Bevin’s Bok ambition

Bevin’s Bok ambition

Cheetahs fullback Bevin Fortuin wants to force his way into the Springbok squad for the end-of-year tour.

Fortuin joined the Cheetahs from the Eagles before the start of last year’s Currie Cup Premier Division and was one of the players of the tournament.

He made the step-up to Super 14 rugby with ease and is now looking to build on that effort in the Currie Cup.

“I set a new standard for myself in the Super 14,” Fortuin told keo.co.za. “I had a few good games, but now I want to keep improving. Who knows, if I do really well in the Currie Cup I could be chosen for the Springbok tour at the end of the year.

“However, the team does come first, and I’ll be putting the Cheetahs before any personal aspirations. If the team does well then individuals will do well too.”

The Cheetahs go into the tournament with the unfamilar tag of ‘champions’ hanging around their necks. Has that increased the pressure on the Free Staters?

“There definitely is more pressure on us,” admitted Fortuin. “Rassie [Erasmus] called us together and told us that we have to do well this year to show that last year’s result wasn’t a fluke.

“We started training for the Currie Cup as soon as the Super 14 finished, and training has been intense. It’s only this week that we’ve tapered things off a bit.”

The Cheetahs kick off their campaign against Griquas in Bloemfontein on Saturday afternoon.

Bev is not soft, he has a little extra weight but that should be easy to lose, he has got talent and is a quick thinker, I rate him and fink he will go far.

Bevan Fortuin has had a good season and a half, didn’t look out of his league in the S14 while a lot of our so called ‘better’ fullbacks did so there is no reason why he cant make the Boks if he remains consistent and adds a bit more flair to his game.

JP Pietersen has the best attacking game out of the lot but is is still very raw in terms of his understanding of the game in terms of such things such as positioning, efficiency under the high ball, and kicking out of hand.He will make the Boks within the next 2years though.

Jantjes seems to have lost all the attacking flair he displayed when he first entered the scene. He is too safe choosing to just catch and kick for touch.Never takes on the line anymore. He is a pale shadow of his former attacking exuberant self.

Roets is a joke and it shows as his name has never been mentioned by the selectors for national honours.he is solid in defense and non existent in attack(up & under only). Will never trouble any defense.Remember his blunder in the final last yr?(led to Bosman’s winning try).No BMT=No Chance

SA is short of players with Fortuin’s abilities and ambitions. What we are not short of is provincialism, racism and bloggers who trash anyone who dares to have an opinion different to their sometimes narrowminded view. The guy did not say he was going to be a Bok tomorrow. You guys are worse than some journos – what he said was

“I set a new standard for myself in the Super 14,” Fortuin told keo.co.za. “I had a few good games, but now I want to keep improving. Who knows, if I do really well in the Currie Cup I could be chosen for the Springbok tour at the end of the year.

Great, he is intelligent, he is level headed enough to say IF he does really well etc so give the guy a break. As for being overweight that didn’t seem to be a problem in the S14 where he was one of the Cheetah stars. Go Bevan, we need another 15 like you, and I for one will be hoping you get to go along on the EOY tour – you and Pietersen both deserve it, certainly more so than some names being thrown around on this thread.

Must say Bevan has converted me to a fan with his play last season…and was instrumental in FS eventually (after 20 years) converting me to a fan of theirs as well.

If Bevan only had a little extra pace, he would have been perfect, but he is still right up there. Will have to move Percy to 10 then, as Bevan is not a good place kicker as far as I know, but the guy has guts…and that is what I like about him.

am a kiwi myself but agree bevan is a very good player and will/should be a bok one day. Werner grief is not a good plyer, his attacking game revolves round wee kick returns just turning the ball over.
