Pretorius top of the pops

Andre Pretorius kicked the Springboks to a shock win against the All Blacks. Here’s how we rated the Boks.

Fourie
6 - Added thrust from the back and unpredictability. His kicking game is not great. He is a short-term measure. Return him to outside centre.

Ndungane
5 - Limited opportunities. Was subbed for Breyton Paulse. Minimal impact in the match.

Olivier
6 - Enjoyed the extra space one man out, but should have posed more questions running onto good front foot ball.

De Villiers
6 - Distribution was good, but there were huge defensive holes in the channel between No 12 and 10. Aaron Mauger and Jerry Collins made huge inroads, but the finishing of the All Blacks was poor. The poor defensive alignment was a combination of De Villiers and Pretorius not combining effectively.

Habana
6 - Was gifted an intercept try. Upped his workrate this weekend, but gave away a couple of silly penalties.

Pretorius
7 - Tactically played an intelligent game, especially in the second half when the Boks played the field position game much better than the All Blacks. Fantastic pressure kick to win the game, but there was a weakness in his ability to organise the defence from flyhalf. He makes his one on one tackles, but there were too many holes in his channel.

Du Preez
6 -Solid game and gave the Boks early structure, which was important. Change was made at the right time.

Wannenburg
7 -Powerful game at No 8 and was far more dominant than his New Zealand opposite Rodney So’oialo, who had a shocker. Wannenburg made the all important metre on attack when driving it up and the more physical back row of the Boks proved effective in stopping the All Blacks’ drives around the fringes.

AJ Venter
7 -Big game from the strong man. He gave presence to the Bok loosies. He gave attitude to the pack, which has been lacking since Schalk Burger’s injury.

Spies
7 – Very good game. He was freed up because of the physical ability of AJ Venter and Wannenburg and allowed to contest at the breakdown. He was also used effectively as a runner.

Matfield
6 – Remains the defensive master of lineouts in world rugby. Outstanding in upsetting the All Blacks ability to create anything from the lineouts. Got more involved in general play and had a good attitude towards the physical confrontation.

Muller
5 -Solid and is a stop gap measure while Bakkies Botha and Danie Rossouw recover from injury.

Botha
7 – He is the best tighthead in South Africa and now the challenge will be to nurture his international development. Scrummed well and did some good things all-round.

Smit
7 - Under huge pressure in this match, but he was desperate for victory and it showed. He couldn’t have given more in effort.

Du Randt
7 – Bloodied, but never beaten, his courage and character were influential in the Boks maintaining the pressure on the All Black forwards throughout. When he was off having the wounds to his head and eye stitched up the Bok pack looked vulnerable. The moment he returned, so did the solidity.

Subs
Pienaar
6 - Finally, he gets to play a test at scrumhalf. Let’s hope he gets to stay there. He has all the attributes and he adds variety to the attack.

Paulse
6 -His experience was invaluable. Defensively he was very good.
