.

That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t give Cobus his chance. We play many internationals this year and he will need all of them. Of the SA props that played today, Cobus was the best. So why go public and say he has no chance to make it into the squad? In any case, he’s expressed interest to play for the Boks again, which doesn’t mean he considers himself and automatic choice. However, in Jake’s mind, the school kid has just backchatted the teacher instead of sitting quietly at the back of the class. This foot-in-mouth disease could well cost him his job.
He’ll be too proud to go back on what he’s said.

I was at the ground and watched Tappe focus on the other side of the scrum where Dave Hewett refused to bind and pulled Ediie Andrews down the entire second half.
It seems as though your head is as far up your arse as Deon’s was at the end of the game.
If you want to see the failure in today’s match look no further than:
- poor arrival at rucks by AJ, Roussouw, Carstens
- poor scrumming by Carstens
- shocking play by Januarie and Jaco

People, Jake did *not* say that Cobus would never make the squad – Andrew’s reporting was ****.
Jake did say that he has a number of tightheads in the squad that meet his requirements and the door was never shut.
See the relevant thread and the posts by those who actually listened to the program.
But then SA fans wouldn’t have something to ***** about…
Let White consider the performance and just say we hope against hope that he invites Visagie to join the squad before the World Cup.

Whats all the fuss about Visage. He got penalised,warned and did nothing else but TRY to scrum. only Garth Wright seemed to love him. So ok maybe i missed something but if you remember Visage used to get dinged by the refs as abok all the time fior scrumming in etc.
Give the inexperienced front row some slack ,they had beanpole behind them aswell.
Agree with Tomsta look at the game and the calls and make your own decisions not listening to the worst commentary crew available.
Even Marshall scoffed at the comment that the upside was Visage’s scrumming. it was in Wrights script he wrote the day before.
Tell me ,what else does Visage offer.
The Stormers duo of Joe and JdV were the better on the park ,we could have invested more play in our backs this game.
The World 15 had a very strong forward pack with experience to boot.That was no weak team.
I think it was a very good excercise for us a good win ,a loss even a draw could have done us some harm. Im sure glad we didnt klap them.
Monty’s early hit then Oscar act was so ridiculous it was like a slow-motion nightmare seeing Nacewa pull away from him.He was protesting his innocence so early he looked guilty.
Atleast he’s kicking well.

Jake was big enough to bring back Monty and Jaco in our hour of need, can’t believe he is going to write off Cobus. Afterall elsewhere in the leadup to RWC they are building reserve squads 2 and even 3 teams deep – Maories beat Warratahs 20-16 in the rain and Junior AB’s beat Fiji 35-17 in the island heat this w/end.

The bottom line is that the Boks have no depth, period. The only change in the backline may be Januarie and one of the wings when Habana is healthy. How scary is that. They showed little structure and creativity and picked up where they left off last year which was an inability to score tries. The pack was a shambles and Smit, du Rant, Burger, Botha and Matfield will make a difference but the reality is beyong the starting fifteen there is no depth which showed today. How can JW play that team for the next nine games. He can’t and that’s why the Kiwis will get the better of us. Tons of depth. What will happen when we lose a Botha, Matfield, Smith, Smit to injury? The skill shown today was no better than the Super 14 and I can’t see a sudden improvement in skill and tactics. As I said three weeks ago, this is going to be a long tough international season that will see us lose all our away games and some at home. While Scotland will be tougher than the World XV, the first real test will be France. By the way, the Boks looked exhausted after 50 minutes and they played older guys at the end of the season. Beware the men in black.

i think you got that straight, i also think that jake didn’t really say that Cobus would never make the squad. I believe you got that right because all i know is that Jake said that he doesn’t need anymore props. I mean having CJ, BJ, Eddie and Os is enough. and bringing Cobus just for the sake to have him (or because suddenly everybody saw him murder Deon) is nonsense. Well, after this match, the only thing we know that Deon is not test level and thats it. End of story.

he did that but you still have people moaning a bout something.
at least it showed that we have serious problems in certain areas. our all white backline was really poor. no blacks to blame for poor play in 2nd half.

Boring game, But not all wine is champange. The exposure was needed for some players. Big Joe had a good game. And Jean’s defense was very good. Pity we saw no backline movement to speak off. Wasn’t impress with Snyman’s workload at all and Jaco took some time to settle in the flyhalf position seeing that he hasn’t played there for some time. As usual, Sephaka was terrible.

