Pedrie lashes Lions
1 Jul 2006
Springbok discard Pedrie Wannenburg inspired the Bulls to a 39-24 victory in their Absa Currie Cup match at Ellis Park on Saturday.
After an unconvincing 18-16 win against the Valke at Loftus last weekend, this was the perfect result for outgoing coach Heyneke Meyer.
The Lions were competitive in the first half, but the Bulls took charge in the second and claimed a bonus point by scoring five tries.
Wannenburg was the best player on the park and showed that his Bok days are far from over.
The Lions got off to a good start when left wing Louis Ludik regathered his own chip ahead to score his side’s first try.
Morne Steyn kicked a penalty to keep the Bulls in the game and when another Bok reject, Tim Dlulane, reached out to score with 10 minutes to go until half-time, the visitors grew in confidence.
Morne Steyn grabbed another try just before the break to put the Bulls 15-11 in front, although Mark Harris responded with a penalty to reduce the gap to just one point.
Left wing Marius Delport struck a crucial blow four minutes after the interval when he beat several Lions defenders to score the Bulls’ third try.
Harris again kept the Lions in touch with a penalty, but when Wannenburg went over for the bonus-point try the result was put beyond doubt.
A try from Jaco Engels made it 39-17 to the Bulls, although Harris went over on the stroke of full-time to add some respectability to the scoreline.
Lions - Tries: Louis Ludik, Mark Harris. Conversion: Mark Harris. Penalties: Harris (4).
Bulls - Tries: Tim Dlulane, Morne Steyn, Marius Delport, Pedrie Wannenburg, Jaco Engels. Conversions: Steyn (3), Jacques-Louis Potgieter. Penalties: Steyn (2).

5 tries to 2.
The score flatters the Lions.
They were comprehensively outscrummed and were awful in the lineouts.
Some good enterprizing running by their young backs though.
This team would still beat the WP.

Goed gedoen Bulle!

Tim is impressive – he really should become a Bok sometime if he keeps going.
Jaco Engels too – and speed to burn as well – a third flanker? And a good scrummager! I believe he was a flanker when he was younger. With Tim and Jaco, together with Wynand Olivier and the rest of the loosies, you have the makings of a team that has fetchers all over the park – and you can start swinging the ball a little?
I dont like that Basson guy – he does stupid stuff – like go for a high ball that is clearly someone elses, or late tackles (a la his sevens play). I would not like to see him there permanently. Bring back Roetsie.

Great day, the bunch of pasty faced island dwellers get their asses kicked. Then the French win just to make it even worse. NICE!!!

Another enthralling Derby game that followed the form book.Despite the Lions most passionate attempts the Bulls were always going to win this one. This match again proved that there are some highly exciting players in the country and we can play exciting rugby.
Wannenburg was impressive and if he can improve his option taking could be a real world-class performer.I though Wikus van Heerden was superb in the fetching role, but as has become the norm was left to fight a largely solo battle, with only Russel Winter offering real support at the breakdown.Louis Ludik was another impressive Lion and I am sure we will yet see much more from him.For the Bulls it was good to see a youngster like Marius Delport coming through as much has been said and expected from him.
This weekends games re-affirmed my belief that there is huge talent in this country and that as soon as administrators, coaches and management read from the same page in this country we will be able not only to compete in the Super 14,but dominate the competition.

Very true ricane, the two 50+ points thrashing the Cheetahs dished out in two weeks give a very good indication about the gap between S14 and the CC. The sooner SA realises that the better it will be…
