Ex-Bok captain Joost van der Westhuizen was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after suffering serious concussion and swelling on the brain.
The scrumhalf took a heavy knock against Australia in a Legends match in Durban and suffered from a stiff neck and a migraine.
Former Blue Bulls doctor Henry Kelbrick brought Van der Westhuizen back to Pretoria for a brain scan.
Kelbrick told the Pretoria News: “I referred him to a neurosurgeon. We did an MRI scan and found swelling on the frontal lobes of the brain.”
Asked if Van der Westhuizen was out of danger, Kelbrick said: “Not yet. But we are monitoring him.”
