Sharks break WP hearts
1 Jul 2006
Sharks prop Danie Saayman scored a try after the full-time hooter to snatch a 28-25 Absa Currie Cup victory against Western Province at Newlands on Saturday.
With time up on the clock, the Sharks were awarded a penalty inside the red zone, from which Saayman was driven over. Referee Jonathan Kaplan referred the decision to the TMO, who gave the green light after seeing the replay.
The Sharks were facing defeat when they trailed 18-25 with 15 minutes to go, but Butch James began the comeback with a penalty.
The Natalians appeared to have scored again when a grubber from replacement centre Gcobani Bobo resulted in a five-pointer for AJ Venter. However, Kaplan reversed his decison to award the try after the touch judge raised a flag for an earlier off-the-ball charge from James on Gio Aplon.
To make things worse for the visitors, James was yellow carded and walked off to a chorus of boos, although he did return to play a part in the match-winning try.
Overall, it was a hot-and-cold performance from Dick Muir’s side.
They spent the majority of the opening quarter inside WP territory, but the Sharks backline failed to round off a number of try-scoring opportunties set up by the pack.
A penalty from James was small reward for several attacks on the Province tryline, but the visitors finally went over on the 20-minute mark when Dusty Noble finished off a move that began inside their half. A clever inside pass from Odwa Ndungane had put Grant Rees into space, who in turn found Noble on his outside.
WP hit back almost immediately when Corne Uys received posession on the blind side, chipped over the Sharks defenders and regathered to score in the left-hand corner.
A turnover then saw Chumani Booi break away down the right-hand touchline and offload to Aplon, who shrugged off the tackle of Scott Mathie to score near the posts. Naas Olivier again missed the conversion to leave the teams locked at 10-all.
The Sharks should have regained the lead just before the break when Noble found space on the left, but Adrian Jacobs took the tackle when he had Mathie in the clear on his outside. Not surprisingly, the ball was turned over and kicked into touch by Peter Grant.
It was WP who edged in front after half-time, when another turnover coupled with missed tackles from Jacobs and Rees saw Aplon score his second in the corner.
Grant, having taken over the kicking duties, missed the touchline conversion, but then kicked a penalty to give Province an eight-point lead.
Just when it looked like the game was slipping away from the Sharks, James put Noble into space and he sent Brett Hennessey away for their second try. James’s conversion attempt went wide, but he made ammends soon after with a penalty that levelled the scores at 18-all.
WP’s pack has copped their fair share of criticism over the years, but it was a well-executed driving maul that saw captain Luke Watson grab his side’s bonus-point try.
However, it was the Sharks who finished strongly and took the full five points from a match they probably should have lost.
WP - Tries: Corne Uys, Gio Aplon (2), Luke Watson. Conversion: Peter Grant. Penalty: Grant.
Sharks - Tries: Dusty Noble, Brett Hennessey, Danie Saayman. Conversions: Butch James (2). Penalties: James (3).

1 Jul 2006, 14:25 pm
sharks lover,
What is your question?
1 Jul 2006, 14:28 pm
and what do you mean even the French?
I rate Betsen and Remy Martin higher than any other flank combination in world.
1 Jul 2006, 14:28 pm
??? stan?? read it lol
i asked if you guys thought botes on present form would make an all black aussie or french team ??
1 Jul 2006, 14:29 pm
i understand that stan
trying to see how others rate botes
because i believe this guy is better then jake gives him credit for therefor he not in the bok side
1 Jul 2006, 14:29 pm
No he would not.
But he is a good loose forward.
1 Jul 2006, 14:32 pm
You are biased now.
Botes is a blindsider.
He competes with Pedrie, Juan, Wickus, Spies etc.
Is he better than them?
1 Jul 2006, 14:33 pm
None of our loosies on present form would make the AB, Aussie or French team.
1 Jul 2006, 14:33 pm
Remy Martin makes a good cognac.

