Bulls welcome back Boks
28 Jun 2006
The Vodacom Blue Bulls have made six changes to the team for their Absa Currie Cup clash against the Lions this weekend.
The changes strengthen the Bulls tremendously and after escaping with a narrow two-point win over the Falcons they will be hoping this team can do a better job.
With the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the composition of the Springbok squad, Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer has dropped right wing Akona Ndungane. His place is taken by Trompie Nontshinga.
Four other changes and a positional switch were announced on Wednesday. Returning Springboks, Gary Botha and Pedrie Wannenburg will play hooker and No 8 respectively, while Marius Delport starts ahead of Sevens star Danwell Demas at left wing.
Baby Bok stars, Chiliboy Ralepelle and Pierre Spies have also not been included due to the doubt involved in whether they will be included in White’s Tri-Nations squad.
Ndungane has also been withdrawn due to his impending selection for the Springboks, but it could prove a double blow if he misses out on that too as the Bok selection committee have hardly made up their minds yet.
Scrumhalf Heini Adams retains his place after suffering a rib injury against the Valke and although in some discomfort is expected to be fine by Saturday.
Frikkie Welsh – mentioned by keo.co.za as a possible Bok selection – was nevertheless included as captain for the second game running, but switches centre positions with JP Nel.
The only other change sees Warren Brosnihan get his first start for the Bulls this year in the No 6 jersey instead of Derick Kuun.
Blue Bulls team v Lions:
15 Stefan Basson
14 Trompie Nontshinga
13 JP Nel
12 Frikkie Welsh (captain)
11 Marius Delport

If they managed a 2 point win over the Falcons, they should easily beat the Lions by 20!

28 Jun 2006, 12:41 pm
What the hell did Akona do to piss HM off ?
28 Jun 2006, 12:41 pm
Looks like Meyer knows something we dont, hence the exclusion of Akona, Spies and Chilli and the inclusion of Welsh
28 Jun 2006, 12:46 pm
Bulls should pull this one off….Lions no force again…
28 Jun 2006, 12:50 pm
Ig
Akona did not do anything…if he gets selected for the boks there is no point for him then to play this weekend…it makes sense…..but this bok thing is really getting out of hand with all the stories running around
28 Jun 2006, 12:51 pm
The Boks loss is the Bulls gain.
Very good team, can only get better.
Watch Spies and Delport.
If we had more of them the U/21 cup would have in SA.
28 Jun 2006, 12:53 pm
Steyn – agreed but he was dropped during the S14 for Frikkie Welsh after being the most consistent finisher and creating a couple of gem tries for the Bullies…….
28 Jun 2006, 12:54 pm
Ig
There i am with you still don’t know why he droped him and why him or his brother did not get a chance for the boks against the scots
28 Jun 2006, 12:57 pm
Yip was a bit confusing – i thought at least one of the twins would get a run – Synman showed he is not up to it, and we don’t have any other wings that have shown the same potential !
28 Jun 2006, 12:57 pm
So let me get this right – players with Bok contract (the 28 or so) can’t play Currie Cup?
Does this mean Gary Botha & Wannenburg was not contracted?
28 Jun 2006, 12:59 pm
gecko.
that is it they don’t have a contract.
with the twins jake says they don’t have the pace…..but last year Akona ran around jdv to score when jdv used his dreads to stop him…..so they do have more pace then a man he picked at wing

Akona wasn’t dropped in the S14, he was rested and was back after a game or two. That is what JW is advocating!!!!
28 Jun 2006, 13:19 pm
28 Jun 2006, 13:23 pm
A good team overall just have a problem at 12 as we need someone like EB or Wo who create space fro his outside and offloads. Let;s see if Welsh can do it.

28 Jun 2006, 13:29 pm

28 Jun 2006, 13:30 pm
Thanks Steyn
28 Jun 2006, 13:30 pm

Potgieter het my op loskakel beindruk by o/21. Kan Delport binnesenter speel?
28 Jun 2006, 13:37 pm
Dis reg so JD, mens moet staan by jou geloof.

28 Jun 2006, 13:43 pm
Ek is mal oor die bul-arrogansie, dis amper dieselfde arrogansie as 2 CC games terug…
Maak die bulle almal boksers.
Hey Grrr….
Lions to take the Currie Cup!

Ahh…
And Hottie Louw will be joining the Bulls soon, so that takes care of the fact that we are missing three international quality locks. In Hottie Louw and v Schouwenburg we will still have the best lock combo in the country.
Add Gary Botha, and our host of props and the Bulls tight five is looking more than strong enough for Currie Cup opponents.
As for our backrow – Pedrie was the best of the Bok loose forwards on the park on Saturday. I am SO glad that Jake did not select him, and that he will be back to bolster the Bulls in the Currie Cup.
Marius Delport was the best U/21 Bok back in the final, and will boost the Bulls even more.
I wonder where Adrian Strauss is though, because quite frankly, he is FAR better than Chilliboy.
I have been swayed by the hype around Rallapele up to now, but having finally seen him play for a full game, I am not impressed. He hardly ever finds his jumpers, and in the loose Strauss is far more active than Chilliboy as well.
And as for his captaincy, I am afraid he was woefully unable to inspire his more fancied Bokkies to a victory over the French. In fact, I hardly ever saw him even speak to his troops.
So “resting” him is a convenient way to play better guys like Gary Botha and Kobus v/d Walt.
Lastly, it is a pity that Jake has spotted the talent of Pierre Spies. He is wasted on the sinking ship that is the Bok team. Rather keep him at the Bulls, where he will at least form part of a winning culture…

28 Jun 2006, 20:17 pm
Plus we have the prettiest jerseys. Man, I love red and white. Blue is such a downer! I will also never been seen dead in a Wp jersey. All those horizontal lines will do nothing for my figure! Did nobody tell then vertical lines make you look slimmer?? The Sharks are Ok, I mean black and white will never be out of fashion but that big red sign on the front really spoils the whole look. No, a good red and white is definatly this years fashion must! Now go on, stop stalling! Get your new jersey and come over to our side. We don’t judge people on their choice of provinces. Some of my best mates are Ex- Bulls.
