Double blow for Boks

Double blow for Boks

Bakkies Botha and Jean de Villiers were on Wednesday ruled out of the away leg of the Vodacom Tri Nations.

De Villiers has not recovered from the rib injury sustained against Scotland and is likely to miss the entire away leg, which comprises three tests against Australia (twice) and the All Blacks.

Botha has been troubled with a calf, ankle and achilles for some time. He has not played this international season because of injury and his absence will be felt against the physical All Blacks.

De Villiers, though, is a massive blow to the creativity of the back division.

Joe van Niekerk, Breyton Paulse, Danie Coetzee and Bryan Habana were all given fitness clearances to get on the plane to Australia on Thursday.

The Bok management had not confirmed the replacements for De Villiers and Botha but two additions to the squad would be named in the next 12 hours.

The Boks are already without Schalk Burger. To lose the likes of De Villiers and Botha could prove devastating.

OMFG PICK JOHAN ACKERMAN TO REPLACE BAKKIES PLEASE!

    Hmmmm,

Can Barritt play #12? Conrad Smith isn’t the quickest for NZ, but his distribution skills and tackling ability allow him to play #13. It depends on what sort of backline you want – one with creative distributors, or one with big okes happy to bash it up all day. SA don’t have a world class #10, so you need some creativity somewhere in your centres.

Jaco is not a natural fullback.

It was the doing of Straulie that he started playing there.

He has always played fly half, never world class though and just not all that good lately.

    Hmmmm,

Habana when on his game is capable of world class rugby. Granted he’s not a natural ball runner like a Sivivatu or Caucau, but when you give him an inch with a clear line to the line, there’s noone going to stop him. That is world class wing play because he can win a game on his own if given the opportunity.

    bluebard,
There must be a good reason why Barry has been picked by Mallett, Viljon, RS and now JW TIME and AGAIN, despite all his obvious technical lmitations
And I haven’t seen a more committed Bok defender since Mulder/Muellr/Fleck. You just can’t leave the back line defence in the hands of Jd.V, Percy or Paulse, its not on

  • 206.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

Conrad is much quicker than Barrit stoders, come on.

And Barrit has proved nothing in distribution in my opinion, not in the S14 (check the stats) and I watched every Baby Bok game and did not see anything special there either.

I like his defence though. No Japie Mulder or Pierter Muller and although he missed a few in the U21′s, if memory serves correctly he had a 95% hit rate in the S14 from like 60 tackles.

    stodder,
I doubt the ABs are that clever,,,

  • 208.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

Stodders, Habana cannot win a game on his own. When last have you seen him beat even just one person.

You can add Rathbone, Tiquiri, Sailor, Joe to that list he does not compare too.

All his try’s were straight sprints for the line. Given he is hellova fast but pace does not make you world class, and he’s not the fastest out there, I think there was 3/4 that was faster than him in the S14.

In any event, he is by no means even at S14 level an 11. If he plays it should be 14, but then again Pulse is a better finisher

De Wet Barry was a great 12 at his best, he ran great lines and has the most feared midfield defender at a stage.

But he is so poor at this moment you struggle to remember those days.

Jake’s conservative policy is now back-firing. Playing only with a core group has exposed the lack of depth. Not that we don’t have depth, but because the talent was never developed. And the TriNations is not a breeding ground, not for the faint-hearted!

    viper6,

Would that not be great. At least just for the away leg.

    Hmmmm,
You go to war with the strenght you’ve got at your disposal, please name a better midfield defender than Barry in SA rugby?

  • 214.wpforever: Reply to this comment

If all were injury free or selected i reckon a backline with :
    9-Ruaan Pienaar-Gifted talent,best pass
    10-Butch James-in your face attitude 11-Habana-speedster
    12-Jean de Villiers-Flair
    13-Jacque Fourie-Best we have
14-Brent Russell-small but pacy and fearless
    15-Percy Montgomery experienced
this would be a nice option:-)

  • 215.cab: Reply to this comment

    yes WPforeover, agree.

perhaps Willemse and Russel at 15 with butch doing the place-kicking?

