Valke fly high

The Valke secured their first win of the Absa Currie Cup when they beat Griquas 23-8 at the Bosman Stadium in Brakpan on Saturday.

The Valke scored three tries to one, with all three coming in the second half after taking a narrow lead of 6-5 at the break. The third quarter remained scoreless, before a Herkie Kruger penalty gave the visitors the lead for the first time on the hour mark.

It sparked the home team into action and they scored three tries, the first two in a three minute burst after feeding off errors by Griquas.

First left winger Mpho Matsaung crossed after Griquas fullback Zane Kirchner failed to hold onto a high ball from Valke flyhalf Louis Strydom.

Tiger Mangwani, taking over from Kirchner, also made a mistake minutes later to let Riaan Viljoen in for a five-pointer and the game had well and truly swung the home side’s way.

Inside centre Hanno Coetzee rounded off the scoring spree and sealed the Valke’s first win after defeats to the Blue Bulls and Cheetahs in the opening two rounds.

Griquas have one win from three games after victory last weekend over the winless Pumas.

Scorers:

Falcons - Tries: Mpho Matsaung, Riaan Viljoen, Hanno Coetzee. Conversions: Viljoen 1. Penalties: Louis Strydom 2.

Griquas - Tries: Henrich Stride. Penalty: Herkie Kruger 1.
