Western Province, of the bigger unions, was the only casualty on day one of the Under-18 Craven Week.
Mpumalanga Pumas shocked the schoolboys from the Western Cape with 17 unanswered points in the early stages of the game. WP fought back strongly, and at one stage reduced the score to 20-19, but it was the Mpumalanga side who won the match with a late try.
In other matches, the Golden Lions thrashed South Western Districts by 51-5, scoring six tries in the second half and seven in all. Free State won an exciting encounter against Boland, in a game that boasted some good running rugby and Limpopo easily beat Zimbabwe.
