Province contemplate rotation

The Cape Town side are likely to name one of either Ross Skeate or Andries Bekker to start against the Vodacom Bulls.

Kobus van der Merwe told Superrugby’s Gavin Rich that the locks that performed so well for the Vodacom Stormers this season may even start together if he decides to rest both incumbents, Francois van der Merwe and Gerrie Britz.

“I think that now, with five matches to go, might be a good time to rotate a bit at lock,” said Van der Merwe. “Francois and Gerrie have done very well for us, but they have played every game. It might be a good idea to give them a chance to catch their breath, and at the same time Bekker and Skeate are equipped to make the most of their opportunity.

“It may be that we rest both locks to give Bekker and Skeate a chance to start, or we may start with one of them and have the other on the bench.”

Vodacom Western Province will be further boosted by the return of hooker Huia Edmonds and centre Corne Uys, who both missed the 16-6 loss in Durban through a lower back injury and concussion respectively. Both came through Monday’s training session unscathed.

“We are very chuffed to have both players ready to play again. Everyone is fit and ready to play again, which is a perfect situation for us to be in before a match against the Bulls,” said the WP coach.
