Pumas fall into big hole
1 Jul 2006
Griquas claimed their first Absa Currie Cup win of the season when they pummelled the Pumas 60-26 in Kimberley on Saturday.
The home side trailed 26-23 at the break, but ran riot in the the second half, scoring seven tries in total. However, the Pumas scored four tries – all in the first half – to at least take a bonus point from the game.
Piet Meyer and Pieter Benade scored two quick tries for the Pumas at the start of the game, before Griquas right wing Lafras Uys responded in the 27 minute. But Pumas prop Jacques Muller was driven over soon after to give his side an 18-point lead.
Flank Heinrich Stride scored Griquas’ second try to make it 26-15, before flank Gareth Krause broke through to score with two minutes left in the half.
A Barnard penalty levelled matters at 26-26 soon after the break, and a minute later Griquas hit the front for the first time in the match when Vuyani Dlomo scored their fourth try.
From then on it was one-way traffic as the home side took total control of the game.
