Big Joe makes biggest statement
5 Jun 2006
Joe van Niekerk was the biggest winner from Saturday’s Springbok XV win against the World XV.
Van Niekerk, forced out of the end of year tour in 2005, made a belated start to the Vodacom Super 14. He played well, but lost ground in the final league match against the Bulls and sentiment about the No 8 Bok jumper seemed to favour the Bulls Jacques Cronje or Pedrie Wanneburg.
However, Van Niekerk may have done just enough to be given the run on responsibility in the first test against Scotland in a pack that will show a probable five changes to the one that struggled against the World XV.
Os du Randt, John Smit, Victor Matfield, Schalk Burger and Juan Smith are all expected to start, with White’s only decision being who gets the No 8 jersey.
Among the backs Breyton Paulse will replace Gaffie du Toit on the wing and Fourie du Preez’s more effective kicking game will mean a start ahead of Ricky Januarie.
It is Van Niekerk’s form, though, that would have given White some consolation from the debacle at Ellis Park.

Does Jaques Fourie dye his hair black?

Joking right, nothing is more boring than that game! I was in a “losie” and all the free booze and food couldn’t even make me excited about watching that ****!

Zinto,
Jongi? Jongi? That must be a hoax post. But the rightly inclusion of Pienaar and JP throws me off a bit.

Yoda, luckily I was at a bar, so I could drink to keep myself entertained.

how sad that we had a referee on saturday with an attitude problem
it was well known that henning is a useless ref and the refs society have to own upon what grounds they made this feeble selection
the fact is that if it was his last game but he should never have had a first
we are not the only nation that has suffered when he blew
i bet you the refs society will not utter a word

The 2 tests agains Scotland is the ideal situation to play Butch for 50 minutes in each game and Jaco for 30 minutes in each game. The winner should then fight it out with Pretoors agains France!!!
5 Jun 2006, 16:14 pm
I hear Tappet has been offered the role of Ouboet in the new Orknie Snorknie series

ricane
we’ll know soon enough. dont be so overconfident, just because the blacks beat some **** teams on the EOYT doesnt say you’ll be able to beat SA or Aus for that matter. It doesnt matter that you guys can can play with 4 different teams on tour. All that counts is the 15 on the field…
6 Jun 2006, 10:31 am
RugbyStudent,
I will replace Selborne with Kobus Wise and also bring in Os and Willie Meyer in the front row.
This is a purely 90′s onward all time team, sure there were better players before our/my time.
6 Jun 2006, 11:39 am
Rugbystudent….I generally enjoy uour team posts but PLEASEeplace Slappuke Rossouw with Habana. Even those that think Habana’s defence is poor…..well its brutal compared to Slappes.
Any side w Slappes in has made me almost bald. I couldnt take it anymore I nearly gave up watching rugger. then he went away ,THEN he came back and thank God nobody picked him.
Then he quietly embarressed slipped into retirement.
I know he could score tries at time but never was there a player more dangerous to the bok cause aswell.
Altho Percy’s slipped try to Nacewa gave me the madman hit my head against a wall feeling that Slaptjips always gave me.
If anyone ever mentions him in posts my skin prickles.
6 Jun 2006, 11:43 am
ricane, don’t be ridiculous, our 3rd stringers would whip that bunch.
6 Jun 2006, 12:38 pm
I would still play AJ ahead of Chemical Joe, with Spies on the bench.
6 Jun 2006, 12:41 pm
Rugbystudent,
Jy weet nie veel van rugby af as jy Ruben Kruger uitlaat nie…
Wat van Krynauw Otto, Os, Chester, Johan heunis, Uli,etc?
7 Jun 2006, 08:20 am
Stan
Those are my picks Stan, not yours, you can pick whoever you want. The combination of Teichman, Venter and Erasmus was the best combination of looseforwards in the world at the time! I never liked Kobus Wiese gameplay.
ddrek
I’ll pick Slappes, anyday. Habana hasn’t done much but finish. Even when slappes lost his pace, he was still creating things ou of nothing. No matter how much you guys don’t like him, simply because he played on the edge, you have to look at his track record and see the teams he formed part of and ask Nick Mallet, who he rates along with Rassie Erasmus.
7 Jun 2006, 08:21 am
Stan, I said the MODERN ERA? Why don’t you put in Carel du Plessis, Rob Louw, Naas Botha also on your list!
