WP buoyant despite scrappy loss
28 Aug 2006
After losing at the Shark Tank on Friday night, Luke Watson admitted that there is little else his side could have done in the abysmal conditions.
The Sharks scored the only try of the match through scrumhalf Scott Mathie, who dived over with only seven minutes remaining in the game. The Sharks’ 16-6 victory sees the Vodacom Cheetahs, who beat the Valke by a convincing 78-8 in Bloemfontein on Saturday, move to the top of the Absa Currie Cup log.
“It wasn’t much of a contest on Friday night,” Watson told keo.co.za. “The weather played it’s part in ruining what was supposed to be a great game of running rugby.
“Having said that, we have to give the Sharks credit; we’re not making excuses for losing. They played a better tactical game, and were effective in kicking the ball into our half of the field.”
Both sides struggled to string together more than a few phases at a time due to a very slippery ball. Despite the home team excelling in the set-pieces, Watson believes that there wasn’t much that separated the two teams in this department.
“Apart from that one scrum of ours that got wheeled, I think the guys stood up very well in both the scrums and the lineouts. I don’t feel that they dominated us.”
Vodacom Western Province will have to be at their best in both of these areas when they host the men from Pretoria at Newlands this Friday. Watson confirmed that although it will be tough, there is no extra pressure on WP to win.
“The Bulls rely a lot on their scrums and it will be a good challenge for our boys,” he said. “We really need to win this match, but that is our attitude towards every game. The Cheetahs may now top the log and we may have lost one match, but it would be ridiculous to let that effect our game.
“I don’t think that much will change for the Bulls game. If we panicked after one loss, then I suppose that would say a lot about us as a team.”

Dawn
Like a wise woman she likes to let men know that they( the Men) are in control. She plays along knowing that the opposite is most times true.
Medicine Woman Dawn…there’s more to you than meets the Eye/blog/leather jacket.
28 Aug 2006, 17:25 pm
Dawn, this is how it goes (i think)
an ethnic black is a person whos has no european blood in his family. ie your black folk in south africa. these people are also known as indigenous.
a non-ethnic black person is someone who is coloured, but not ‘african’, he has both european blood, and african blood in his family. this individual would have been called ‘coloured’ in the past.
and a white person, is someone who has pale skin, and his feature are european.
that is roughly the groups into which south african racial issues are divided, and the terminology now being used.

I think the dif in the teams was Steyn….
He kicked well etc and although Aplon miss fielded a few, he made far less errors than his opposite in Pieterson so they cannot blame that on Aplon having a bad game…
I have never seen one player make as many mistakes in a single CC game as Pieterson did Friday……
The breakdown points were pretty even as both lost the ball at the weirdest of times…….
However the backlines were the dif…..Russell got past a few times from the deep…Steyn making 3 clean breaks…….kicking very well/etc….and although I am not a Waylon fan….he really stood out on Friday night (or shall I say stood up in the tackles), it seems wet weather rugby is his game……
Even though Odwa could pass to save his life and Pieterson could to nothing right barring one punt down the middle of the field….the rest of the Sharks backline truly outplayed WP’s……

yeah, wolverine is the ultimate super hero, although respect to superman for getting kate bosworth!