1 Jul 2006, 14:39 pm
yes, not bad, but not great yet.
Fourie is the best we have.
It must be King Straueli that lured him down there.
The more Boertjies, the better.8 in the team and the captain.
1 Jul 2006, 14:41 pm
at least Matfield is in the Bok team.
Unlike AJ who has his own website on fashion and cosmetics….

sharks lover,
Is jy gesuip want jy lag jou gat af oor alles!
1 Jul 2006, 14:49 pm
It’s going to be interesting to see how WP approach this game with fester announcing that they will be playing “more attractive” rugby than the boks last week, but with his arse on the line we’ll have to see how adventurous he really is.
Sharks look more experienced up front and with Ruan Pienaar and Keegan Daniel on the bench should be easy favourites to take this one.
I hope that WP have managed to find some mongrel tight forwards, I haven’t heard of half that pack.
May the best team (WP) win!!
1 Jul 2006, 14:53 pm
Attractive my ***.
You get jugdged by the number of wins at the end of the day.
Not by the kind of rugby that your team plays.
1 Jul 2006, 14:57 pm
Ek sien een van WP se reserwes is Brok Harris.
Is dit n afkorting vir Broke….?

Acording to Keo and all else, the Sardines were suppose to win this WP side by 40pts. At the moment they are not doing to bad. On paper the Bulls are also about 20pts stronger than this WP team, but its not gonna be a pushover like everyone thinks.

1 Jul 2006, 16:56 pm
Two things, the Sharks were disappointing and WP were surprisingly competitive up front. As AJ said in the post match interview, WP neutralised their drives and disrupted their primary platform.
Bad luck WP if you keep up with the way you played today, you might still be in with a shout later in the season.
1 Jul 2006, 16:57 pm
Yeah, I agree cmm. but currie cup vs super 14 vs tri nations vs wcr. Some of the blokes are suited more towards certain tournaments and style of play. This might be why his name is in the mix as he fits into one of these events.

Hey slappes, yes **** those BB wankers.
Please let them lose today, I have had enuf of these okes crowing from the rooftops.
But on the udder hand . . . I was pleasantly surprised by WP today, that no.8 was very impressive.
WP should have closed that game out at the end, but well done to the sharks, their experience saw them through at the end there despite Butch James’ indescretions.
1 Jul 2006, 17:43 pm
Agree Slappes, they can sing Liefling in their paddock or kraal,BB wank wank wank

wpforever & slappes, note how they can call WP brokeback mountain etc. etc., but when they are called “Blue Bull Mutual Masturbation Society” members then they get a little defensive and start making threats, they can dish it out but they can’t take it.
1 Jul 2006, 19:15 pm
Like the Bulls have Liefling the men from Brokeback should adopt Achy Breaky heart, sung by Billy Aids Virus.
I mean, Billy Ray Cyrus.
Did Willy Watson play today?
Just asking….

ha ha!! Good one stan . . . “billy aids virus”
your phucking fingers must be bleeding after the bulls game . . !!

Our defence is the leakiest I have ever seen it, please bring Barrritt back, AD just doesnt have what it takes, hope Barritt has had a decent rest after the u21. James should be fined all of his match fee for nearly throwing this one away with his stupid temper. GO SHARKS
1 Jul 2006, 21:44 pm
I missed seeing the game. A few questions:
1)how did Watson play?
2) How did Botes play against him?
3) Is Botes an opensider or a blindsider?
4) If not Botes, who is the Schmucks opensider?
Anyone?
1 Jul 2006, 23:18 pm
Vive la France!
1 Jul 2006, 23:38 pm
Watson played another blinder and is way better than Botes. I think wp surprised a lot of people today by very nearly beating the sharks. Wp need to give all these promising youngsters like Aplon , Uys etc. some good game time this season.I think then Wp will be back in currie cup contention by 2007.Currently we have too much inexpierience.
I think we would have lost by more had Barry or Joubert been playing. Those 2 should sign for the Griffons. Gus Theron should allready be finalising his contract with them.
2 Jul 2006, 00:11 am
Yip Watson was immense today and unlucky to be on the losing side. In the end too many lineouts went wrong and it cost us because we weren’t able to guarantee possesion and play for territory in the last 10 mins and the fish came back well to snatch it.
Botes was playing on the blind today and Warren Britz open (I think) with AJ Venter at 8th man
2 Jul 2006, 01:20 am
nice sharkies!!! u rule!!
2 Jul 2006, 02:25 am