We arent getting into the colour thing now are we? Is it necessary. i would rather see Odwa at 11 or 14 ahead of Sny and gaf…..altho Gaf’s kick was awesome and ultimately a match winner.
We hardly used our backline which was stronger than our fwds. The World teams fwds were there strong point and they surprised us a little playing that way…not old and dished up ,many a top player in that squad and the oldies ,some are legends so they can still deliver. Marshall would be AB 1st choice scrummie too if in NZ.
I wouldnt exactly call our backline **** ,Jaco hasnt been at flyhalf much this year and Ricky’s 1st delivery to him was lousy and he was pressurised ever since. Certainly not a great show but this backline with Habana and probably another wing is just fine.
Hey Wilfred I always wished Kennedy Tsimba would make the grade and had high hopes but bar his ineligibilty he seems to have faded away?

My, but the SA rugby public can be fickle, what is all this bring back Visagie ****? ******* has to play an entire season, Watson still does’nt get in (not that it bothers me) not to mention an entire cast of players that we’d like to see enter the Springbok fray. But Visagie plays one good game against an unexperienced Carstens and the big shout is to bring him back, Er, or, “he’s essential to world cup plans”
Catch a wake up dudes, this was a trial run for a number of players and combinations.
Who, in their right minds believes the team against Scotland would look or perform anything like this?
Januarie just has to kick of a bit of rust and that spot is his again. Pienaar has plenty of experience to gain before he can hope of pulling the no9 spot from FDP or Januarie.
Don’t forget, Dwyer was whining before the match that he wanted a full strengh Bok team to play against, well, they weren’t and they still won.
Bakkies, Matfield,Os, Smit, Habana, *******, FDP, all not there, to mention but a few.
Now Please, drop the “Visagie is essential to our world cup plans” ****.

Much as I hoped I would be wrong I did say that this would go the wire and if we managed to win it would be by a narrow margin,it seems I was right on that.Unfortunately I was horribly off the mark thinking there would be a feast of creative rugby,it seems famine would have been closer to the truth.That was the worst game of rugby I have seen since the Sharks vs Reds fiasco in Durban some seasons ago.It may have been early in the season etcetra etcetra,but a cobbled together World XV including players that had never played together before showed more creativity and cohesion than our National Reserve side.Pity those who forked out that ridiculous ammount to watch it,I am told the England vs Jamaica friendly was a far better watch.

Lets not forget that this was not really a test match. Several times they went for the line instead of the posts.
jaco played badly,but it started with januarie.
We did well in the lineouts, but there were too many forwards in the backline.
AJ was our best player of the day.

First game jitters and under estimating the opposition was half the problem, the rest can be leveled at Tappe. As for whether or not Jake White picked the best team to meet the World 15. I suggest he did.
He is obviously a bit late in the implementation stage compared to Henry of creating a deep pool of “experienced playersâ€, but the end result was a win, and that is what will be remembered, not the way it was won.
Two years ago NZ went to the UK and almost got its’ arsed splayed by a fired up Welsh team. Prior to the match NZ were tagged as unbeatable and were expected to demolish the ragtag Taff outfit of supposed no hoper’s. If I recall, Wales went on to do quite well that year. Okay, it was only the 6 Nations with a grand slam of some dubious value thrown in, but still, not bad in the scheme of things.
Henry for his part blooded several players on that NH tour and over the next 12 months has created a genuine monster.
Me thinks, based solely on the outrageous prediction of a 50 point win by Keo, that SA underestimated this World 15. You expectations of an easy win are therefore clouding your judgment of the value the match for Jake White in his development program leading into RWC07.
There is still time for Jake to replicate the formula Henry is working on. Heaps in fact.

Hate to say this, but i have a bad feeling for the boks next week against a very confident scotland team, the jocks are in no way the best team in the world but they are a ‘team’.
the boks need to raise the bar by 50% or else it could be very embarrasing.

Well well, I now see why Watson, Brits, Skeate were not called up for the boks they are much better. If the world 15 could have those three, the boks woud have got a hiding. Paul Roos high could have won more lineout ball.
Sitting in London watching this made me wonder. Rossouw was a disgrace, he tried to behave like a bar fighter, but the frenchman was not having it. The rugby was poor. The highlight was clear Cobus showed who was king, here in England he is seen as the strongest prop in the competion.Hilke

The team that played the world 15 did not contain the entire 1st choice selections of Jake White. Had it done so, I would have expected a more comprehensive win, and anything less would have deserved a negative reaction.
On the other side of the coin, had the very best team SA could muster played and beaten a scratch team like a World 15 by a tidy margin, I would also expect to see an unabashed crowing of how SA were already the next RWC champions by fans such as you..
Neither reactions would or are justified.
Sure, ***** about the match as a spectacle, but try to portray a little balance in what you really believe this result represents.

