Ludik the Lions key

Wikus van Heerden is one of four changes to the Lions team for the crunch Absa Currie Cup match against Griquas in Kimberley on Saturday.

Van Heerden makes a welcome return to the starting line-up after a weeks rest and resumes the captaincy responsibilities. Ernst Joubert can be satisfied that his only game in charge, taking the team to its only win of the campaign so far.

Louis Ludik, the youngster who impressed last week in the No 15 jersey with a brace of tries will be key to the Lions strategy of attacking wide. “The amazing thing is Louis is not even halfway to where he can be. he came straight from the U19 team and despite not making SA Schools has adapted very quickly to this level.”

Other changes include Jaco van Schalkwyk for the injured Mark Harris at left wing, while Earl Rose comes back in at No 10 for his injured brother, Jody.

Van Heerden’s return sees Cobus Grobbelaar drop to the bench, while Cobus Grobler will partner Willem Stoltz in the second row, replacing Gerhard Mostert.

“Wikus has had his rest and he is raring to go. We want to continue our winning ways, but Griquas in Kimberley is never easy as the Sharks found out last week.”

On the bench, Andre Pretorius and Grant Esterhuizen are included after recovering from injuries.

Lions team to play Griquas:

15 Louis Ludik, 14 Wylie Human, 13 Jaco Pretorius, 12 Wayne Julies, 11 Jaco van Schalkwyk, 10 Earl Rose, 9 Jano Vermaak; 8 Ernst Joubert, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Wikus van Heerden (captain), 5 Willem Stoltz, 4 Cobus Grobler, 3 Bertus Smit, 2 Etthienne Reyneke, 1 Heinke van der Merwe.
Replacements: 16 Andre van Niekerk, 17 Gert Muller, 18 Cobus Grobbelaar, 19 Bernard Roland, 20 Rory Kockott, 21 Andre Pretorius, 22 Grant Esterhuizen.

En ‘n mens gebruik ‘n hoofletter na ‘n punt “…he can be. He came straight from…..”. Net oor dit copy en paste is, is dit nie te sê dis reg nie! ;-)

what happened to Doppies – dropped? At least they got rid of the pony-tail boy Esterhuizen.

Earl Rose sal sy spel moet reg kry. Hy is nog nie ‘n force nie maar hy kan een word. Redelik lig in die broek. Die voorspelers net goed speel kan sy spel ook baie verbeter.

All of Earl’s bandages weigh more than him.

  • 13.leeusekind: Reply to this comment

Quinny, the article says he moves to the bench, but he is not listed. Cobus Grobbelaar = Baywatch. Nog een van Andrew se F(*&ops.

stan is also on the bench combing their hair.

  • 16.Quinnyshark: Reply to this comment

thought Stan was combing Breytie’s afro over in NZ?

  • 17.ruffle: Reply to this comment

he came home jealous because breytie smiled at mortlock.

Jaco vSchalkwyk and Earl Rose starting and benching in the same game…..gosh do the Lions have a shortage in players…..

  • 19.Quinnyshark: Reply to this comment

Hmmmm, think it’s because no-one wants to play for them!

  • 20.Andrew: Reply to this comment

Okay, okay. So I put the wrong bench on. It is corrected. Keep your panties on…

    Quinnyshark 10,

    Both are injured…..

Esterhuizen looked the best of all in the midfield against the cheetahs who individually set up the only try for the Lions in that game…..

He was not on for long and got injured…..

He at least cut his hair very short……no more pissyboy alicebands….thank goodness……

  • 22.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

    AP is back…..woohoo…….

Hopefully he gets a decent run like from half time than the Lions actually have a chance….

  • 23.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

Too late Andrew…….use any excuse to take the panties off…….

  • 24.Quinnyshark: Reply to this comment

Yup. Limit Earl to a half. Rate his boet far more than Earl – pity he’s not playing instead!

  • 25.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

At least Earl can kick 10 meters (Jody only manages 6 meters at a time)……. Gosh, can you believe I am exited by that…….but if you have Rose brothers to reply on then you don’t have much of a choice…..

  • 26.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

Maybe then Earl can move to fullback and Ludik to 12………Hmmmm

  • 27.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

    Post 25 reply = reply……

  • 28.Quinnyshark: Reply to this comment

    maybe when?

    AP at flyhalf?

I would be very surprised if they put Ludik at 12 ipv Julies, but why not? Maybe if they have sufficient points on the board they may try experiment a bit!

    Lions to get smashed

  • 30.Swyser: Reply to this comment

    Anyone playing Superbru?

  • 31.Quinnyshark: Reply to this comment

No its too gut wrenching. The teams I back are the teams I don’t support. Too much of a “conflict of interests” when I watch.

Would’ve let Petoors play a club game first. But good to see him back.

Hope they fixed his groins properly now.

  • 33.Grrrr....I'm a Lion!: Reply to this comment

Now the Lions will win the CC.

  • 34.Quinnyshark: Reply to this comment

hope AP doesn’t have a few too many beers celebrating his return from injury….

  • 35.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

    Quinny….

Yes when AP comes in at 10…..

Anybody is better than Julies at 12……every game thus far our midfield has been an “open try line”…….barring the first game against the Sharks where the tries were scored in broken play by the forwards…..that was also the last game Doppies played…..

Ludik is definitely one to watch for the future… he’s a really sensible guy for his age. Watch him have a breakout year in 2007

  • 37.Duke Toaby: Reply to this comment

But Ludik will move to the Bulls before 2007, just like Habana before him. Seems that the Bulls have to extra teams to pick their players from, the Lions and the Pumas!

My million dollar question is, how was he left out of the u19 wc side and all the other backline twits selected ahead of him….Draghoender, Jackson, Juries, Vermuelen, Groepes, etc, etc…….and that nogal by Ellof….unless he didn’t have much say in the squad selection……

  • 39.walter: Reply to this comment

at least we are starting to make fewer changes..only 4 this week, that’s the least Loffie has made since taking over as coach!

  • 40.David: Reply to this comment

Ludik will never make the Bok side under Jake. Did he play for the SA u/19, did he play for the u/21? If he didn’t he must be useless.

  • 41.Bloem Leeu: Reply to this comment

    David

Ludik was at the Lions U/19. Remember some players develop a bit later than others, ill give Andre Joubert as exhample, he didnt even play rugby at school level.

I was quoting Jakes response to calls for Schalk Britz’s inclusion.
I totally agree with you. In fact I think that we can only judge a players all round ability (skills and psychological maturity) after a couple of years at senior level.

  • 43.Bloem Leeu: Reply to this comment

    I fully agree David

  • 44.Craig Goosen: Reply to this comment

Ludik has class written all over him.

Great to see Andre Pretorius back in action, the Boks are really lacking a dominant flyhalf, just hopehe can stay injury free.

Watch the Griqs kick some serious butt on Saturday!