How long were you working on that post, it sounds like it must have taken you weeks to get that post together. I suppose you are also quite proud of it too!!
Now **** off and go listen to your Ge Korsten and Bles Bridges CD’s you moron!!
2 Jul 2006, 08:16 am
2 Thoughts on the match:
First, I thought Bismarck Du Plessis totally overshadowed the much praised Schalk Britz in all phases of the game. Bismarck just seems to be getting better and better with each game.
Secondly, Linston Manuels, the touch judge who told Kaplan that Butch had punched Aplon in the face and should be yellow carded, should never be allowed near a rugby field again. If you watch the incident on slow motion, like I did a number of times, you will see that Butch did nothing like punch him. How can the touch judge intervene and ensure that a match-winning try is disallowed unless he clearly saw what happened? In this case he obviously didn’t see because ultra slow replays reveal that no punch was thrown. If the touch judge does not see clearly he should stay out of it.
Anyway good win Sharks.
2 Jul 2006, 08:30 am
bokpiel your nick and post reveals your obsession;
please stay at the **** sites;
this is a rugby site
2 Jul 2006, 08:37 am
jonnow, agreed, when the going gets tough up front SB cannot be as fancy as he likes. I reckon Bismark is going to be right up there at the end of the season now that he’s the 1st choice no.2 for the sharks. Let’s see how he does against the BB’s and FS though.
I never watched the James incident again, so are u saying that there wasn’t even an attempted punch by James?
2 Jul 2006, 08:38 am
Bismarck is a machine, he regularly runs over and through all his opponents! I am looking forward to him running through Gary Botha. On watching the replays I have to say Butch was hard done by, unfortunately he still has the bad rep following hin these days, I hope that the refs apologise and that the yellow is taken off of Butch’s record. The one awesome fact about this game as that the Sharks for once played all the way through and finished when it counted. The Bulls dont have a chance. The Cheetahs are the guys to watch again this year as they are the ones playing with some serious heart and determination.
2 Jul 2006, 08:56 am
This was a fine game and well done Sharks holding it together to secure a late win. This was a game that had it all and went a long way to restoring the faith in the attacking abilities of SA rugby.
Butch James was hard done by and once again Linston Manuels is in the spotlight for another howler. It seems there is no remedial action that will turn this guy into a ref or linesman for that matter. It is sub-standard officials like Mr Manuels that damage the credibility of hard working officials.
Regards the players on the day Gio Aplon showed the skills that made him so successful for the 7′s side and is a genuine talent.Bismark du Plessis was far and way the most productive forward and just seemed to do everything right.
Luke Watson despite huge competition from Britz and Botes stood tall for WP and Schalk Brits had a good game around the park,he still needs to improve at lineout time though.
One of the less recognised cogs in this Sharks outfit is definitely Adi Jacobs. He has matured into a very good player who is not only skillfull on attack, but often pops up when the Sharks need him most on defence.Naas Olivier is going to be a major player in the Cape and is a good all-round flyhalf and Peter Grant could yet become a really good inside centre,it will be interesting to watch this as the season unfolds.
All told a good game with a bit of everything and a fine reminder that SA rugby is exciting!!

rasta-man, it’s good to see WP fielding a competitive team again, and well done to the sharks for pulling it off in the end. But as the adage goes, a strong WP side is good for SA rugby.
Everyone, including keo, had written WP off as no hopers, but now those youngsters have shown that they have the hunger to play well and succeed.
That’s something that seems lacking in the bok players who are in their highly paid comfort zone.
I really liked the look of that new WP no.8, but WP lost the game by fluffing all their lineouts in the last 10 minutes of the match.
Now that there are no boks in the CC we can see who the next generation of boks are going to be and things are looking promising.
2 Jul 2006, 09:19 am
Must agree it’s always good to see WP at strength and there is definitely some good talent in the cape at the moment.
2 Jul 2006, 09:33 am
I must admit, I expected more from the sharks, but losing Kees Lensing before the game must have been a blow.
The sharks have the depth to go all the way this year though because they never stepped back in the scrums.
Their experience is going to be a huge advantage this year, although FS are probably the most experienced team in the CC this year.
2 Jul 2006, 09:50 am
I felt the Sharks let themselves down at times with some poor options and should have done more with the quality of possession they had for large parts of the game.Hats off to WP for taking their opportunities and some resolute defence at crucial times.
2 Jul 2006, 09:59 am
Really disappointing news for the Sharks is the loss of Braam Immelman and Nico Breedt to French club rugby. Both are hugely talented and have played some fine rugby this year.Good luck to them as they seek to make an impact abroad. They will join other ex-Sharks like Trevor Halstead, Shaun Payne and Rudi Keil on foreign assignment.
2 Jul 2006, 10:11 am
Halstead looks in good form for his club and scored a great power try in the final, now there’s a foreign based player that’s worth bringing back home for the boks, with Cobus Visagie.
Some of the bok selections don’t make sense and what’s even more puzzling is that Ian Mac is a selector.
2 Jul 2006, 10:13 am
Jy kan sien Luke Watson is nie gewoond om drieë te druk nie…het julle gesien hoe hy te kere gegaan het toe hy wel een kry.
2 Jul 2006, 10:19 am
Province made me smile. They played good runnuning rugby, if they had a better team they would have wasted the Sharks. Unlucky, that’s what I call it. The Sharks didn’t seem to get going. Why don’t they play Pienaar?! I am a proud Province supporter! PROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINCE!!!!!!!!!!!
2 Jul 2006, 10:55 am
This was actually a pretty good game of rugby.
There were quite a few decent performances but Watson and James stuck out particularly for me.
Watson must be a Bok now……this bloke lives and breathes rugby.
Butch has some pretty good touches but that shoulder still gets him in trouble.
2 Jul 2006, 12:54 pm
St Pete,
Would you rate him above Pedrie judging on yesterdays games?
I would not.
2 Jul 2006, 12:55 pm
Bok,
How can a man smile if your team lost?
Are you that used to losing?
2 Jul 2006, 13:11 pm

