Os beefs up Boks
7 Jun 2006
Os du Randt has been declared fit to face Scotland in the first test in Durban.
Springbok coach Jake White predictably made massive changes to the pack that struggled against the World XV and the unit named on Wednesday shows five changes. Du Randt and John Smit return, lock Victor Matfield is back and Schalk Burger and Juan Smith are the flankers.
Joe van Niekerk wins the No 8 jersey ahead of Pedrie Wannenburg and Jacques Cronje, with the latter not in the match 22.
Fourie du Preez returns at scrumhalf and Breyton Paulse is drafted in at the expense of Gaffie du Toit.
The team shows six changes to the side that lost to France in Paris.
Boks (to play Scotland): Montgomery, Snyman, Fourie, De Villiers, Paulse, Van der Westhuyzen, Du Preez, Van Niekerk, Smith, Burger, Matfield, Rossouw, Andrews, Smit and Du Randt. Subs: Shimange, Sephaka, Muller, Wannenburg, Januarie, Olivier and Du Toit.

Our subs looked better last week, but that makes sense.
Smith,Burger,Big Joe…..oh YES !!!!!!!
Usually i’d have Venter over Big Joe or even Wannenberg ,but Joe looked exciting and committed last week…certaibnl;y more exciting player. Hope the 3 fire….could be somewhat rusty.
I just dig Juan’s handoffs…..brutal.
Its apparent to me that Jake epected the World 15 to run a lot hence the squad he picked also hence trying to play the 10 man game ,with runners coming on as subs rather.
I just think the game plan was reversed last week and the Worlds had our number. Hopefully we can mix it up better this w/e.
Scots will be bloody difficult !!!

Come on mikeybrass(398),
Those token front row ‘Boks’ wouldn’t make the Greenside’s Pirate bench 20 years ago, it’s pretty simple if you look at those who weren’t even considered: Vissagie, Rautenbach, Dan Human, Pat Barnard, Bands etc.
And you are correct about Honeyball and Stransky, also note that both had played at centre and fullback positions at the CC level, I remember Stransky in 1991 against Tvl at Ellis Park: from Fullback position scoring 2 tries running slaloms half the field and cutting Small and Hendriks with some telling side tackles

Stransky really was class. Could kick WELL with both feet, had tremendous speed, eye for the gap and periphial vision not to mention distribution skills. And could tackle well for a smallish guy.
Just a bit erratic at times but apart from that top class.
Honiball was a very different player but equally effective. Two true Natal legends. Those were the days!
8 Jun 2006, 08:19 am
The point, Onlooker, which you have missed completely is that both Honiball and Stransky were given game time in their respectively positions. Stransky virtually never played anywhere but flyhaf…only a couple of occassions early on in his provincial career. Honiball played the *vast* majority of his matches at flyhalf.
398 was Skim’s post. 399 was mine and said nothing about quotas. My quota post was 389 which you have been utterly incapable of answering except to spew your usual racist bullshit.

Delek, personally I think Stransky is more of a legend than Honiball. Honiball was great but my preference is Stransky – when he was on song, I could watch his side-step and ability to send his centre into a gap for ages…

Mikeybrass we are on the same page. Watched Stransky play from his first season with Natal in ’88 I think it was. He just got better each year and was very exciting to watch.
Then of course world cup ’95 and then three fantastic seasons with Leicester. He was the real deal.
