Struggling for game time at Vodacom Western Province, Selborne Boome has now joined the UCT Rugby Club.
Boome featured in UCT’s 36-15 win over Tygerberg at Groote Schuur last Saturday, a convincing victory that saw five tries being scored by the Ikeys.
The former Springbok said that his decision to join the club was for the most part, a practical one.
“The club is close to where I live and is where a lot of my mates play,” he told keo.co.za. “Other than that, it’s a great club with a good sense of tradition.”
UCT has produced a number of provincial and Springbok players in the past century. Of the current WP squad, Ross Skeate, Paul Delport and Isma-eel Dollie have all played for the university side.
“For me it’s great to be getting an extended run on the pitch,” said Boome, who re-signed with Province earlier this season after enjoying spells with Northampton and French club Montferrand. He is yet to start for WP in 2006.
“We have a lot of depth at lock at the moment, and I realise that I’m going to have to play myself back into contention. I have no idea when I will be back in the WP match 22. That’s for the coach to decide.”
Gerrie Britz and young Francois van der Merwe continue to maintain their hold on the No 4 and 5 positions in the WP line-up, while Skeate and Andries Bekker are likely to be amongst the reserves in this week’s Absa Currie Cup game in Durban.
Meanwhile, Boome should play for UCT against Collegians in Lentegeur this Saturday.
“I look at it as a gradual thing, a means to building myself back up. I enjoyed playing for the Ikeys last week, and I look forward to taking a few more knocks this weekend.
“I’ve been happy with the way I’ve been getting around the park and staying involved. I’m always looking to improve my game.”