2 Jul 2006, 14:38 pm
Never thought id be defending liston ever and while i agree that he isnt up to standard and shouldnt be reffing at this level i think your being a bit harsh while we didnt see punch from butch when he went out of shot the incident looked far from over so while just because we didnt see the punch on camera doesnt mean it didnt happen.
Thought there was alot of new talent on show in this game thought the likes of Aplon , Harris and Diack who is only 20 were very encouraging. Hope the performance of Attie Winter who is an experienced cc prop and was worked over by a club player on debut in harris will cause wp to send this oke back to kimberly.
On the sharks side Bismarck was definately the best forward on the park for the second week running he is starting to dominate games like he did for grey college and fs schools in his youth ,Kankowski, Hennessey and Noble also performed very well. Cant really agree about with the other guys on butchs performance was really hoping he performed because the boks need him i think but he struggled to get his backs away and oliver got his backs away alot better even though the sharks pack were dominant.

I eat the chicken.
2 Jul 2006, 19:38 pm
Bismark duplessis is ‘n monster!
2 Jul 2006, 19:38 pm
Koos Du plessis is ‘n legend.
Net soos paulse en slaptjips en fleckie.
2 Jul 2006, 19:58 pm
Skim. Why the multi thread poultry submission?
2 Jul 2006, 19:59 pm
It’s what I do.
2 Jul 2006, 20:02 pm
Redox
I have watched the incident a couple of times on ultra slow motion, frame by frame, and it is very obvious that Butch did not punch Aplon. If Manuels or any touch judge is going to intervene on such a crucial matter, ie sending a player off and disallowing a match winning try, he must be damned sure that he is right and has got his facts straight, and in this case Manuels was absolutely wrong on the call.
2 Jul 2006, 20:05 pm
Aplon would have kicked butch’s *** if he really punched him.
2 Jul 2006, 21:10 pm
Aplon kan nie om donner nie?
3 Jul 2006, 08:24 am
Well done to the Sharks! You had the composure to win a close one after being stunned by a young team of WP “nobody’s”. Thank you my PROVINCE for playing the great game of rugby that you did. To the Lions, bad luck on the day. You’ll get them next time.
3 Jul 2006, 08:53 am
Adi Jacobs is still the worst player in all of SA.
3 Jul 2006, 09:07 am
Adi and all those breaks and inside passes … if only he wasn’t a ******* … maybe sampionman would like him …
WP lost … Sharks won … that all that matters … maybe WP can contend for the CC next year … this year your’ll just making up the numbers
3 Jul 2006, 09:10 am
Aquarius27,
G’n wonder hy noem homself Sampioenman nie…Groot kop, maar fokkel brein…
3 Jul 2006, 09:36 am
Corne Uys is hot.
3 Jul 2006, 11:48 am
Is the post about J Fourie coming to the Sharks legit?
Would be great to finally get rid of adrian jacobs, can only imagine how good fourie and barrit would be together.
I agree with samioenman, jacobs is the worst and far worse than jorrie and gus.
Thought watson was dam good against the sharks…
3 Jul 2006, 12:51 pm
watson after saturday yet once again showed that he is the best loose forward in sa next to schalk and his captaincy was the best i have seen from any player in sa over 10 years
Have your say
