Wasps sting Saracens

London Wasps made a winning start to the new Premiership season when they beat Saracens 21-19 in front of 51,000 fans at Twickenham.

Wasps took an early lead through Ayoola Erinle’s try but Saracens hit back with a try from Ben Johnston.

Lock Tom Palmer grabbed a debut try for Wasps but three Glen Jackson penalties put Sarries 16-15 ahead at half-time. His fourth extended the lead but two Dave Walder penalties saw Wasps take the points.

Also at Twickenham, newly-promoted Harlequins were beaten by a last-gasp penalty from London Irish flyhalf Riki Flutey as the Exiles ran out 20-19 winners.

The Quins looked to have snatched victory when Wales prop Ceri Jones went over with just seven minutes to play following a line-out drive. Replays on the temporary big screen, however, showed that lock Simon Miall had dropped the ball and justice was served by Flutey in the last minute of the game.

In Kingsholm, Gloucester beat Bath 24-19. Despite suffering the late loss of Mike Tindall to a calf injury before kick-off, they scored tries through Jack Adams and Olly Morgan to win the game.
