All Blacks prop Carl Hayman won’t play against the Springboks in Pretoria. And captain Richie McCaw is unlikely to play either.
Graham Henry would not confirm McCaw’s absence, but he hinted the All Blacks captain would be rested and only take part in the following test against the Boks in Rustenburg.
Hayman is definitely out because of a blow to the head. It is a huge relief for the Bok scrum, who took a pounding from Hayman in Wellington.
Henry, whose All Blacks have not won in South Africa in two years, conceded there would be several changes to the side that beat Australia. Then again, he said as much a week ago when he told the media that the team to play South Africa had already been picked.
“There will be changes,” said Henry. “We had a pencilled-in side so we have a fair idea where we’re going. There are a few sore bodies around. Richie is feeling fragile, as you might expect. It was a huge game physically and a very quick game – the quickest of the season – so it was very demanding.”
Aaron Mauger is expected to be named captain if McCaw does not play.
