Westpac Stadium in Wellington could snatch the 2011 World Cup final away from Auckland’s Eden Park.
According to New Zealand Rugby News magazine, a group of Wellington architects believe the six-year old stadium could have its current 35,000 capacity increased to the 60,000 needed to host a final.
However, Eden Park is also being upgraded which could see the two stadiums bid against each other for the match.
Eden Park Trust Board CEO John Alexander has revealed little about the details regarding the stadium’s redevelopment, except to confirm to confirm 9 August as the date for lodgement of the resource consent application.
Alexander also played down the idea of Eden Park being a national stadium for 2011, saying that title had to be earned.
