The All Blacks are fuming after Victor Matfield escaped punishment for a high tackle on Dan Carter at Loftus.
Strangely, however, the New Zealanders thought little of Ali Williams’ punch on Johann Muller that should have resulted in a straight red card. The incident took place in front of Irish referee Alan Lewis, who simply warned both players.
Matfield, meanwhile, hit Carter high in the ninth minute but he wasn’t penalised or cited.
All Black assistant coach Steve Hansen wasn’t surprised at Williams’ escape, saying there was “nothing in it”, but wasn’t so sure about Matfield.
“Obviously I thought it was a high tackle but the person who’s asked to look at it said he had no case to answer,” Hansen said. “I don’t think we needed to ask him, I think the whole stadium could see it was worth looking at.
“It’s disappointing that people get hit in the head with swinging arms. Whether they’re intentional or not, it’s not for me to say. Clearly it’s not something we want in the game.”
