Pumas chase first win

The Pumas came close to upsetting Western Province last week and will fancy their chances against Griquas on Friday night.

“We are playing some good rugby, but we are still not doing enough with the ball,” Pumas captain Riaan van der Merwe told keo.co.za. “Both in the Province game and in the warm-up match against the Lions, we had about 60 or 70% of the possession and still we could not score.”

The Pumas should have more opportunities when they take on a Griquas team that’s still smarting after the pummeling they took at the hands of the Cheetahs last week. The men in green leaked a total of eight tries in the 55-14 defeat.

“Griquas will be a very tough prospect in Kimberley,” warns Van der Merwe, “and they have a couple of players who played for the Cheetahs in the Super 14.”

Van der Merwe is confident that his charges have what it takes to best Griquas in all areas of the game.

“There is no specific gameplan for Griquas, but we have identified two or three of their key players and so will be targeting them. If we can disrupt their play, it will go a long way to winning the match.”