Wolfman
What about the asian black South African? Although I suppose in the rugby context it’s a non issue.
28 Aug 2006, 17:38 pm
wolfman did you watch the game…..
Pieterson kick badly…..every ball that was contested he fumbled (and one or two that weren’t contested)……he cost a try where he was given the ball with the closest player cross defending approx 5/6/7 meters away (I think about 10/15 meters from the try line, maybe even closer)…..with nobody in camera rage he op’s to kick and drops the ball on his knee and it goes out on the full…..he missed a few tackles…kicked a 5 meter kick out of his 22 when WP could still score and take the lead (no WP player in 15 meters of him with Sharks players lined up next to him)…..ran the wrong line 1 or 2…..did not pass a few times when he should have……2 (I think) very wayward passes…..could not step at all and was caught with the ball (however conditions could excuse that, but then again Russell and Steyn stepped quite ok)……
Ag there were so many things hey……
28 Aug 2006, 17:38 pm
Le Fou there is infinitely more to me.
28 Aug 2006, 17:39 pm
Wolfman … so how did it come about that they wouldn’t serve you in the Hungry Lion?
You not indigenous?
28 Aug 2006, 17:42 pm
Well david, unfortunately i do not make the rules for the definitions being used today.
if you are refering to someone such as hashim amla, or dollie, i would suggest that what ever suits the politicians is the truth.
asians in south africa are normally bracketed with your non-ethnic black people, seeing as their ancestery is not ‘purely’ african.
they are exceptable as ‘players of colour’, until there is a need for more ethnical black people. ie. the new bok manager has to be ethnically african, therefore he cannot be ‘coloured’ or asian. he must be xhosan, or zulu etc.
28 Aug 2006, 17:42 pm
Dawn
I know that.
28 Aug 2006, 17:43 pm
Dawn, i am ‘european’. ergo sum not indigenous!
hmmm, i did not watch the game listened to it on RSG. who was the man of the match? heard watson was nowhere…!
28 Aug 2006, 17:45 pm
But then they should still serve you in Hungry Lion!
I’m now upset.
Dan was man of the match but if it was up to me it would’ve been Mils. He had good game.
28 Aug 2006, 17:45 pm
Jinx you know nuttin.
28 Aug 2006, 17:49 pm
Wolfman
Did you know, Dawn would, that under Apartheid there were 14 different classified categories of “coloured”? The 14th one being “coloured other”. I think someone at SARU must still have a copy of the Act.
28 Aug 2006, 17:51 pm
Yeah, i was aware of that David! those apartheidist sure did like their classifications! i am inclinded to agree that SARU still has a copy! one evil bureaucracy replacing another!
28 Aug 2006, 17:51 pm
Right!
And now, there are 10 shades of ethnic black!
Dit maak my mal.
28 Aug 2006, 17:56 pm
wolfman….
Some on another thread even made the comment that Pieterson was so disappointing which is most probably the only reason he was pulled into the Boks side…..
Steyn was the man of the match…..he did nothing wrong (did not knock the ball or anything)…..made a few clean breaks side stepping his way through the WP defence….out sprinting the Maori wing of WP…but the Maori did excellently in diving merely to push Steyn who slid on the very wet grass and his only his hand was in touch…..
Luke also had a bad game…..gave away a few stupid penalties and conceded above the average turn-overs for the game….
He also missed a few clear tackles (the best was AJ palming him off with out even losing momentum in his run) and the Sharks scrummy also ran about 5/7 meters with Luke on his back……he was tackled back almost every time and very few times tackled the opposition back…
28 Aug 2006, 17:59 pm
so AJ was correct in the build up to ask ‘who is luke watson’?! perhaps that is why jake has now selected AJ!
**** Muir has an eye for talent. the sharks have plenty of very talented youngsters, they are looking good for the future.
28 Aug 2006, 18:01 pm
Mmmmm…he is Fijian not Maori. I know they all look the same.
28 Aug 2006, 18:01 pm
and they are all similarly talented!
28 Aug 2006, 18:04 pm
see plenty of maori walking around in perth, the dudes are absolutely huge. saw one guy in the gym the other day, he was benching 80 kgs. had a bit of a chat, and it turns out it is his first time in the gym! they are scary athletes!

Sharks have pissed on the wee pee battery twice this season . In the unlikely event of wee pee contesting Natal in the final , have there ever been a season in which Natal pissed on wee pee 3 times in a season !!!

Howzit

Howdy Lads
I have not read all the comments on this thread but would like to discuss one from a bulls supporter. He said something about WP having less bonus points than the bulls so how can they be called a expressive team.
If I may comment on that remark, it’s because WP have won more games than your team has, you idiot. At the beginning of this season I felt that WP would probably not make the semi’s, in fact I was settling for not finishing last. So to lead the table was a revelation and I think that most people would agree with me on that.
The bulls, for having so many good players and a winning culture have lost their fortress look and have been found wanting more this year than the last 3 years all together. This shows that they had a great run, emphasis on had.
So, what’s better for SA rugby? I would think a nice tight competition where players are pushed to excell against eachother. That is back in the CC and we all should be grateful. Bonus points are good, being at the top of the table is better.

Where is Kudu and Martin
Are you guys practicing your new nick’s already?

Dan Watson did not expect the spears to get the next s14 franchise, and to subsequently win their court case. But by then he had already achieved what he and luke had set out to do, which was to become the captain of wprovince. As life turns out, this now works in his favour becuase no, like an old condom, he can promote peter devilliers as the next coach to the boks and his son as the next springbok who will become captain. Dan will then become the controller behind the boks! Wake up you stupid dumb donkeys. why has dan never been promoted in the ecape rugby circles. he was only interested in protecting his own interests and his son’s.
Let the force be with you