This game was always going to bring out the best or worst in SA supporters.No one can deny that this was basically a non-event.After all the media hype and expectations it simply failed to deliver anything approaching a glimmer of exciting rugby.Neither side had much structure and there was precious little continuity.
However it was a World XV that included some really good players and a Bok XV that had it all to play for.Unfortunately the whistle ruled the day and both teams were rather conservative.The two tries scored were both due to pathetic defensive lapses and the fact that our inability to score tries was once again evident,does not bode well at all.
Serious issue must be taken with Enrico Januarie who is not only out of shape and off form,but his on field antics this year have been embarassing.Of all those that have served Jake so well Januarie has fallen the furtherest.I was really impressed with him last year and expected bing things,he has however let himself and supporters down.

Waiting for the experienced players to help him out. I can just see the panic if 5 of these experienced players get injured before the World Cup.Last year we were laughing at the Ausies, yet we forget we are only 4-5 injuries away from the same fate. This team Jake has assembled can’t even win overseas, even at full strength against a weakened Aussie side! Ruan was the only highlight for me. He actually looked like he wanted to score more tries than the opposition.
And saying, this is our first game together is BS! A professional rugby player and especially a South African one, should be able to slot in, anywhere. New Zealand mix and match every week. You don’t here them saying its our first game together. That you leave to a high school u/19 c team.

we are not the most knowledgeable supporters in the world.
we wait for keo (the snake) to tell us what is right or wrong.
if we don’t do well we blame quotas.
we played poorly yesterday, but so what? it was a practice game. we called for JAKE to experiment, he did that and we still complaining. cobus visagie can only scrum , in general play he is non existent. in his last season for the stormers, he was often penalised for illegal scrumming.

I have a serious question with regard to the shouting and screaming at Tappe Henning. Having watched the game again I found maybe 2 or 3 of the penalties maybe on the 50:50 side or where a little bit more advantage could have been played. BUT please gentlemen how can Tappe be blamed for the other 30 friggin penalties????? He did transgress the laws the friggin players did!!!! Don’t shoot the messanger blame the 30 to 40 players on the park!!!!

Comment 22. Spot on. The World XV pack were strong enough. They also played the ref well.
Viasgie is a liability, got the same warnings when he played in UK. Think he should be bought as a CC player for Stormers! Tappe made him look good!
Albert, Monty,AJ, Pienaar, Jean played well enough but the run on nos 8,9 and 10 were shocking, squandering possession and position. The hookers and locks, excluding Albert, looked quite ordinary.
I’m not sure whether Jaco can play 10 at all because he always looked hesitant to me but he might have performed better if the pack did not have that slapper Rousouw at lock and Januarie stuffing it up. Our no 8 should have the nick name sideways.

Wilfred, I would rather have a prop who knows how to scrum than have one who can run around like a headless chicken and get his arse wooped at scrum time. The problem with you is that you most propebly only watch the backs. Cobus was at most of the rucks, he was tackling, he was suporting in the lineout and he provided the neede right shoulder.He did his job. The times he was penelised at the scrumms were almost never his foult. If you know anything about scrumms or if you watched what was hapening in the scrum you would have noticed that Deon didnt bind as he was suposed to, so when Cobus aplied presure Deon poped inwards becouse he wasnt bound. Cobus did his job and more. Now Deon, who is “mobile” and can run standoffs wasnt at most of the rucks, at scrum time his arse was wooped. These are the two reasons why props are on the field and he didnt fulfill his purpose on the pitch.

how am i an ‘utter defeatest’ ?
i am saying what i saw on saturday, and also what i have seen from the jocks in the six nations, remember, they beat france and england at home, not because they are agreat team, but because they have a belief in themselves.
regardless of who wore the green and gold on saturday, those players should have been good enough, fit enough and proud enough to beat the world xv at home.
i seem to remember the second string all blacks batter ireland at landsdowne rd last november, that is strength in depth that the boks can only ever dream about.
i am as passionate about the boks as anyone, but i am also a realist !!, not a defeatest as you might think, but what came out of saturdays game that worries me was the complete lack of imagination from players that we might have to rely on at some stage if we have an injury crisis. and i dont buy into the players are jaded and tired bullshit !!.

The boys relied on penalties on sat and not on each other…….luck isnt always there!!!! theyve gotto change there mind attitude.i agree with paddysid, its bullshit!