  • 216.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

cj on current form, everybody that played in the S14. he had like a 71% tackle hit rate from 63 or something.

Even Doppies, Grant and Julies had better tackle hit rates.

I wont even let him guard the gate at this stage, never mind war.

  • 217.leeanthonyw: Reply to this comment

wpforever – best backline we could have. But with the problem at hand, Butch needs to be on that plane for the away leg. He will have to cover at 12, although i think Wynand will do alright. This is possibly a blessing in disguise, JDV and Bakkies will both be able to rest.

  • 218.wpforever: Reply to this comment

Cab,yes thanks for reminding me ..i forgot about Ashwin:-)

  • 219.cj: Reply to this comment

    Hmmmm,
    Let us agree to disagree!
If any statistics does exist about Julius then it must be a faked one, Julius doesn’t tackle, you could see it clearly when the French scored next to him last test at Newlands

  • 220.wpforever: Reply to this comment

Get Campese involved in our Bok setup, love him or hate him,he was pure class and see how he is doing wonders for the Sharks backline. He has the knowledge and skills to transform our backline

  • 221.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

And the French scored twice through Barry?!?!

  • 222.wpforever: Reply to this comment

Butch James may get a few yellow cards, but he has the “in your face” attitude thats needed to unsettle the Kiwi and Oz players. The Kiwis especially can be exploited with a robust and gutsy player disrupting their attacks.

I see a lot of talk about our backline and who to play scumhalf/flyhalf inside centre.
I am not sure butch james is the answer – I still think that JVDW is the best of an average bunch.
I am also not convinced that Ruan Pienaar is as good as what everyone says. One CC/or one Super 12 does not make a world class player.
Also Aus/NZ is a very difficult place to make your proper debut. There is nowhere to hide. Not to compare as there is a huge difference between the class of the two players, but look what happened to David van Hoesslin in NZ … would hate to see the same thing happen to Pienaar eventhough he is a far better player.
His time will come but I agree with JW – his time is not yet.

Interestingl enough, last year before the end of year tour to Northern Hemisphere we had a few beers with JQ and he said that he reckoned Conrad Jantjies could be the next bok nu 10. He picked him on the wing because he said very often the winger is the first reciever 2nd/3rd phase and he wanted to see how he went. Obviously he never took his opportunity.

I still think Wynard Olivier could make a good 10

Johan Muller was picked in place of Bakkies, but no replacement was named for JdV. Meyer Bosman will cover both flyhalf and center.

  • 228.ansie: Reply to this comment

Well at least that takes the pressure off. Who in his right mind believes we can win a game on this tour? So if we do OK in any of the games it’ll be a bonus. My real concern is for the games at home; I doubt we’ll win any of those either.

In the absence of anything else, it’s time for Gysie to tell his boy to concentrate on fly half.

Our backline will suffer without Jean. I am a bok 100% and always support my team full out. But sadly i predict us finishing last in this year’s Tri Nations.

Aussies had good games against England and seem to be very settled with their new coach. The All Blacks have enough depth to kill anyone in world rugby. In other words , Ons gan k@k

  • 231.wp_boytjie: Reply to this comment

Butch is not international quality. Good provincially , but not internationally. Name me one flyhalf who’s “in your face attitude” has done anything remarkable in world rugby. Larkham , Merhtens , Spencer , Wilkinson , Pretorius , Carter , Honiball. “in your face” attitude is done by forwads and some centres like a De Wet Barry of 2004.

Remember the Sharks had Tony Brown for the most the Super 14 tournament and their has been only been 2 Currie Cup Games. Butch has proved nothing!

Not good, We desperately need a playmaker like jean, Wynand hasnt done anything spectatcular at international level yet, neither at Super level either, so hopefully Wayn julies gets a go at inside centre, with J fourie also a lion.
Bakkies needs a rest, so this isnt too bad but no one can really replace him. Boome? Geo Cronje?, Danie could do the job

    My agterlyn sal so lyk:
    15 Percy
    14 Akona
    13 Jacque
    12 Wynand
    11 Habana
    10 Meyer
    9 Fourie

    Reserwes:
    Jaco
    Russell
January(net omdat daar niemand anders is)
